The Yamaha Serow 250 - Why not for India?

Yamaha has launched the Serow 250 globally. Its high time Yamaha should consider launching the same in India.

Following are things which might make the same a cakewalk for the company.

1. It has the FZ25 engine.
2. Its a good product considering the dual sport market is growing in India.
3. Project cost shouldn't exceed 100 crore given that the engine is already developed (Being a motorcycle dynamics engineer and working in 2 wheeler R&D, this is approximate estimation based on experience)
4. This will quickly open up a new market for Yamaha in India.

Here is the link for the Serow 250

re: The Yamaha Serow 250 - Why not for India?

The Bajaj Enduro was ahead of its time, Hero Impulse lacked the power, people wanted it to have the Karizma 225cc engine.

Right now the BMW G310 GS is quite costly and if Yamaha can bring this in India with the FZ25 engine which has got enough low end torque at a price range of approximately Rs 1.80 L on road, this bike should sale! Off course the sale will be limited but Yamaha do have an open market with a ready product in this segment with no competition!

Riding in terrains like Ladakh, Spiti, Sikkim, Bhutan, Arunachal these bikes will be fun. Plus youngsters now a days do love adventure sports. Its the right time for Yamaha to launch this bike in India.

Launching a right product at the right time can create history!
Eg- Yamaha R15, Ford Ecosport.

Launching a wrong product at the wrong time = market flop
Eg- Hero xtreme 200R, Renault Captur.

re: The Yamaha Serow 250 - Why not for India?

We have these in the states as the XT250. There great dual sport bikes, but with Kawasaki flopping with the X300 in India not sure how other manufactures would deploy there dual sports.

Honda: CRF450X, CRF250L or the Rally.
Yamaha: XT250, WR450R
Kawasaki: KLX250
Suzuki: DRZ-400, DRZ650

If possible I would choose a CRF250 Rally for Ladakh over a big bruiser (Tiger,Vstrom).

I won't say X300 is a complete flop. There is less number of takers as the costing is very close to higher cc segment. And in India, the majority of people spending on a Proper bike look for larger cc than anything else.

Also, X300 being more of dual sports tourer, its marginally differentiated segment.

X300 is an example of how greed lets down good products as well. They could have reduced the price by atleast a respectable amount if those accessories were not standard and included in the ex-showroom price!

310GS is getting reasonable demand despite the high price, single cylinder and TVS India origins. That should be encouraging to some manufacturers.

Specially companies like Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha who don't maintain a seperate network for their premium machines, and hence can afford to take risks - they dont lose much (in comparison) even if it flops.
