re: Ola's made-in-India Electric scooter, now launched at Rs. 99,999

Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal's interview:

Evo India says that the scooter will come with three swappable batteries, just like Etergo. Top speed will be more than the competitors, close to 100kmph.

Stupid question - is this scooter meant for personal buyers or for rental purpose ?

(I feel that rental model would be better, since the user need not worry about charging the battery)

I really really wish they succeed in building a strong export base in India. More than the Indian consumer, the Indian economy really needs this.
While we have a lot of e-commerce, service based startups, we have had very limited success with manufacturing / product based startups. Hopefully this will start a new trend of entrepreneurs setting up manufacturing base in India. Badly needed to generate jobs and grow the economy.

Rohan
Having rental batteries raises a question in my mind about how do we know if the battery is running optimally?

For e.g.
I pay Rs.200 for 1 swap, the battery is new and I get 100kms from it
Next time I pay same Rs.200 for 1 swap, but the battery charging cycle is near to its end and it only gives me 50kms for the same riding style.

May be they should charge per kilometers instead. You swap a battery at 200 kms on odo and ride 100 kms; they note it in their system and its reflected your mobile app. Next time when you replace it they note the increased kms and charge you for it (But the odo should be tamperproof)

Oh wow, such a beautiful scooter ! Love the clean smooth lines, no gaudy stickers or panels !
Not sure about LED lights and curved up footboard though. A flat footboard would have looked a lot better and much useful to carry grocery bags or purses. Looking forward to pricing and range it would provide in real world scenarios.

The scooter surely is a looker!

Today's article in the-Ken also highlights
a) the overly optimistic timelines they are working on and the article hints that it may be to secure another round of funding.
b) the ability and the will to pivot their businesses at short notice (would be unheard of in Indian manufacturing).

Note: The article may be under paywall.

I feel this could be targetted at the Bounce scooter market and not really consumers. The price they expect this to come out to is around $4500 based on an interview in an auto mag and at that price i do not see an activa buyer actually switching to a 2.8 lac scooter.

We would need an Aam aadmi Ola scooter similarly to the demand for one from Ather.

Majority of scooter buyers are very budget conscious which is depicted by the sales. College kids, girls with their first scooter, people wanting a vehicle they can go around the city in for small errands and not really buying it for the snob value. Till you get the price right Honda will be the big daddy in this market no matter what the fuel price is at.

It won't be priced that high. Founder Bhavish Aggarwal has said that the current offerings in the EV segment are all positioned as premium products while what they are aiming for is a mass market product. This will most likely be priced around Rs 1-1.2L. I have shared the link to his interview above. You should check that out. The prices that you are expecting must have been reported by that auto mag by looking at Etergo AppScooter's pricing.

IMO That's mostly a PR.
Ola actually acquired a European E scooter company Etergo , and it's that platform they are using in mass production.
here is the image of their scooter, and 2nd image is a comparison in design.

Since they are producing in millions, how about if I park one in my home and use it when I want.

I think this model will fail Dilip Bam's cylinder test (The unassailable Dilip Bam! EDIT - Rest in peace!).

This is one electric scooter I can rally behind. What a looker!
I like it better than Ather. If they price it at 1L~ I will be genuinely interested.

Very well said , this is the need of the times for India. Bravo Ola !
After reading about news of this 2-wheeler factory I have almost stopped using Uber and now use only Ola cabs. It is money well spent !

Wish Ola the best success in this effort , and they also come out with small and affordable 4-wheelers that may disrupt even bigger markets.
