Rumour: Royal Enfield developing sub-650cc engine platform

According to a media report, Royal Enfield is developing a new engine platform that will slot in between the 350cc and 650cc.

Rumour: Royal Enfield developing sub-650cc engine platform-royalenfieldinterceptor650mileage.jpg

According to Vinod Dasari, CEO, Royal Enfield, demand for very high-end products is waning. However, the mid-sized market is expected to grow. The 500cc and above segment in India has grown four times since the launch of the 650cc Twins.

It has been reported that Royal Enfield's product development teams in the UK and India could leverage the infrastructure that is already in place for existing engines and frames. In addition to the new platform, the company could also modify the existing 350cc and 650cc platforms.

Let's play the guessing game for a minute. Himalayan is 411 cc with a bore x stroke of 78 x 86. What happens when they bore it out square - 86 x 86. That's 499.56 cc. Sid Lal understands platforms. There is something to be said for square engines, will be interesting if this indeed pans out.

I think its easier to reduce the stroke to match the bore than increase the bore and change the shape and other particulars of the engine, in the same line of thought If RE builds a square engine with Bore and Stroke being 78mm it would be a 372.713 CC engine, Rounded off to 375 CC.

Now I'm wondering if their 350cc Engine was a square engine?

Increasing the bore substantially may also cause reliability problems, which I believe could be due to the cylinder liners and cylinder block having reduced stiffness because of material being stripped away by the larger bore diameter, hence reducing overall ability to handle the combustion and stroke-related stresses.

If you're referring to the current pushrod-based 350 cc single cylinder Royal Enfield air-cooled engine, no, it is not a square engine, as it has a 70 mm bore and 90 mm stroke, so it is an under-square engine.

Enfield has been doing this for decades - all the pushrods 350CI, 500CI, the AVLs, 350 UCE, 500UCE, 535GT et al have 90mm stroke. RE has been varying the bore along with quite a few other changes to bump up the capacity. Let's face it, RE engines arent about performance, but that is Okay.

The exception was the Egli Super bullet which borrowed the bore from the 535 at 87mm and increased the stroke to 105mm yielding a displacement of 624cc. So you have a valid point, since the 624 was perhaps the only bullet that could break the ton easily.

There have been plenty of comments about Himalayan engine being a more substantial lump than the 411cc would suggest. The crank cases a little too retro to entirely suit the extrovert personality of the bike.

Re: Rumour: Royal Enfield developing sub-650cc engine platform

Any chance that the new motor could be a smaller twin cylinder instead?

They had the 500, but stopped it recently. And once again developing an all new engine of a similar capacity?

They should make a sweet sounding 350 cc twin like the Triumph 3T. They can also introduce retro models like the flat tank models with this small engine. I feel they are just playing with colors and graphics. Even the original interceptor is more powerful and is 750 cc. Common platform and cost saving is needed for being competitive so cant blame them.
