China’s Evoke Motorcycles plots India entry with electric bike

China’s Evoke Motorcycles plots India entry with electric bike-0.jpg

Quote:
According to Evoke Motorcycles, Project M1 seeks to fill the gap in the market for a competitively priced EV, which is pitched against 125cc to 150cc ICE-driven competitors.

The company’s India programme involves making India its vehicle design-centre and also a potential export and production hub. “This is something that’s on the cards,” says Nathan Siy, co-founder and CEO, Evoke Motorcycles, in an exclusive interaction with Autocar Professional.

At present, the company sells two models in China, Europe and USA — the Urban S and the Urban Classic (Generation 1) — which have European certification and homologation. Later this year, Evoke will launch the 6061, a premium cruiser-style bike.

One of the propositions the company brings through its electric two-wheelers is its proprietary patented fast-charging capabilities. In fact, Evoke claims that its bikes can be charged from zero to 80 percent in just 15 minutes. This could be a revolutionary breakthrough that can be a potential game-changer for increasing adoption of EVs globally.

And this is the biggest problem with EV's. At least in a city, that is manageable since you can find a charging point or at least an electric plug. The issue is when you are out on the highway. Finding a charging point is difficult and if you run out may god bless you. The only way these vehicles work is if current petrol pumps set up a charging infrastructure alongside their petrol and diesel pumps.

I wonder if HMSI will go after them for ripping off a CBR 150/250R

Update: Final design of the 6061 cruiser unveiled:

https://www.autocarpro.in/news-inter...-cruiser-42597

Also interesting is this quote from the first article:

Commenting on the company's outlook and plans for India, the world's biggest two-wheeler market, Nathan says, "Project M1 seeks to fill the gap in the market for a competitively priced EV, which is pitched against the 125cc to 150cc ICE-driven competitors. Project M1 is a result of the demand and interest from the Indian market. At Evoke Motorcycles, we are exploring the introduction of the new platform alongside our Evoke charging stations to assist in laying the footprint and infrastructure for EVs in the country."

As is the case with any Chinese company, they won't make a single nut or bolt locally. The entire bike will be imported even after sales picks up.

But wouldn't you agree that a vast majority of commuter bikes never see the highway? It's an often touted scenario as to why electric vehicles won't succeed, but for the 2 wheeler segment specially below 150 CC this point is moot for all practical purposes.

Also a reason why adoption outside cities like Bangalore could be faster than anticipated for this specific segment, if the value proposition is attractive enough.

Although, the association of the words Chinese and Electric vehicles won't help anyone's cause to be honest, going by blunders of past.

If you sell it in a large city and aim for city use only, it has to be a second vehicle. I have ridden my 150 cc bike between Bangalore and Coorg many times. Yes, I am fortunate enough to have a car, but for many people this may well be the only vehicle. In that case they would prefer a regular ICE bike to the EV. Not just EV's, but lack of a refuelling infrastructure is the problem for all alternate fuel vehicles

This is also what I am trying to point towards. Need to have more granularity on this, since a lot of people with just a bike would also take public transport for inter city commute.

Might also be a difference between north and south, but just to cite this purely from experience, most highways (at least in North) have very few bikes plying on them.

Couldn't agree more! Charging infrastructure with common standards and usability across cars/bikes is desperately required. If there's one area the Govt. should provide incentives and over-invest, this has to be it.

Is this actually a practical thought. A large part of the Indian population cannot afford a car, and unless they live in an area with good public transport/connectivity, their own bike makes more sense for commuting than waiting a couple of hours for a bus/train.

Yes, this might well be a difference between North and South India, or might just be a case of where I have seen this. Bangalore to Mysore is a 140 km trip with a town every 10 to 20 km, which means you see a lot of bikes on that highway. Are all of them travelling the entire distance, possibly not.

This is an area where you need vision and funds. The vision seems to be half there, with the Indian government wanting to have electric vehicles, yet when it comes to subsidising their sale, preferably by reducing the taxes they charge on it, they are loath to do so. Funds technically exist, though seeing how they can get electric vehicles to be adopted in more rural areas where electric shortages are the norm is more debatable

A very important thing that maybe adds to the credential is the fact that Foxconn is making this motorcycle. Foxconn happens to be the largest manufacturer of iPhones worldwide.
