APACHE Vs PULSAR

Wish we could get the breakup for TVS APACHE'S numbers from SIAM. Here we get all the variants (160/180/200) are clubbed as one since they all fall in the (150-200 cc) category.

As for the Bajaj Pulsar we get Pulsar 125 (100-125 cc), Pulsar 150 (150-200 cc), Pulsar 180/ Pulsar 200 (150-200 cc) and Pulsar 220 (200-250 cc) numbers separately. Since as per the SIAM categorization, the variants fall in different engine capacities.

Bajaj Dominar: Combined (250+400) 1,600 odd numbers are a disappointment considering the monthly target of 10,000 as mentioned at launch back in 2017.

RE 650 Twins: Monthly numbers have come down below its average of 1000 units since the last 2 months.

RE Meteor: Touched 10k numbers since its launch

RE Himalayan: Expected more than its current monthly average of 2000 units

Honda H'ness 350: Decent numbers of average (3000-4000) monthly units since its launch

Hero Splendor: numbers are mind boggling considering its essentially the same model launched Quarter of a Century back.

Harley Davidson: Limping at 20 units per month. Discontinuation of the Street 750 range and the much public closing of its Indian subsidiary + substantial loss of its previous dealer network is hurting

First time I came across two wheeler sales thread on the forum. Thanks for sharing. Few comments:

- Looking at the market share, it’s still Hero-Honda ruling the market
- Bajaj being fourth in terms of market share comes across as a big surprise. Especially what I see on the road. Maybe because rural vs urban market-share
- Not a single EV in top 20 if I read this correctly. My guess for the next couple of years is - EVs will capture a higher market share in 2 wheeler segment as compared to four wheeler segment with a few names popping up in top 20
- I am not a big fan of Hero products, but what this company pulls off every month is commendable. They know the market for 2 wheelers just like Maruti understands it for 4 wheelers

That's because Bajaj sells only MOTORCYCLES and misses out on Scooters and Mopeds numbers, something that the other three also make apart from Motorcycles.

Thanks for sharing the monthly dispatches chart once again a4anurag. Would it be possible for us to see the actual percentage split of each company' sales? A pie chart for each separate manufacturer with model name, volume and percentage split would be perfect. I know its a lot more one time effort, but if it can be added, that would be great. An alternate solution would be to just add one more column in each manufacturers table, with percentage split by model for each row? That might be easier.

I really like that you split each manufacturer's dispatches into their own separate table. That makes this a lot easier to read .

A few thoughts

1. Bajaj
- The near 50% increase in Platina dispatches takes them back up after 3 months of low numbers. Can anyone figure out a reason for this spike? Was there a new Platina launch or update?
- Between the Husky 250 twins and the Dominar 250, Bajaj dispatched just 1,214 units.
- I dont think the Dominar 400 can be resuscitated. Its just going to go along and add 1,000 units a month.
- Bajaj should stop dilly dallying and just launch the Pulsar 250 and Pulsar 400. They have nothing to lose.
- Whatever analysts say about their zero debt and incredible vision of their leaders, some day someone is going to write a successful case study on How Bajaj lost its mojo.

2. Harley Davidson
- Who ordered 12 Fat Boys at a time when the company has shut shop in India? No, seriously. I am genuinely asking who placed an order for 12 Fat Boys? Was it some group buy or a corporate order or something?

3. Hero
- The good news is that dispatches are back up after 3 months.
- The bad news is that the Xpulse bikes are floundering.

4. Honda
- A good month for the CB350 with all time high dispatches. The expansion in sales outlets is definitely helping them.
- It seems to be following the same path as Hero. The premium performance / commuter motorcycles are just not doing that well. The XBlade and Hornet combination is not resulting in major sales.
- Only 10 CB650 twins does seem low. These will likely be display units. After the hammering that Honda took on the 650 thread for the pricing, it will be interesting to see how they actually sell.
- The Africa Twin is doing steady numbers considering its Rs 20L price point.

5. Kawasaki
- The lack of the Ninja 300 is impacting Kawasaki's success.
- The popular Z650, Z900 and Ninja 1000 dropped to nearly half their previous months numbers. I wonder what could be the case.
- Next month we will see dispatches of the new ZX10R display and customer bikes. So the numbers should be better.

6. KTM
- Good month for the Duke 250. It did better than the two Husky 250s and the Dominar 250 combined. Im guessing it is just a push to fill dealer inventory and not really matched to a sudden spurt in demand.

7. Royal Enfield
- Im happy to see the Meteor cross the magical 10K mark. Its a really good motorcycle. The Hunter 350 should help steal some sales of the CB350.
- Low dispatches of the 650 twins are likely because of the switchover in paint schemes and discontinuation of several older ones. In a couple of months it should be back to normal.

8. Triumph
- No dispatches for the very popular Street Twin, niche Street Scrambler, halo product Street Triple RS and popular Bonnie T120 in 2021. That says it all.
- Between the Trident, Rocket III and Tiger 900, somehow they are chugging along. I am genuinely surprised by the numbers that the Rocket III is doing. But I suspect that the party wont last for too long.

Adding to what Neil has mentioned, i do see Suzuki Vstrom 650XT no sales for last one year. I doubt this as i am 200% sure Bangalore 2 outlets have sold atleast 15-20 bikes after the BS6 launch.

These are WHOESALE numbers and NOT RETAIL numbers.

Most likely the units sold by the Bangalore dealer would be from old stocks.

By comparing the PROFIT & LOSS Statements of the companies,

Bajaj Auto's annual Net Profit is nearly: TWICE that of Hero Moto, EIGHT Times of TVS and FOUR Times that of EICHER Motors

rk_sans, great catch. That completely slipped my attention. The Suzuki numbers do not seem right for sure.

payeng, the BS6 version was launched in India in November of 2020. There is no way that the dealer sold these Euro 5 / BS6 bikes with zero dispatches from the factory. Link to the Autocar India news of the launch.

On Bajaj, I dont disagree with their numbers. Its very commendable. And Im sure the financial results will continue to power them for several more years.

But its also lulled them into complacency for the last 5 years. Maybe more? They bought a stake a KTM which was very forward thinking for sure. But what about their own brands? Everything is diluted with their Lego approach of mixing and matching engines and paint schemes. You cant take a step back from moving forward in technology or cutting edge development just because money is rolling in today. This is not a sustainable business model in the long run.

As per news reports BSVI V-strom was launched in Nov 2020. This certainly is missing data or Suzuki has not released data in public domain.

This is not a sustainable business model in the long run.

We are not clearly the target customers for Brands like Bajaj/TVS/Hero. These companies have their own battles among a different customer base.

We have moved beyond commuter bikes. Much like the way we have grown up and moved away from xBhp.

Agree. I think the two biggest What Ifs with Bajaj are
1. What if they continued to be the R&D juggernaut that they were in the early to late 2000s?
2. What if they never acquired KTM?

The pace at which Bajaj was developing the initial Pulsar generations and the rapid technical improvements in such a short span of time was phenomenal. DTSi was something else! We lived through that era. Bajaj redefined the performance segment for a whole generation of bikers.

Bajaj didnt need to lose customers like us. In my mind, had Bajaj not taken their foot off the R&D gas in say 2010, they could have been the kings of the global middleweight segment today.
