Yamaha R/World releases video teaser of upcoming YZF-R7. Edit: Now unveiled

Yamaha Europe has released a new video, which is believed to be the first teaser for the brand's upcoming YZF-R7 sports bike.

Yamaha R/World releases video teaser of upcoming YZF-R7. Edit: Now unveiled-yamahar7teaser.jpg

The teaser video doesn't mention any name, nor does it showcase a motorcycle of any kind. However, towards the end of the teaser, the sound of a smooth-revving twin-cylinder engine can be heard. This exhaust note is said to be similar to that of the MT-07, whose engine could be used in the upcoming R7.

The Yamaha YZF-R7 has been rumoured to be in the works for a while now. The new middleweight motorcycle is said to be a replacement for the road-going R6, which was discontinued last year due to an update in emission regulations.

However, Yamaha is yet to officially confirm anything about the YZF-R7 at this point.

It's a parallel twin. I hope they keep the vibrations down. Think they're trying to create a dual use street & track bike. Don't think it's going to be more powerful than the outgoing 600cc. Thoughts?

With the advent of the Aprilia RS660, the way of the classical supersport bike seems to be fading and it is now less committed ergos, fused with a more easily manufacturable and package-able power unit and some cool LEDs that are rising to prominence in this segment. It is being seen more as an offering within the company to those who already own a 300cc machine from the brand and are looking to upgrade, rather than an offering for the enthusiasts. Sadly it seems like the days of pure supersport machines like the R6, 600rr, F3 and Daytona, are numbered.

Aprilia RS 660 came to my mind too, as to what this bike is going after. I agree with your other thought too, this might not be a proper super sport. If this would have had the MT-09 triple engine, then the story could have been different though. That is quite a tasty prospect.

As the others have suggested, it will likely be a faired but comfortable version of the new 689 cc MT-07. The Yamaha R6 isnt going to be converted to Euro 5 due to the numbers not making sense and will only be available for track use. So there is a gaping hole in Yamaha's R product lineup and the R7 will likely fill its place.

First leaked image. Looks sharp except for the indicators. Opinions could be divided though.

That is a sweet looking thing. This could be the design language for the new R1 (whenever it comes). I just hope they plonk an MT-09 triple in this and make a new bike. That should have the right ingredients for a good sports bike.

Motorcycle Consumer News (MCN) magazine praised the said engine as ‘remarkable for its smoothness’.

As a general yardstick number of cylinders don’t decide peak horse power. If cubic capacity is uniform then a NA ‘twin’ will mak the same peak horse power that of a NA 3 or 4 cylinder will make (give or take about 3 to 4%). It’s only a matter of when in the power curve it will make the said power.

Looks sharp and different from the Yamaha sports bikes. Gives a KTM vibe somewhere (centre lamp), or maybe it could be just me. Anyways this looks like a nice machine and hope is hits our market soon.

R7 looks rather sharp and subtle styling trickled down from R1 unlike the latest Kawasaki ZX10r. Kawasaki designers should take a cue from Yamaha.

Yamaha Europe just released the video of the YZF-R7. Looks super sharp and leaked images stand true.

From the video, it seems Yamaha went the RS-660 route by relaxing the rider position. Will definitely bring slightly more takers than the R6 which honestly, had just become a poster dream for many for the lack of low-end grunt and non-availability in India.
As the MT-07 takes pride in its low-end grunt and torque surge from the 2-pot motor, R7 will be a highly effective motorbike on the streets. If Yamaha ever feels like rewarding India for the sky-rocketing sales number for the R15/FZs/Fascinos (LOL) by launching a mid-segment bike, R7 would be a great start for all the aspiring rider looking forward to upgrade from an R15/KTM RCs.

US website reveals pricing - $8,999/-

This is closer to a Ninja 650 at $7599/- than the Aprilia RS660 at $11,499/-

Shows in power figures too -

As per Bennett's Social -

The 2022 R7 is powered by Yamaha’s 689cc, liquid-cooled, in-line twin CP2 engine from the MT-07. Features include forged aluminum pistons and direct-plated cylinders to lighten the weight while simultaneously increasing strength. Additionally, the 270-degree crank creates an uneven firing sequence for a sound and feel that sets it apart.

Suspension consists of an inverted 41mm KYB fork, which is fully adjustable. A forged aluminum lower triple clamp and a gravity-cast aluminum upper triple clamp hold it together up front. The horizontally-mounted rear linked-type Monocross single shock has adjustable preload and rebound, as well. It’s mounted to the crankcase for those all-important mass centralization purposes.

Brakes- Brembo radial brake master cylinder paired up with 4-piston radially-mounted Brembo front brake calipers while the rotors up front are 298mm.

Other niceties include a full LED display up front, as well as LED lighting all around. There is, of course, the design language that looks fast even while it’s standing still. It sounds like a cliché, a bit, but it’s not—it’s a very good-looking bike, designed to draw the eye around it as smoothly as it flows through the wind. It’s as different stylistically from the MT-07 as a bike could get, and it’s good for siblings to have different personalities.
