Day 3 : We are coming home

With the weather seemingly at its worst before we reached Ooty, add to that an outdoor stay we expected the worst. The rain gods kept away throughout the event giving us some of the best times of our lives at the event. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to bond amongst themselves and we got to know more about ourselves, our machines and also our riding buddies.

The itinerary for the day was to leave Ooty by 10:00 AM, visit Isha Foundation, return to CBE for lunch and ride to Bangalore. To hell with this plan, there were 20+ riders as we all agreed to return to Bangalore via NH44 considering the chaotic Mysore road on weekends. As decided we left the location by 10:00 AM, filled up fuel and began the descent towards CBE. Due to the weekend rush, traffic was at its worst and surprisingly the sun was beating down on us too. You see where I am going with this ? 20 Bikes + Traffic + Sun = Soup

As expected the single group got filtered into multiple small groups, with no one willing to wait or communicate to each other due to the unbearable traffic and heat, all hopes were lost in reaching Isha Foundation and I suggested in having lunch at CBE and head back home. We stopped over at Haribhavanam, Peelamedu and ordered whatever moves, just as I was about to have my first bite I get a call from a co rider saying that he reached Isha and asking when we would reach there? (What ??!!!)

After having lunch, messages were passed on to missing riders to meet up at the Attibele Toll. It was 3 PM when we started from CBE, 6 PM a tea break at Salem - Omalur toll, skipped dinner and at 8:30 PM we reached Attibele Toll (6:30 hrs CBE - BLR, that was FAST !!!), waited for others and took some final pictures, I reached home by 10 PM in North Bangalore.

What I liked

My ride , no seriously the RR310 is a beaut.
Quality of the food served at the stay.
The location of the stay was on Fern Hill, which was way from the city.
All the small events planned by TVS team, it kept us all engaged.
Toy train sighting. Hehehe
Lovely weather up until Sunday.
The tent stay, it was waterproof and also warm during the nights.

This was the one of the worst rides the group had ever had, the roads were in treacherous conditions and the rains didn't make it easier for us to reach Goa. I for one was the most excited for the trip since Goa was a 90's kids dream destination, wow I just wish it was a dream still. After years and years of dreaming this how my trip panned out.

Day 1: BLR departure at 11 PM on Oct 17th Thursday from Tumkur NICE Junction with 10 others, all was well until we took the left from Chitradurga towards Shivamogga. I had taken this route a couple of times earlier in the year and was very well aware of the road condition but I did not expect it to be deteriorated even more to the constant rains N Karnataka was facing. It started drizzling around 2 AM and the roads were all foggy, we were facing it difficult to slow down for the potholes or avoid it.

Unexpectedly 3 - 4 bikes who were following each other could not avoid a crater like pothole and all the 4 bikes rim got bent, 2 were severely cracked and the rear tyre lost air pressure. Thankfully we were close to Shivamogga and called up the RSA, the bike was transported back to BLR SVC.

It took us 15+ hrs to reach Vagator as the rain did not relent, once we reached South Goa the roads were all flooded making riding very very difficult. The last 120kms took us 5hrs to cover, WHAT A WAY to make an entrance !!!

We completely missed day 1 of the event, I hit the sack around 5:30 PM and woke up only the next day at around 7 AM, such was the toll the ride had taken on me.

The total damage from riding to Goa: 11 fork seals, 5 rims, 1 stator coil, and 1 gear sensor. I fortunately did not find any issue on my bike until a week after returning from Goa when my left fork seal started to leak, I replaced both the fork seals as part of the 20k service which also included changing of spark plug and fuel filter apart from the norm like oil, oil filter and air filter.

The bike feels much much smoother than before after the 20k service, but the other issues like stator coil failures is a worrying sign for me.

I understand the pain behind going through crater like potholes! Damn, you could’ve taken Hubli road rather? NH was in a good condition when I drove last year.

That’s massive to hear 5 rims taking the hit! I can very well picture how bad that pothole was!

We were informed that the Chitradurga - Hubli - Dharwad stretch had a lot of diversions and also was doubtful about the condition Chorla Ghat, hence we had decided to ride via Shivamogga - Jog - Karwar - Vagator.

While returning we simply avoided all the advice and took the Chorla - Dharwad - Hubli - Bangalore stretch. Chorla ghat was very bad on the MH side, once into KA it was smooth as butter. Departed Vagator at 8:30 AM on Sunday and I was home at N Bangalore by 7:30 PM.

TVS at the end of October launched a "Limitless Assist - TVS Apache RR310 RSA" providing unlimited kilometer assistance. I for one believed that the warranty and also RSA was for 2 years or 30,000 kms whichever comes earlier from the date of purchase.



Some ownership groups also started receiving the following message via WhatsApp.

"Dear All Apache RR310 Customer,

Please note Customer who have purchased RR310 bike before 1st October 2019, need to purchase this RSA at an affordable price @999/- only inclusive of all taxes. The Customer can purchase the policy online directly also by typing the engine number. Please spread the word to all fellow apachians. RSA is now an add on Service. Customer who have purchased bike post 1st October 2019, 1st year is complimentary. 2nd year onwards Customer have to purchase the policy.

