TVS has launched its 2020 Apache range of bikes, which include the BS6 compliant RTR 200 4V and RTR 160 4V. The former is priced at Rs. 1,24,000, while the latter costs Rs. 99,950 and Rs. 1,03,000 (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the drum and disc brake variant respectively.

The new Apache RTR series of bikes come with a new LED headlamp, fuel-injection and a new low-speed riding mode called 'Glide Through Traffic'.

The Apache RTR 200 4V is powered by a 197.75cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine that produces 20.2 BHP @ 8,500 rpm and 16.8 Nm @ 7,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox via slipper clutch. The bike also gets dual-channel ABS and Rear Wheel Lift-off Protection (RLP).

The Apache RTR 160 4V is powered by a 159.7cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine that produces 15.8 BHP @ 8,250 rpm and 14.12 Nm @ 7,250 rpm. The engine is paired with a 5-speed transmission.

Looks nice, especially the one in black with the red accents. Sad to notice the drop in torque figures due to BS6 implementation, though. The engine of the original Apache RTR200 had great low-end torque which made it a joy to ride in city conditions. Hope that characteristic has not been affected.

Wonder what this Glide Through Traffic mode is. Is it some kind of switchable drive mode like the ones found in cars?

Oh gosh, did anyone notice the drop in torque values for the 200 4v? It has fallen from 18.1 NM @7000 RPM to 16.8 NM @7500 RPM (7.1% drop and at 500 RPM higher) while the power has marginally reduced from 21 PS (for FI variant) to 20.2 PS at same RPM. The torque is similar to 180 cc engine levels now! :Frustrati

Please help me.

As like everyone, I am disappointed with the reduction in torque.
Smart X connect feature is buggy as per reviews I read in Google Play for that app. Expecting fine tuning from TVS in coming days.

After my wonderful 9 years and 72000kms with my Apache 160 Fi, I am looking to upgrade to RTR 200.

After experiencing the reliable (atleast till 55000 km & Fi failure), trouble-free, low cost maintenance, smooth yet powerful ride, awesome exhaust note, I want to stick with Apache stable.

Why RTR 200 and not RTR 160V or 180?
I want Dual channel ABS for my next ride though I am satisfied with the power of 160cc. I would love some extra torque though.

My dilemma now:
BS IV RTR 200 with Carburettor or BS VI RTR 200 with Fuel injection?


My 2010 RTR 160Fi had fuel injector failure at 6 years, 55000kms. But I couldn't find spare as TVS had stopped production of 160Fi in 2010. I searched for months, was in direct touch with TVS, but to no avail. As a last resort, I had my bike converted by adding 160cc's carburettor and my bike has run for 2.5 years and 17000km with Carburettor.

I had preferred Fuel injector way back in 2010 but now I prefer good old Carburettor for ease of repair as I commute daily to rural areas. I keep my motorcycle for 7-10 years.

On the other hand, as TVS has stopped Carburettor versions and moved towards Fuel injection permanently post BS VI and if RTR 200 shares its Fuel Injector with RTR 160 which sells 10 times more than RTR 200 (both are Bosh Closed loop FI), then I can go ahead with RTR 200 FI without fear of unavailability of spares.

BS IV Carburettor RTR 200:
Pros:
Cheaper by Rs.10,000.
Carb is simpler to repair and maintain. Fi failure is one less thing to worry about.

Cons:
Moving in reverse direction when the world is moving towards Fi.
Misses out LED headlamps though it has halogen bulb of the same 55W rating.

BS VI Fi RTR 200:
Pro:
LED headlamps.
I can't think of anything else.

Cons:
Costlier by Rs.10000+.
My fear of Fi failure and whether replacement Fi kit will be available in future.
7% reduction in torque.

My dilemma now:
BS IV RTR 200 with Carburettor or BS VI RTR 200 with Fuel injection?

If the CARB version is performing as good as FI version, why do you care if the bike is carb or FI? With BS VI, not only are you paying 10,000 more but also loosing out on torque. (Not that 7% will be noticeable).
With more and more vehicles moving to FI, I don't think servicing FI will be that big of a problem in future.

However my suggestion is to save the money and go for BS IV variant.

The drop in torque is very evident in BS6 scooters. Case in point is Honda Activa. Just ride both versions back to back, and you see the new version is a pale shadow. So yes get the BS4, while you still can.

Go for the Carb RTR 2.0 with ABS. Not only will you be paying out more for the FI and losing out on power and torque, the carb version is just as good and easy to maintain by yourself (if you are into DIY). Since you will be riding in rural areas, the fuel quality could be suspect, apart from trained mechanics.

Also, if you are waiting for fire sale towards the end (Feb/March), please do note that manufacturers are being wise this time and apart from the high end or slow selling models, it might not happen. So go for it till stocks last :D
