Rumour: Yamaha to launch MT15 in 2019

According to ACI reports, Yamaha is planning to introduce the MT15 in the Indian market early next year. MT15 is the naked version of the R15 V3.0 and was revealed in Thailand earlier this month.

Quote:
We believe that Yamaha will add yet another motorcycle to the 150cc segment, and this time it will be the MT-15. The 2019 MT-15 will be the company’s most premium 150cc sport-naked bike since it will share the majority of its mechanical bits with the R15 V3.0.

The 2019 MT-15 will be powered by the same liquid-cooled motor as the new R15. Exact figures haven't been revealed yet, but in the R15 V3.0, the 155cc, single-cylinder, SOHC engine delivers 19.3hp and 15Nm of peak torque and also features Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). The use of VVA allows the powerplant to generate decent low- and mid-range performance without compromising on an exciting top-end delivery. This motor comes paired to a 6-speed gearbox and a slip and assist clutch.

When (and if!) launched, MT15 will be positioned above the FZ series and below the R15 V3.0 in the Indian market.

Thank you Crazy Driver. I'll be one of the first to get this bike. Eagerly awaiting. FZ25 will be redundant then. Don't understand the logic.

Was wondering about the same thing, but about the relevance of the FZ16 after (if) the MT15 comes out. But I guess the MT15 will have the same engine as the R15 so it will have an entirely different character?

Hope it does come out and eventually, the MT03!

PRICE.

The MT15 with the Liquid Cooled - R15 V3 engine, USD Forks, Delta Frame and of course the ABS should be around 1.3-1.4 Lakhs.

Also the MT15 would not have the FAKE attitude of the FZ (Fake Radiator Shroud, Unncessary 140 section rear tyre, Plastic side panels to mimic a perimeter frame, a plastic chain drive cover to mimic an alloy rear swing arm and an air cooled engine belting out a puny 13 horses).

To me this MT15 appears to have much more character than the MT03.. maybe because of the Deltabox frame.

Honda has Unicorn 150 / 160, X-Blade, Hornet and what not, all belting out less than 15 ps of power, however, here Yamaha is trying to get a liquid-cooled 150 cc bike with some serious power for the size of the engine.

If this makes it to India, we have to give it to Yamaha for bringing in their premium entry level bikes though they are smaller player in our market and hoping it becomes a hit like R15.

In case Yamaha reads this thread, please bring the MT 03, please. I promise to go ahead and get one for myself. Just price it sensibly and you will laugh all the way to the bank.

Re: Rumour: Yamaha to launch MT15 in India next year

The MT03 with its Twin Engine and a price tag of around 3 Lakhs will definitely not generate enough of numbers.

Also Nakeds around that price point and engine capacity (Z250, Inazuma) have been dismal business failures. Just that fact that we have full faired versions of those Nakeds (Ninja 250/300, Yamaha R3) is testimony that the Indian Customer wants a Plastic Full Fairing at that price point to justify spending that amount.

On the other hand Naked's have been above to breach that 1.5-2.0 lakhs figure (RE 500 Variants, Himalayan, Dominar 400).. therefore it doesn't sound that big a risk to introduce another "Premium Naked" at around Rs.1.5 Lakhs.

A Premium 150 cc Naked at around Rs 1.5 Lakhs might seem a bit risky, but definitely not as much of a business risk as another 2.5-3.0 Lakh Naked.

Yamaha MT15 India launch on 21 Jan

Quote:
The all-new Yamaha MT-15 is all set to be launched in India on 21st January, 2019. The company has started sending out media invitations for the launch of an all-new product in Bengaluru. Sources of Express Drives close to the development have confirmed that the company will launch the awaited MT-15 naked streetfighter on the said date. The all-new Yamaha MT-15 will be the company’s most premium 150cc naked motorcycle as it will share the majority of its components with the R15 V3.0. The Yamaha MT-15 will share its 155cc engine with the R15 V3.0. The exact power and torque figures have not been revealed at the moment but the motor is expected to churn out almost similar figures at 19 bhp and 15 Nm as the R15 V3.0. The engine will likely come mated to a six-speed transmission and a slip and assist clutch is also expected to be on offer.

The global spec new 2019 Yamaha MT-15 will get inverted forks up front but the India bound model will get conventional telescopic forks in order to keep the costs in check. The chassis along with disc brake set up and rear monoshock will also be the same that comes on the R15 V3.0. The new Yamaha MT-15 will also feature an ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) as standard as all new two-wheelers having an engine displacement of 125cc and above need to have the said safety equipment mandatorily starting April 2019.

Being a naked offering, Yamaha will position the MT-15 at a lower price than the fully faired R15 V3.0 that is currently on sale at Rs 1.27 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). However, as the bike shares the majority of elements with the R15 V3.0, we believe that the difference in pricing won’t be much. The new Yamaha MT-15 will challenge the likes of TVS Apache RTR 200 4V, Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 and Hero Xtreme 200R in the segment
If this is true and if it stays true to its looks, Yamaha will probably see 1.5x the volumes for the R15 platform. The Pulsar looks seriously dated, not everyone is sold on the RTR and we don't have a truly great looking naked besides the KTM in this capacity range. And the MT is no slouch in performance either so I do hope this news is true.

Agree. Sales of R15 v3 have risen quite a lot in recent months, MT15 would add more volumes for Yamaha.