According to this message whoever purchased the vehicle before Oct 1st 2019 would have to renew the RSA by paying an annual charge of Rs.999/-. Those who have purchased the bike after Oct 1st 2019 will get 2 years warranty with 1 year RSA include, this is very confusing.

With the bikes breaking down ever so often, we would have loved an extended warranty support from TVS but instead they launch an online RSA renewal policy which is not very confident inspiring to the owners as well as for the brand.

This is what the website says, confused lines. My warranty ends by Feb 2020 and I am not sure if I should renew this now or wait till my warranty period gets over.

February 2020 - The 2nd year anniversary ride

Trip requirements: Curvy roads + 1000 km on odo.
Where: God's own country (Finally!!)
When: Feb 21st - 23rd

Two days to Kerala was strictly not possible, we decided to capitalize on the Mahashivrathri holiday on Friday and made it a 3-day trip, this is my 1st trip to Kerala with FURY and I did not want to hurry it.

Day 1: Bangalore - Vagamon
Distance: 550 Kms
Rides: 6 RR310's, 1 Dominar 400 and 1 Repsol Honda CBR250

Day 1 was straight forward, we started from E city toll at 4:30 AM, with a target to reach our stay in Vagamon before sunset. We took the quickest route to Vagamon which was Bangalore - Salem - Dindigul - Theni - Kumily - Vagamon. No stress route really, but the stretch between Theni & Kumily was so so with the route passing through multiple small villages.

We were at Kumily by 2:00 PM, decided to have lunch before we could tackle the Kerala roads, I have heard multiple versions of how KeSRTC buses are driven rashly on those tiny roads, and I experienced it 1st hand. But apart from those buses, I was seriously impressed with how all the others were maintaining lane discipline. No one used to overtake in the corners, if someone did those were not KL registered vehicles and typically were KA registered private cars. (Grrrrr!!!)

I use an app called REVER, just to keep the ride interesting and to track my ride and idle time. It tracks all the details like elevation change, avg speed, top speed and ride time (The app auto pauses when you stop).

We reached our stay Lavender Vagamon at around 4:30 - 5:00 PM, so it took us close to 12hrs including breaks. The homestay was located amidst a tea plantation and had nice views, offered good food, super clean rooms and most importantly private parking for our bikes.

The home stay had an in-house kitchen and served both veg/non veg food. We ordered some food, had a small walk inside the plantation and called it a day.

Day 2: Uluppuni Sunrise Point - Idukki Dam - Ayyapancoil Hanging Bridge
Distance: Approx 100 Kms

We woke up at 5:00 AM had some hot tea and headed towards our 1st stop for the day which was Uluppuni viewpoint to catch the early sunrise. Once we reached the foothill, we could not find a way to the top where we could ride our bikes. We parked our bikes and continued to climb the hill on foot only to be disappointed with gloomy weather. The hill had a very steep incline and was really hard to climb, all our efforts counted to 0.

We spent sometime on the top with some cool breeze accompanying us, some jeeps started to arrive at the viewpoint with couple of tourists, had a friendly discussion with the driver and he said they charge around Rs.2000 for 2-3 hrs of jeep ride which covers all the view points, that's atrocious pricing. But with little to no public transport and rentals available, tourist's have no option but to cough up the prices decided by these jeep guys.

Planning to comeback in winter.



Returned back to our stay had breakfast and then started our ride towards the Idukki dam, our 2nd stop. Photography is strictly prohibited and we could not take any pictures of the dam. There are 2 dams here, one is the Cheruthony dam from where we enter, if you would like to view the Idukki dam up close there are shared battery vehicles operated by the Kerala govt, I don't recall the price, but was close to 20 - 50 Rs per person one way, it is a 2.5 km drive, one could also walk this distance if you would like to without paying anything. Both these dams were humongous in size and I can only imagine the destruction these dams did when the gates were opened during the Kerala floods.

Our final stop for the day was Ayyapancoil hanging bridge, attaching a couple of pictures.







Headed back towards our stay for dinner, played some UNO to kill time and hit the sack.

Day 3: Vagamon - Bangalore
Distance: 550 kms

I was terribly bored of the Dinidigul - Salem stretch and wanted to try the route via Palakkad - CBE - Bangalore, it gives me a chance to explore more of the scenic state of Kerala. I was overpowered by my buddies, who were worried about the time since the Kuthiran tunnel was still under construction and no one had an idea how the current situation of the road was. I just agreed and returned via the same route to Bangalore. (Zzzzzzz...)

Had a late lunch at Theni around 3:00 PM from Sree Gowmariamman Foods, Theni. Since it was a Sunday, the kitchen was almost closed by the time we sat for food. The waiter served us with whatever was left from the kitchen, the biryani was quite tasty, as well was the Pepper kitchen, bookmarked the restaurant for some other time and blasted towards Bangalore with 3/4th of a full stomach. (Zzzzzz...)

Reached E city toll at around 10:30 PM, said goodbye to the guys and reached home by 11 PM. All this time during the trip we were very cautious about the Coronavirus which was in it's initial stages in India and Kerala. We were even advised not to go ahead with this trip and I am glad we did.

