Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

SO!

I got my 390 ADV serviced.

Facts!
Previous service at 4,457 kms
Current service at 10,800 kms

Oil drained - 1,100 ml.
Mind it, before the service (just 3 days before) when I checked the oil window, I saw nothing, so topped up around 150 ml.

So overall, between the service interval, my bike dropped from 1750 ml to 950 ml
Standard new oil refill is now 1.7L + the service guys top up additional 50 ml.

On my Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai ride, I was high speed cruising for a long time. But should that result in so much of oil burn?

No update for the speedo screen flickering (vignette issue). I am on the latest software update, but the screen does flicker especially under HOT sun.
Quickshifter is a hit and miss, moody fellow

But still, I have so much fun on this one, that I purchased extended warranty. So now it stands at 2+2. So planning to keep the bike at least till Q1 of 2024.

Unless the 490 Twin comes soon and casts a spell on me

What is the condition of the tyres (Metzeler or MRF) ? How long do you think they'll last ?

It is quite possible with high revving engines, which is the characteristic of KTM's obviously.

During my recent Uttarakhand - Rajasthan trip, I had topped up oil at Delhi. On returning back after covering 4000 odd kilometers, noted that the bike has burned 1 liter of oil.

So it is quite possible.

Tyres are looking great. I am sure I can ride with them for a good 10,000+ kms more (Hopefully).
I have the first lot bike, so running on Metzelers.

I will be making it a habit to carry a small oil pack for my next rides.

Report to service guys, it seems to be some loose connector or throttle by wire issue. Jerks can happen at low RPM but no at the range you mentioned.
This problem persists with my 20 day old bike. Quick Shifter warnings frequently and intermittently during the first 1000km and after the first service, the jerking began and that led to the quick shifter sensor being replaced after the ECU was re-flashed with v1.09. The fuel line was changed to address the jerks even though it didn't look kinked to me. The quick-shift worked, briefly.

The jerks continue unabated however, they now occur in every time a gear is changed in every gear except the 6th and the technicians appear clueless about the cause. The quick shifter currently isn't even working and I ended up disabling the quick-shift function from the menu.

The bike now performs how it should after the quick shifter was disabled. I've been asked to bring the bike in for checks but having been through with it a few times, I'm not expecting an early solution to be found.

Could you elaborate on how the issue was fixed with your bike please?

Slightly off-topic here!

Does the burning of oil increase the emissions(pollution) of the bike?

So the bike lost 800 ml of oil in ~6400 km of running. That is around 125ml/1000km. Not alarming, but not fine either. I nowadays lose a similar amount of oil on my P220, but that engine is 85k km old.

Is this a known issue on all KTM 390s (Duke/RC/ADV)? Or are some worse affected than others?

What is the reason for this oil loss? Is it happening due to the super lean mixture? Or some other reasons? Has someone tried custom maps/ Power Commander to try and resolve the issue?

That is a lot of questions. I hope I can get the answers.

70-100 ml depending on how hard and how hot a weather you ride in per 1000 kms is normal according to KTM factory rep. Top up every 2,000 kms.

Its a very high compression single cyl engine. That is the reason.

Custom maps or power commander could help theoretically by improving fuel air mixture, but compression ratio will not change and hence your oil consumption should remain.

Difficult for me to accept too.

But at 12.6:1 its still lower compression that the first lot Duke 390 that many of us ride (12.9:1).

I've never topped up oil in my Duke. Not once.

Simple 5000 km to 5000 km service and oil change. Whatever the authorized center has. Nothing fancy.

Cheers, Doc

Yeah. I tend to ride longer than that between service intervals. For now i have been keeping a 6k interval, but on longer trips it is not possible, so topping up is the only option to stay around the 7.5-10k range.

KTM is still an exotic in some parts of the country.

