That depends on Motorcycle, but coming to the point this is the safest means to go down a broken trail, you cannot get the precision you get with your hand from your foot.

As for clutch wear it's minimal, to the point that if you hold in your clutch with the motor firing and use rear brake you'd be using up more clutch.

Practically by using clutch as brake with the engine killed you'd be using up about as much clutch as one would use when moving the motorcycle in his/her parking lot with the clutch pulled in and engine off. In short, absolutely miniscule impact on clutch life that it's not worth thinking about.

Just give it some though and it'd register, hence why this is a universal technique.

Regards,
A.P.

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

Got a call from the service center (Mekhri Circle, Bangalore) asking me to bring my bike in for a software update and some part change related to the rear mudguard.

Has anyone received a similar call or already gone through with this?

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

So I went to the service center today. Turns out the front mudguard had to be replaced - just the little rubber piece at the bottom. The software was already up to date. Took 10 minutes.

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

Had an amazing ride last weekend to Upper Vaitarna from Mumbai. Though overall road condition was good, there were some broken patches on Ghoti - Vaitarna road where riding the 390 ADV was fun! Return leg was a bit painful because we got stuck in mad traffic, first at the base of Kasara ghat due to police roadblock for some checking and then even worse traffic just before Thane due to farmer's protest! But overall an amazing ride!

Sharing few photos of the destination and the drone footage I shot!

Guys do check for the fuel tank crack issue. It seems that many are facing this issue and presumably one rider suffered a fair bit.

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

Did this nice little ride recently to Jadhavwadi Dam near Pune. Really enjoyed our time there at the dam. On the way back visited Induri fort - built in 1720-21 by Sarsenapati Khanderao Yesajirao Dabhade. Few bastions are still in good condition but overall the fort is neglected and in bad condition. Some of the carvings on the entrance are eye-catching. And the temple of goddess Kadjai is very peaceful.

Talking about the ADV, my wife liked the pillion seat comfort. Even after 250+ km she didn't feel much discomfort.

Booking & Delivery Experience
First Orange Encounter | 16-Nov-20
A random walk into the KTM Thane showroom turned out to be quite an eventful experience. I was keen on buying an Adventure tourer to replace my RR310 but I had not imagined it would happen the day I set foot in the KTM showroom just for an inquiry. My first question to KTM representatives in the showroom was, “Do you have exchange offers?” The answer was a positive “Yes”. They quickly got me an acceptable deal for my RR310 through their tie up and within no time the entire process for a new bike began. There was no waiting period for the bike, finance from HDFC bank was a smooth affair and in a matter of a couple of weeks I was ready to bring my first bike from the KTM stable home. The registration process took approximately 8-10 days post full payment. The KTM staff in Thane were swift with the process and I never had a situation where they did not return my calls or I did not get an update, although I did pester them a lot for the RTO process

The Deal
KTM 390 Adventure cost me 3.65L On Road Thane. HDFC offered finance at 11.5% ROI which came up to 7K per month for 36 months. I paid 1.5L as down payment towards the bike. I received a standard warranty of 2 years or 30K kms plus additional warranty of 3 years or 45K kms. I also received 1 year Roadside Assistance as part of my deal along with some basic freebies like Motorcycle cover and keychain.

Likes:
  • Ergonomics: I love the wide handlebars and the rider triangle works well for me in all conditions except while standing. I am 6 feet tall and it’s an awkward stance while standing, I think risers might solve this problem.
  • Engine: It’s refined by KTM standards in BS6 avatar. Get past 2500 rpm and the bike delivers power all the way up to the redline without any hesitation. It’s smooth and ride by wire does make life easier for long highway hauls.
  • Road Focused: It performs really well on open roads and is off-road capable to some extent. It excels on highway riding yet has the potential to chew up a lot of dirt roads.
  • Suspension: It’s on the stiffer side which gives it incredibly good highway manners and it also puts a smile on your face while cornering in ghats (would feel even better with better tires). On the flip side, while offroading and hitting sharp undulations it transfers all the impact on the back.
  • Brakes: Love them! Sharp bite and stops the bike in no time. Squeaks under hard braking though.
  • Seats: Seats are hard but I liked it because it does n’t lose its shape or feel too spongy and keeps the rider comfortable for long durations (15 Hours / 900 kms in one day tested)
  • Tank Range / ‘Kitna Deti Hai’: The bike comes with a 14.5L tank and I always get a decent range of 320-350 kms between fill ups. Fuel Efficiency hovers between 30-32 kmpl with a mix of 80% highway and 20% city riding. Low Fuel indicator comes on way too early and one can still do 50 odd kms with ease before fueling up. I have started fueling up when my range is between 50-75 kms to empty rather than 130 kms to empty when the indication comes on.

Dislikes:
  • Stalling Issue: My bike does have a stalling issue, the bike does stall once in a while when I engage clutch to downshift in 4th and 3rd gears mostly. I have tried to even switch off the quickshifter to see if that helps but it still doesn't. KTM Andheri's Sr. Technician did some checks and I'll run it few 100 km's now to check if the issue is fixed.
  • Tires: The bike comes stock with MRF Meteor tires. They are just about adequate. Not much to talk about when it comes to feel and feedback. I hope I am able to clock enough miles before the monsoon to replace them. Even at high speeds, it does not inspire much confidence.
  • Headlight: I expected better illumination. Aux Lamps would be a good addition but holding on since I am not sure how that impacts the warranty.
  • Mirrors: Small in size and doesn't provide a great rear view. Creates Blind spots.
  • Lack of Centre Stand: There must be a reason why KTM did n’t offer it even as an accessory. It would have been a good addition for the bike's touring credential.