Breakdown

1st Service (1000 Kms): Rs.1137
2nd Service (5000 Kms): Rs.295
3rd Service (10000 Kms): Rs.2500
4th Service: (15000 Kms): Rs.500

Service Total: Rs.7432 for 20,000 Kms
Fuel: Rs.42050 for 20,000 Kms

All the other charges under Bills come under charges for washing, chain lube & cleaners, accessories purchase and miscellaneous.

Verdict after 20,000 Kms

• Engine is much more refined and the NVC levels has reduced after multiple service.

• Stock brake pads, chain and sprockets have good amount of life still left in them, maybe because I use the bike only for the highways.

• Quality of plastic parts are top notch, no squeaks on rough roads and no colour fades, good job TVS.

• After sales support has gone down drastically from TVS. No response via emails and calls, something which TVS should review.

Am I happy with the purchase - Absolutely, with looks no less than a Ducati and maintenance costs in TVS standards, the RR310 can be considered as an entry level sports bike for those who don't like the aggressive stance of the KTM's nor the sedate Gixxer's.

A nicely penned ownership review brother. I am currently looking up for an upgrade to a quarter liter bike from my current Fazer (Snowfire) and found the RR310 quite a tempting option (also a faired bike lover, and a little too inclined for bikes that have bi-headlights). But the budget is a little too high for my ability as of now. So, confused between getting a used one or extending my budget to get a new one. But your review has made me finalize- its gonna be RR310 for sure, no turning back for me now. Happy to read such a good review. Thank you for sharing. Happy riding.

I completely missed your comment, I hope you have purchased the bike by now, there were huge discounts for BS4 RR310s in Bangalore not sure about Chennai, but the new BS6 version is worth every penny.

After 112 days since the last ride to Kerala, decided to go for a spin just to keep things moving. Did a very short breakfast ride to Thimappana Betta, some 60 odd kms from Bangalore, never was a fan of the place, but decided to give it a check.

Left home at 5:30 AM and had no idea that there would be traffic, let alone a km long truck traffic from BEL Circle with trucks trying to cross the railway bridge to reach Tumkur Rd, that bridge has deteriorated so much, I feel they are going to close it down any moment.

I took a diversion and reached Gorguntepalya Jn without any fuss and rode down outer ring road to reach Mysore Rd, it's been close to a year since I have been on Mysore Rd and boy I was in for a surprise. METRO Constructions, Road diversions, Potholes and I was cursing myself for not choosing a destination via Airport Rd.

Nevertheless, the boys chose the place and I had to stick with it, we had planned to reach the destination before sunrise, by the time we reached the place the sun was out and the early birds were already leaving the place.

We still clicked some pics though, here are a few.







The amount of shine on the bike was simply irresistible, TBH it had been very long since the bike had seen sunlight.



Hmm itching to get back on the saddle for those long rides.

Hi Fury 44, I couldn't get my hands on a bs4 RR310. Even though I had registered with the TVS website for a bs4 RR310. They had called back only to say that all their bs4 stocks are sold off and only the bs6 remains. Probably would have found a good deal on bs4, if I had put some effort into it by going to the dealer directly rather than just registering online.

Either way, as of now people at home are against me getting a new ride, reasoning with some horoscope not being right for me to get any new vehicle in this period (until December). Along with the corona effect running wild, I have decided to put this thought on hold till the start of a fresh 2021.

Certainly, I will be happy to share my experience here once I get my hands on an RR310. Until then, the dream shall continue by reading all the experiences of the wonderful RR310 riders.

There's this guy in every gang who doesn't show up to the ride at the last minute. Unfortunately I was that guy, before last week when I was all geared up and ready to go, a click on the ignition button and the bike failed to start (Screams!!), clicked a couple more times no use, tried to push start it in 2nd and 3rd gear in my lane, nope, nada, nothing. That was it, I was branded as the guy "who doesn't show up at the last minute". With little to no riding at all, the bike's battery had weakened and given up, had changed it over the week and wanted to make it up to the boys.

Planned a quick one to Sabbanahalli Lake, I didn't know such a place even existed, thanks to Tbhp bikers WhatsApp group from where I fixed on the location. We met near Esteem Mall and it was a straight blast towards Airport and Chickbalapur, nothing much to say, good roads, less vehicles and that is it. Once after we took left from the NH towards Gudibanda the roads suddenly turned picturesque, a newly tarred road with some twisties, well, well, this was turning out to be good. A little over 1.5 hrs we reach the place, surprised to see cars parked with a mini picnic like scene, they had bought in their dogs too who were having a heyday in the lake water.

Spent some quality time with friends, had a good laugh after so so long, found a couple of dead crabs and clicked some beautiful pictures as well. Here they are for your viewing.

Fury looks great with those background shots. I was wondering if anyone in your group got hands on BS6 version ? I need to know how does the bike hold up (from refinement perspective) at various speeds and rpms.

Can you share the same details for Fury ? i.e. on 6th gear - Speeds and refinement levels (any disturbing rattles, buzzes on seat or tank) on 7k / 8k / 9k / 10k RPM ?
