Swiggy commits to 800,000 EV km per day by 2025

Swiggy has added electric vehicles (EVs) to its delivery fleet. The company recently announced the commencement of trials, with the aim to cover deliveries spanning 8,00,000 km per day through EVs by 2025.

Swiggy has signed an agreement with Reliance BP Mobility Limited (RBML) to build an EV ecosystem and battery-swapping stations for its delivery partners across the country. The company has also partnered with e-cycle maker Hero Lectro and UK-based Fast Despatch Logistics for end-to-end delivery of Swiggy orders through cargo e-cycles. The company expects the use of EVs to lower running costs by up to 40%.

RBML will install battery swapping stations every few kilometers. A single pre-charged battery is said to offer a range of 65-80 km.

The trails are currently running in Bangalore, New Delhi and Hyderabad.

Apart from reduction in CO2, this move to EVs will result in reduced incidents of rash driving.

Given the current levels of low power (& limited top speed) in most of the cheaper EV 2-wheelers, delivery persons will now be forced to drive at sane speeds.

Disclaimer:
Not all EVs are slow.
Not all Delivery Persons drive fast.

I am not holding my breath nor am I excited. I fully expect them to drive at slow speeds....in the middle of the road, totally ignoring the traffic piling up behind them.

They could even market green kilometers apart from only EV KMs since I am seeing an increasing number of Swiggy delivery agents operating within shorter delivery radius using regular pedaled bi-cycles.

Its a good move when other companies like Amazon are also working towards greener deliveries beyond just the last mile lap.

I believe all deliveries and Taxis within cities will be using EVs by 2025. Already all of my Dominos pizza & Big Basket deliveries are with EVs. The taxi industry lacks proper EVs, once we have a tigor kind of car with 40kwh battery at 11lakhs, the industry will change to EVs within 2 years. This itself will bring lots of charging infra in cities.

TIL Swiggy has its own fleet. Always thought it is the delivery partner's personal vehicle being used.
