Lambretta coming back in Electric avatar

Scooters India Planning to Relaunch Lambretta in Electric Avatar
Quote:
State-owned Scooters India said Friday it plans to venture into the electric vehicles (EV) segment, including bringing back the once popular Lambretta scooter brand, but this time in an electric version.

The board of directors of the company at its meeting held on Friday 14 December took note of diversifying its product range in line with the upcoming EV market in the country, Scooters India Ltd (SIL) said in a regulatory filing.

It is in discussions with several companies, including BHEL and NTPC, for the venture.

In the electric two-wheeler segment, the company said it planned to bring in Lambretta EV.

Though there isn’t a final date that has been set for the launch, the company has communicated that the bikes will be coming to the Indian market shortly.

Re: Lambretta coming back in Electric avatar

Don't know how legit this press release is (received from a gmail address!), but here goes. A bit early for an Auto Expo 2020 announcement, isn't it?

Quote:
Lambretta EV world launch Delhi EXPO 2020

Closely following its main competitor Vespa, Lambretta International launches the new Lambretta Electric prototype on the 15th Auto Expo of 6-9 February 2020. The Italian-Swiss multinational additionally announces the development of a steel Super Lambretta specially designed for the Indian market.

India’s unique role

After the successful launch of the Lambretta V-Special, Lugano, Switzerland based Innocenti, the mother company of Lambretta International, has announced that the global launch of the Lambretta Electric will take place during the Auto Expo in 2020. Innocenti, currently active in 80 countries with a range of products including the iconic two-wheeler, has recognized the unique role India is playing in the global market and understood the demand of the Indian public for original Lambretta products. Innocenti is proud to invite its world customers to Delhi to have them experience the uniqueness and beauty of Indian culture. It further wants to emphasize the important role Italy, the United Kingdom and India have played in the history of Lambretta.

The Lambretta Electric is currently being developed in Milan, Italy, not far from the place where Lambretta was born in 1947. The company has not disclosed the specifications of the electric platform yet, as it wishes to share this during its launch. For the development it closely cooperates with a reputed global partner ascertaining the superior quality of the electric platform. In India the company has partnered up with Lohia Auto based in Noida and New Delhi headquartered Bird Group.

Super Lambretta

Being aware of the specific demands of the Indian customers, Lambretta has simultaneously started with the development of the Super Lambretta. This upcoming aspirational model will be bigger and more spacious in size than the existing Lambretta models. The Super Lambretta will claim premium and upscale position in the Indian market retaining the classis rich look-and-feel which Lambretta is known for. It will be specially developed for ambitious young people understanding the beauty of Italian design.

Lambretta plant

Meanwhile Innocenti has intensified its activities to realise an assembly plant in the Mumbai area. The plant will provide the Indian market with original Lambretta products and will operate as a production hub for surrounding countries and Africa, providing jobs for the local area. Currently, talks are in their finalizing stage.

Scooters India

In 2007 Innocenti has started invalidity proceedings against several trademark positions of Scooters India which all were decided in favour of the Italian-Swiss multinational. In 2010 the multinational has issued a multi-million dollar claim against Scooters India in relation to the unlawful licensing of the Lambretta trademark in the EU. Most recently, Scooters India has withdrawn its oppositions against the trademark registrations of Lambretta in India. Currently the lawyers of Innocenti are preparing additional steps against Scooters India and its suppliers against any unlawful use of the trademark Lambretta on Indian territory.

Funny thing is -

Yesterday it was Scooters India planning to release Lambretta in the Indian market saying they won the rights to the brand.

Today it is Innocenti releasing statement that Scooters India has withdrawn from the case, they hold the rights, and plan to release scooters soon.

Either ways - sounds like another court war and nothing more.

Re: Lambretta coming back in Electric avatar

From the various tid bits above, this sounds more like people marking their turf for the IP / brand for legal reasons than being released for marketing reasons.
