Re: Bajaj Platina 100 Kick Start launched at Rs. 51,667

There were days CT100 & Platina had different engine spec, power & torque figures. That's understandable, target customers are different. On the other hand, Hero had multiple models with same 100cc engine, but the styling was completely different (Splendor, Passion, Dawn, etc)

Somehow I fail to understand how Bajaj is managing to sell multiple models with similar look, similar engine price, similar price tag, CT100 for an example costing 46k has similar looks, similar engine spec.

I looked into official website. It does have very minimal basic differences as follows,

1. With or without disc brakes,
2. Seat height (platina is 807mm whereas ct100 should be 800 or so),
3. Suspension (platina 100 has 135mm in front and 110mm in rear ,ct100 has 125mm in front and 100mm in rear),
4. Wheelbase ct100 is 1235mm vs platina is 1255mm, so on and so forth.
5. Overall dimensions vary by few mm and platina is 2kgs or so more.
6. Both have tube type tyres and platina 110 hgear has tubeless.CT110 still has tube type but different tread tyres.
Looks like there could be some field study done to make this subtle differences wherein it might cater to customers of different body types and age. Also position ct100 as economical model compared to platina. For sure we could see this with hero hf deluxe and splendor 100 also as an example in other competitors.

In the earlier days the Platina and CT100 still shared the same engine albeit in a different shade, CT100 had a white engine whereas the Platina came with a gray one.

The only Platina to offer an alternative engine was the Platina 125.

Though I doubt they sold simultaneously cause when I went for the D100 the Platina was available but not the CT100 and when I'd gone for the CT100 the Platina was nowhere to be seen, at least the one with the old Kawasaki motor.

Currently the difference is just cosmetic exactly what Hero is doing with its 100cc lineup. If you look really close you'd notice niche nuances but nothing worth the effort in the long run.

Though one thing to note is that Bajaj's current lineup of commuters are strictly Long Strokes, in all honesty a breath of fresh air. I love my CT100B(Kawasaki Short Stroke) but riding a screamer within city limits and off-road is a PITA and does start to get on one's nerves after a while.

A.P.
