According to a media report, Rakesh Gupta from the Satna district of Madhya Pradesh purchased a new Honda Activa 125 BS-VI on the occasion of Diwali but decided to pay for the same only in coins.

The on-road price of the scooter is said to be around Rs. 83,000. Denominations of Rs. 5 and Rs. 10 were used and it is reported that the dealership took 3 hours to count the change.

The Activa 125 is powered by a 124cc, single-cylinder engine with fuel-injection. It produces 8.18 BHP @ 6,500 rpm and 10.3 Nm @ 5,000 rpm. The scooter comes equipped with a 190 mm disc brake at the front and a 130 mm drum at the rear. It is the company's first BS-VI compliant scooter.

Just imagine what would have happened had he paid with Rs 1 and Rs 2 coins.

It would be a nice mathematics question for school children. It takes 3 people 3 hours to count 83000/- rupees in denominations of Rs 5 and 10. So how much time will it take for 3 people to count the same amount in denominations of Rs 1 and 2?

There was an incident some years ago, when a husband paid the divorce settlement of around 4-5 lakh rupees in coins of different denomination.

I can relate.
I wanted to withdraw Rs 20,000 for miscellaneous payments and the teller at my bank was encouraging me to take the amount in Rs 10 coins.
It seems that they had an abundance of those coins and no takers.
Not being the fool I usually am, I refused.

This reminds me of Samsung paying a fine using coins

Wow, 83K for an Activa. I still remember paying Less than 50K back in 2003 for Honda Activa.

Forget less than 50k. I had paid 35k for my Activa in 2003. This included the front storage box, seat cover etc. Then I bought the 125cc Activa with disc brakes in 2014 for 67k. How the hell it became costlier by 16k in just 5 years?

Looks like we can relate the Activa with the Innova/Fortuner duo. Both are Japanese. Both have a kind of monopoly in their respective segments. Both are known for bullet proof reliability. And most importantly both became costlier by more than twice their original price in a span of approximately 10 years. Looks like the day won't be far when we will be paying 1 lakh rupees for an Activa.

True said Ram87pune. It could have been that amount for me. Its appalling to see such a price hike. I bought a Pulsar 220 for less than 85K in 2010. I am feeling old now after talking about 2003 and 2010.

The top-end in Bangalore is Rs.1,02,000 at Silicon Honda. Would have meant 'much, much' more coins at the dealership. LOL

Actually there is a concept of Legal Tender Money in India(L.T.M). 50Paise is L.t.m upto 10 rupees and 1 ruppes upto 999 rupees.

Rs. 2 and above are unlimited L.t.m.

The article does not mention why he decided to pay for it in coins. Maybe he thought he would like to match the weight of the vehicle with the coin payment.

On a different note, I have been contemplating paying my next year's property tax in Re. 1 coins. That way, I can get the BBMP guys to work at least while connecting the money!