Other Observations:
  • Overall build quality is good. Fit and Finish is up to the mark. The only flaw I found was that one of my rear foot pegs clip was loose. The paint quality is good, the white fiber panels are painted in gloss and do well to shine under sunlight whereas the tank & front fender are painted Matt Black which may help in durability.
  • I liked the Aluminium handlebars, they felt sturdy and built well. The switchgear is easy to use. All the switches are placed exactly where your fingers would be looking for them - The Pass light, toggling the TFT using the 4 buttons, horn and indicator switches.
  • The seats are firm and may require some getting used too. Pillion seat is comfortable and long rides should be doable. The seat height is tall at 855 mm and it may not be suitable for short riders. I am 6 feet tall and I have no issues getting both my feet planted on the ground.
  • Exhaust note is bassy and it’s a satisfying sound for a single cylinder.
  • Engine delivers great power output and is rev happy. It’s a little lethargic in low end but once you get past the low end, the power is blissful and one can enjoy this pocket rocket to the fullest on our roads. There are no engine heating issues however the fan does get switched on early to keep heat in check. Luckily no tandoori legs yet.
  • Vibrations are minimal and honestly I am pleasantly surprised with how less vibey it feels when rode sedately. Having said that it does get vibey at higher revs and it’s a matter of getting used to it. By no stretch of imagination can I call the vibes annoying or too uncomfortable.
  • Another observation with this bike in particular which I have not experienced in any of my previous bikes is that 390 Adventure’s tank has a fuel dispenser stopper which basically restricts the fuel attendant from inserting the fuel nozzle deep in the tank resulting in fuel spills. Caution is required while filling fuel and a message needs to be passed to the fuel attendant to hold the nozzle rather than shoving it in the tank.

Mods: I have not added many things but I plan to add a few things in future. I will keep this thread updated as and when I change things in the motorcycle. For now, I have added 2 things only i.e. Adventure Conquest TFT Protector - Love the product and execution. The peace of mind it offers that the TFT screen will be scratch less is unmatched. Highly recommended to add. Costs Rs.999 + shipping. Second product is basically swing arm spools so that I can mount the bike on a paddock stand.

Thoroughly enjoyed riding the 390 Adventure on all different types of roads I came across except on those very straight and boring highways I missed my Ninja 1000 thats all. Only gripe was the abrupt stalling issue once in a while.

KTM 390 Adventure is my first proper adventure touring motorcycle so more than the pro’s and con’s, I would like to say that I am enjoying the whole experience of riding a comfortable motorcycle. The upright stance, the mileage and tank range, the known fact that it won't break my bank in maintenance makes me want to ride it more and more. This introduction to adventure touring is a gateway to countless memories and adventures which await. The Orange Affair has just begun!

I had the exact symptoms. Try changing the clutch switch next the clutch lever.

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

So I recently got the first service done and then took the bike for a long spin of 1100kms on mix of highway, expressway, hills & mildly off road.

Sans the buzzing & unrefined expressway speeds of 120 & beyond, the bike rides awesome on street & highways while being easily maneuverable in hills and that makes me feel good about the buying decision.

Summary of life with Adv390 so far-

Accessories installed:
1. Headlight & TFT screen protector - Adventure Conquest
2. Aux lights - Maddog
3. Wind Screen & GPS mount - Carbon racing
The wind screen is translucent so the see through is limited in fading light but does the wind protection job to a reasonably good extent
4. Flasher - Nighthawk
Extra horn - Hella
5. Soft grips - RE mech shop ; fraction of cost of grip puppies

Aside, recently got the budget Parani Blue tooth intercom for 2 helmets and used it heavily on this ride. Worked out well overall just that my son would also hear my not-so-good words when I would curse at someone driving like a nut on the roads; I need to meditate, lol.

Likes:
1. After the first service, the power delivery in 1st & 2nd gear feels improved; goin till ~25 & 45 kmph without the engine feeling stressed
2. The quick shifter works like a charm in high revs) from 3--6--3
3. Overall quality & refinement below 100kmph feels nice
4. Ability to lean hard entering and through curves and be stable on exit
5. flickable in city & gallops finely on highway
6. Adjustable gear lever - for varying boots

Dislikes
1. Seat - Just not good enough for long distance; rider's or pillion's.
2. Radiator fan - is a constant companion even though the engine temp bars never go beyond four of eight
3. Stalling issue that's been discussed here

Pictures to tell more about the trip:

Yes, I have rode them back to back. I had a friend's X300 for short period and have done close to 1000 kms on it.

X300 scores high in engine refinement, smooth power delivery and slick gear shifts. It has a more natural standing position compared to 390 Adventure. Seat is comfier, in general feels less vibey and does a better job at wind protection. Bigger Fuel Tank too. X300 lacks the outright punch in performance which 390 Adv delivers. Features and Technology are leagues ahead in 390 Adventure. Better GC, Suspension travel and headlight illumination as well for 390 Adv.

Given the atrocious pricing and expensive service and spare parts cost with Kawasaki, I would any day still pick a 390 Adventure.

Can't wait to see Twin Cylinder KTM 490 Adventure launch next year!

I'm getting this issue in my BS6 D390, will be doing this fix as suggested by you. Did the issue pop up again ?
