Yamaha developing an electric scooter for India

The electric scooter segment has grown substantially ever since the government introduced subsidies and other sops. Following the success of Ather Energy, large players like Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors have entered the fray. Now, Yamaha too is drawing plans to enter the EV space.

According to a media report, Yamaha is working on an all-new electric 2-wheeler platform for India and the global markets. But, before it could commit to introducing its first e-scooter in India, the company wants to see how India's EV policy evolves.

Yamaha had showcased the E01 e-scooter concept at the 2019 Toyota Motor Show. In the same year, the company launched the EC-05 electric scooter in Taiwan. It comes with removable batteries that offer a maximum range of around 100 km.

Yamaha is also gearing up to launch its first hybrid scooters in the Indian market. The Fascino 125 FI Hybrid and the Ray ZR Hybrid will be launched later this year.

Re: Yamaha developing an electric scooter for India

This is good news. We need more high performance scooters in the electric segment. There are only a handful in India right now and none of them are from large volume manufacturers. I hope they launch something like the EC-05 with a few configurations. https://www.e-scooter.co/yamaha-ec-05/

India's EV policy is one of the best in the world, especially for 2 wheelers. The central govt reduced the GST on EVs (all types of EVs) to just 5% compared to 28% to 50% on petrol/diesel vehicles. Also, the central govt is providing a subsidy of Rs 15,000 kWh battery capacity. In addition, many state governments are waiving off the road tax and some are even providing additional subsidies over the Central govt's subsidy under FAME II. With all these changes, electric 2 wheelers should cost the same as petrol scooters if they aim for decent volumes.

Traditional automakers are stubborn and want to milk the revenue from the same old petrol models as long as possible. Bajaj and TVS introduced a single model in early 2020 but those are still available in only 2 or 3 cities. They continue to say there is strong demand for their EVs but there is no wider availability. The less said the better about the likes of Hero, Honda, Yamaha, etc...

Re: Yamaha developing an electric scooter for India

IMHO, I feel unless manufacturers give e-scooters a minimum range of 200 km on road or give the provision of level 3 DC fast charging at every 10 km in cities, the e-scooter craze will not see the traction it deserves. When I went to test ride the Ather 450X, my only gripe was the 100 km range. A bare minimum range of 200 km would bring e-scooters very close to their ICE counterparts and encourage more customers to opt for the latter.

Yamaha Neo’s based electric scooter planned for India

Yamaha India is said to be developing an electric scooter based on the Neo’s which is sold in the international market.

Last month, Yamaha showcased two electric scooters at a dealer event. The conference was aimed at gauging the reaction of the dealer partners. It is said that the dealers weren’t too impressed with the specs of the Neo’s and E01 offered globally.

That being said, the Neo’s is one of the front-running designs, which is expected to be adopted for the Indian market. The Indian version is also likely to get a more powerful motor and a larger battery.

Yamaha has also confirmed that the Neo’s based e-scooter will be jointly developed by its Indian and Japanese teams. The scooter will be manufactured in India using components sourced from local vendors.

Re: Yamaha developing an electric scooter for India

Knowing Yamaha, the tech would be robust and very reliable, the performance and the general depth of engineering would be A grade but the marketing and showroom experience will be lacklustre, if they can somehow multiply their marketing budget by manifolds and inject some sort of enthusiasm in their showrooms, I'am sure they can become one of the major players in the EV sectors, god knows how much we need the reliability and stability in EVs these days.