I do think the duke also drinks oil, but just that within a 5k range nobody really probably bothers checking what the oil levels are. Or am i mistaken? I used the first gen 390 for a good months too and never checked the oil window within the 5-6k interval

I've been riding Bullets for over 10 years. One eye on the oil level at all times is hardwired into my DNA.

In fact, one 500 ml plactic bottle is always there in my saddlebag, and another in my right toolbox. On tour. After some time I would forget about the one in the toolbox, and with the engine heat some nasty stuff was imagined happening to it sitting there for months and sometimes more, and I would simply throw that bottle away and replace it with a fresh one.

The Duke does not drink oil.

It does not even sip it.

If indeed this is an Adventure specific thing, something somewhere has gone horribly wrong.

But there is rb2399 here who has toured thousands of kilometers across India on his Adventure and when asked, he clearly said he did not have this issue.

Initially, my suspicion was keeping on returning to the fact that both you and Jaggu prefer exotic oils different from company specs. But then rb2399 also loves exotic oils, though he is a stickler for company specs.

Cheers, Doc

I think I had stated this before, but here it goes anyway: My ADV has crossed the 24000 KMs mark and can safely confirm that the oil level has practically remained the same between the Oil Change Intervals (~ 6K mark). Not to question anyone's judgement but the way I measure it is: bring her to operating temperature (that's 4 bars) and switch off the engine, wait for a minute or two and check the oil level in the sight glass while keeping her perfectly balanced.

I've tried a variety of brews on the ADV 390, the list being: Motul 7100 10W-50, Amsoil Metric 10W-40,Mobil 1 10W-40 and Shell Advance Ultra 10W-40

No, the problem is pronounced in a vast majority of bikes. I met the factory rep and he confirmed that 70-100ml per 1k depending on operating conditions is normal. Jaggu has a similar thing going as well. Maybe our piston rings haven't set properly? Who knows.

Bikes abroad have also seen a similar issue - not all but some.

i dont care much about this, i just top up and get on with my life, so the doomsday predictions can rest. This bike has done and is doing way more than what i expected on all my trips closing in on 18k.

I wonder if the new generation duke 390's have a similar oil consumption nature.

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

After a couple of riding weekends back to back, Odo stands at 7,250 kms in 4 months of ownership. It seems like the 390 Adventure has got its hook deep in me and I just feel like riding it more and more with every ride. Is it just me I wonder? Last I felt this way about riding was during my Ninja 650 days back in 2013. This bike is playful, it's fun and easy in all aspects. It's like a kid which throws tantrums at times but I still love it for its pure essence of riding.

A new issue has cropped up since my last update at 4,000 kms - Cold Start Issue, I did not have this problem for 4,000 kms and now it's omnipresent. Every time I start my bike at start of the day, 9 out of 10 times I am bound to face this issue. It takes 4-5 cranks for the bike to hold on to revs. My 2nd service is due in a month's time and I will highlight this as one of the issue to be fixed. Another issue I noticed was riding under hot sun non stop makes the TFT console flicker a bit however it's not so much that it will be bothersome and it does come back normal after some time. It is just one of things I noticed and now am aware of.

The bike holds its ground firm while riding along side bigger capacity motorcycle and it blends right in except those arrow straight national highways where big bikes can cruise much more effortlessly. Having said that it's not far behind either and this is one balanced motorcycle. I must add I had a gala time riding it in ghats and my friend riding Tiger along side could n't help but get nostalgic of good old riding days. The bike is planted and inspite of being shod with MRF tires, I was having the time of my life once I got myself in groove. I can't help but imagine how much more fun the bike will be once I slap some Metzeler Tourance tires on it.

That's all for now, some pictures of the 2 rides I did.
  • Thane - Kolhapur - Panhala - Thane (900 kms)
  • Thane - Nipani - South Goa via Amboli and Return (1365 kms)

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

My friend has booked a 390 adventure. The sales manager confirmed 2021 models which he has delivered this month are all shod with Metzelers. Anyone here who bought recently who can confirm if this is indeed the case or if the bike comes with MRF tyres?
