Yamaha is said to have temporarily discontinued its MT-15 streetfighter motorcycle in the Indian market. As per reports, the company is expected to introduce a newer version of the motorcycle soon, featuring plenty of updates.

Some of the new updates include the addition of upside-down front forks, dual-channel ABS, traction control and maybe even a quick-shifter. The 2022 MT-15 could also feature a new instrument cluster with Bluetooth connectivity.



While the overall design of the 2022 MT-15 is expected to remain unchanged, it will receive subtle updates, along with new body graphics and colour schemes.

Powering the 2022 Yamaha MT-15 will be the same 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, which also powers the fully-faired YZF R15 V4.0. The engine produces 18.1 BHP @ 10,000 rpm and 14.2 Nm @ 7,500 rpm and is paired with a 6-speed gearbox.

Yamaha is yet to announce the launch dates for the 2022 MT-15 motorcycle, although, it is expected to arrive in the market sometime in April. Once launched, the 2022 Yamaha MT-15 will rival the likes of the Suzuki Gixxer 155, KTM Duke 200 and the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V.

2022 Yamaha MT-15 is all set to debut on 11th or 12th April. Unofficial bookings are underway for a refundable token amount of Rs 1,000.

Existing MT-15 looked like they designed a whole new headlamp cluster but forgot to include the headlamp so then haphazardly attached an AUX light and called it a day. Silly. Hope for 2022 the actual headlamp finds a respectable place to live.

Edit: apparently not going to happen.

I know most conversations related to the R15 and MT15 will be related to price, will try to avoid that. But this looks like an even better brilliant little pocket rocket for city usage. Will be interesting to see if people prefer this or the now expanded 250cc range of bikes. I for one would definitely be in favour of the Pulsar 250s, especially given that the N250 actually looks a bit like the MT!

The MT's light weight and extremely agile handling characteristics should appeal to a lot of city slickers. That black with anodized gold USD forks looks a bit like a mini Cosmic Black BMW G310R. Cyan looks sharp too, as does the time-tested white fluoro vermillion.

If R15 sales figures relative to the 250 brigade are anything to go by, the premium pricing doesn't matter and folks will buy it for its snazzy appeal.

Thanks Venkatesh for sharing the details. After reading the above "still single channel", I thought you were wrong as most of the auto websites were claiming dual channel ABS. But when I saw it on official Yamaha website for MT15, you were indeed right. When Yamaha had given such advanced features like USD, traction control, Assist & Slipper clutch, I am shocked & frustrated why did they skip the dual channel ABS, just to knock off few thousand rupees from the ex-showroom price.

I was really looking forward to this launch - but the lack of dual channel abs has put me off. It would have been the perfect city bike otherwise - R15 engine and mechanicals in a much more comfortable riding package and agreeable fuel economy. And, there is only one dealer in the whole of Navi Mumbai and zero blue square dealers - surely someone in Yamaha must be wondering why they don't sell well.

Yamaha has indeed majorly lost its way in India. We may berate cousin Honda was overpricing their premium offerings but at least they are being offered! If memory serves me right, the R1 and MT10 was among the earliest premium motorcycles available in India and every motorhead kid or teen had a poster on their wall. We even got the VMax.

For some reason, the success of the R15 and FZ15 seems to have Yamaha put all their eggs in that segment and entirely neglect the premium market. One can only wait!

If you are riding in city you don't really need the power 250 cc bikes can generate at higher revvs. As it is you are barely able to get out of 2nd-3rd gear in those bikes. Additionally you get a far better mileage in a 150 CC bike than a 250 CC one and these days that matters quite a lot. And a premium bike, even if smaller engine, will always sell more among the crowd that are buying these bikes. If not 300 CC bikes Yamaha should at least try to sell XSR 155 here.
