Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

The 3rd addition to the collection - my KTM Adventure 390 was delivered on 12th June. The other 2 bikes are a 2009 RE Classic 350 and a 2016 Kawasaki er-6n. Was looking for a light weight, nimble and reliable touring machine - almost bought the RE Himalayan BS6 but RE became unresponsive even after Unlock 1.0, and KTM had stock to deliver.

Completed the 1st service after hitting the 1000 km milestone with a combination of city rides and a few 100-150 km trips out on the highways. The build & ride quality continue to be great. I got myself tuned to the low end torque of the bike and there is no plan to do any modifications, which is how I like to keep all my vehicles. I am 6'4" and totally in love with the tall seating posture.

The only niggle was the "check engine oil" light the came up about 6 times. The dangerous part of this is that the engine cuts off at whatever speed you are at. Raised the concern with the service center, they updated the ECU - hoping this is solved for the longer term.

The quick shifter works like a charm, especially while downshifting from 6th->5th->4th while decelerating or to use engine braking. Anything closer to the 2000 rpm, makes it jerky

The radiator has a plastic casing on top of a metal mesh which seems ok to hold off any road debris from hitting the fins, so not adding a radiator guard as of now.

Noticed rust on one of the washer type thing holding the silencer - looks like a chipped off coating, otherwise, paint quality is top notch.

The open chain near the left footpeg may throw up chain lube, will have to find a solution if it does.

P.S - one of my first few posts, so please bear with me for anything out of place

Yeah, it is a problem. But I believe it is much more manageable with black alloys aesthetically as compared to orange ones in other 390s. It looks really bad and alloys need cleaning every couple of hundred kms. Can anyone share experience with dry type of chain lube, any specific brands?

Congratulations and welcome to forum.

Either I have had no problems or I just don’t care or the rest of the bike is in worse condition than the left peg

80w90 or 140 grade gear oil depending on weather conditions. 80 grade in summer, 140 in rain. Cheap, effective and just slobber the chain with it every 400 odd kms. Since it’s cheap, dabbing extra is not a problem. But the bike will get dirt real fast.

If insistent on dry lube, mucoff all weather and putoline have good feedback.

I am also using Motul All Gear 80w90 on Xpulse as it is my daily ride now and I don't mind it geting dirty. It lasts good for 400-500 kms. For 390, I use OKS which I found better than Motul C2 but leaves marks on orange alloys.

Putoline is quite expensive preferably good for big bikes, I am content with cleaning the alloys rather spending 1800 on a Rs. 2800 chain set every few weeks.

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

Thanks ast.ggn. I use the Putoline for my Kawasaki and it doesn't throw any muck at all. Waxpol chain lube for the RE keeps it in good shape. Intend to use the Waxpol for the Adv 390 too

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

I have an observation. There are a lot of stickers on the bike. One of the stickers on the hand protectors say "KTM390DOM"

The "DOM" clearly means "Domestic".

Makes me wonder whether they have separate quality for export. If they do, that will piss me off!

Also, a noob question, since I'm new to biking. I've ridden my bike around 900km but haven't lubed the chain yet. I was not aware that one has to lube chains every 400 kms. Have I caused damage?

I noticed my 390 ADV wouldnt start when in gear and holding the clutch. Also, while my bike was parked someone had the gaul to loosen my left side rear view mirror. I tried putting it back but the slot twirl went busto (questionable build quality). So I went to the KTM East Delhi service centre in Patparganj Industrial Area. I was really taken aback by the lax attitude of the staff.

Firstly, the guy who makes the job card was gaming on his phone even when I was trying to talk to him. This is the guy that is supposed to greet visitors and be the main point of contact. For a moment I thought, let me take a picture of this guy and mail it to KTM.

Next, this service centre isn't even aware the 390 ADVs need to get updated fuel pipe and calliper bolt. When I told them that is has to be done in the first service, they said "we have not got any information yet". Then I showed them a YouTube video and finally they believed me. Now they've placed an order for the updated fuel pipe and calliper bolt. It will take a month to arrive to them!!

For the left rear view mirror, they didnt have the mount in stock. I told the engineer "I really need it because it is a useful aid." The engineer replied "just take off the other rear mirror too if you're bothered by having just one". That was not expected from KTM staff. I would have given him a piece of my mind but I am way past doing those things, because it wont change anything. These guys should be promoting the use to safety aids like Rear view mirrors but they're clearly doing the opposite of it.

For the start problem in gear, it's got something to do with the clutch lever. On setting "5" position, the bike wont start in gear, but on other settings, it will start. The engineer says, "that's how it is. there's nothing that can be done. Just use the "4" setting." Honestly, in traffic, my left hand aches due to the clutch. The engineer said "its not the bikes fault. It's the traffic's fault." Exactly his words.

Does anybody have experience with any other KTM service centre in Delhi with professional engineers? I would love some recommendations. Just 100km to go for first service.

I had similar issue of engine cutting off. During 1st service they cleaned the injectors and checked all the connectors. I haven't ridden much after the first service . Please share the ECU software version and keep this thread updated. Thanks

You can actually start saying that you've got yourself a "Monsoon Grey special edition" I'm actually digging the grey scheme more than the white! (I know I know it's the color correction at work here)
