Re: Rumour: 2-strokes to be banned from 1st April, 2019

Nope, I'm not buying it.

You need a lot to ban vehicles already on the road in this country due to a variety of reasons (limited police bandwidth, demand & need for old vehicles, low purchasing power etc.). Delhi-NCR and their 10 - 15 year old car bans are an exception rather than the rule. Pretty much anywhere else, you can drive a Padmini with an "Italian" diesel engine, an Ambassador with a swapped 10000-rupee 1.8L Isuzu motor or a 25-year old Mahindra Jeep with a smoky diesel of unknown origins.

If I take twenty auto rides, maybe just one will be a four stroke. So long as the two stroke models are still available off the showroom, they will be purchased for their ease of maintenance. They should be nipped at the manufacturing stage. It has not been done all these years, though production of two stroke bikes and scooters were stopped long ago, either due to the manufacturer lobby, or the misplaced notion of "common man" auto driver/passenger.

Even if the manufacture is stopped today, the ones already on the road will run for another fifteen years. Compared to their numbers, how many two stroke two wheelers are on the road? Negligible.

...
I see your location is Chennai - maybe a majority of autorickashaws plying on the road in Chennai are still 2-stroke.

It is a vastly different case in other parts of the country - be in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai suburbs, NCR, etc. where 2-stroke autorikshaws are a rarer and rarer sight as the days go by.

Re: Rumour: 2-strokes to be banned from 1st April, 2019

So many posts on what is an unsubstantiated WhatsApp forward! Sigh, the perils of modern day technology. The clickbait err rushlane article mentions Team BHP as the source for the supposed RTO ban list. In the absence of any factual details, this thread should probably be closed lest it contribute to the fear mongering which is definitely not the intent of TBHPian ashwinprakas who started this thread.

Look at the date. It's clearly an April Fools joke. RTO cannot ban specific two Stroke vehicles. Banning 2T's will result in buses, auto rickshaws, trucks and even ships being banned. Some of them are backbone of transportation.

Probably one of the prospective buyer dejected by sky high rates for these classic legends would have floated the rumor.

You mean rates will go back to circa 1987?

^^

Food for thought!

I bought my first bike, a Suzuki AX 100, in Dec'86. The on road price of Rs 14.5k something, was about 15 times the monthly salary of my entry level post! Today the comparable surviving bikes will be certain Hero (Honda) commuter models which cost about Rs 55k I think. Interestingly, that will be about 2-3 months salary for the same entry level post!

Today a person in that level of pay can buy an entry level car for 15 months salary, instead of an entry level bike!

Re: Rumour: 2-strokes to be banned from 1st April, 2019

I won 75 grand in a National level Quiz, way back in 1991 - and paid 27K to buy a KB100 RTZ. In Hindsight should have picked a Yamaha RX 100 or Hero Honda, because I spent a lot of time restoring a defective bike. So sad if these old beauties are driven off our roads. If it's not smoking, Govt should issue NOC!

EMD is also now 4 stroke . C175 engine is available for rail use.

Re: Rumour: 2-strokes to be banned from 1st April, 2019

Though I laugh whenever I see the 2 stroke ban news but the TV 9 News has left me confused.

Can someone throw some light on the authenticity of the above news?

Or are they the first news channel to join the rumor mongering group, where the journos gather their knowledge from WhatsApp university and doesn't even care to validate the news?

Don't believe a word of that TV9 BS. It has to be one of the worst possible sources of "news" (read gossip and rumors) on the planet.

Going by the fact that this was publicized by RushLane, another forlorn rumour-mill, and that this is most likely no more than an April Fool's joke, I wouldn't worry about anyone having their 2-strokes seized anytime soon.
