Folks, is anyone facing rusting on their fuel inlet? Any solution to the same?

It shouldn't be rusting as easily. The inlet is covered with the cap and then by the tank lid. The bike is Jan 2023 made, so it's not even that old. Not flooded yet, but it has been driven in the rain and parked under it, too (as one normally does).

Havent faced it. But for any rusting I use a loctite Marine compound, and that fixes it

New day, new Aerox mod.

I was getting bummed looking at how dirty the scooter gets in monsoon, on even small 2 min grocery runs. Just take the bike out, and it would look like I haven't cleaned it (especially the rear near the tyre) in ages even though it gets washed practically daily. The big culprit was Mumbai rains, of course, but also the lack of a proper mudguard/tyre hugger. It just needs a little bit of rain for the entire back section to get caked with dirt, including the KTC suspension that I would very much like to show off as much as I can
And on the days I have to be the pillion on the scooter, I would also get a little bit of dirt splash on my clothes.

Here's what the Aerox looks like normally. This was freshly washed and then taken for a grocery run when it wasn't raining.

If there was more rain, it would be significantly dirtier. I figured I would get a tyre hugger.

So I got the Yamaha "stock" tyre hugger from hypertourer. Cost ₹1900 for the part, + ₹450 shipping to Mumbai + ₹415 fitting from V Mirai (Yamaha authorized workshop) = ₹2765.

This was after a one-hour highway run. It wasn't actively raining, but there were lots of puddles.

The tyre hugger came out fairly expensive for what it is, but now it takes a lot more to dirty the bike's rear. It also takes away from the chunky tyre look, but that is a compromise I have to make to avoid getting my clothes unnecessarily dirty from stray splashbacks.

I would consider this as an optional mod for Aerox.

Here are the changes I have made to my Aerox:
  1. KTC Racing Extreme suspensions (changing stock suspensions is highly recommended change, can choose cheaper alternatives)
  2. Stiffer side stand spring (very cheap upgrade that is highly recommended that would save you a lot of money on unnecessary panel replacements
  3. Side stand shoe (skippable, doesn't do much)
  4. Grocery hook in the front (discretionary, depending on needs)
  5. Tyre hugger (optional/discretionary)
  6. Tank pad sticker (cosmetic)
  7. Tyre rim stickers (cosmetic)

Stuff I will add over the months:
  1. Bigger disc for front brake to improve stopping power at higher speeds
  2. A bit more comfortable seat. Not a sofa, but not this wooden plank either. Something in the middle.
  3. Handle bar ends: Damaged the earlier ones when bike fell off side stand. Yamaha workshop doesn't have it in stock, so will probably get some aftermarket good ones.
  4. Underseat partitions: Helps a little with organizing
  5. Better mirrors
  6. Replacement for left side front panel and rear air filter cover: Damaged both when bike fell off side stand. Will replace after monsoon.

~750km, ~12 hour, Trivandrum-> Bangalore Ride



An update on my Aerox after a long time, so hoping to start with a good one.

As some of you may have noticed, I had the Aerox up for sale with just around ~2400kms on the odo. The scooter was purchased primarily for wife and to be used in Kerala, but when she also relocated to Bangalore post the Covid WFH scenario - the Aerox got left behind. Initially she was of the opinion that she needed a more conventional scooter for her needs in Bangalore - and hence the Aerox was put up for sale. Takeaway: I got a lesson in the "bro" culture. Thankfully she reconsidered soon enough and decided to try out the Aerox for a few months!

Instead our old workhorse - the Hero Maestro will be put up for sale. It has done ~44000kms in ~14 years of ownership.

Now that the Aerox needed to be shifted to Bangalore. One of my most favourite ride/drive is from Bangalore to my hometown in Trivandrum. ~750kms one way, taking around 12 hours - I have done this route a lot many times in both my cars - at least two dozen times with the Punto and half a dozen times with the Jeep. On two wheels - I have done three round trips with the Versys 650 and one with the Tiger Sport 660. But then - a 68hp/80hp tourer is a whole different ballgame and I never had I attempted this route on anything like an Aerox.

And now the chance presented itself nicely and so I grabbed it. Started by 5:10am from home and reached the house in Bangalore by 5:25pm.

Likes:


+ Good mile munching ability. Can sit at 100 kmph all day long.
+ Excellent stability (for a scooter) at highway speeds
+ Refinement at high rpms. (8000-8500 rpm feels so natural to hold)
+ VVT does make a difference and is enjoyable to push towards higher rpms.
+ The Aerox is still a novelty - lot of questions at petrol bunks and from other motorists.
+ Seats cushioning and ergonomics were good. No fatigue even after a 12 hour day. No pain at all with the seat - surprised as even the Tiger Sport 660 left me with some pain two weeks back.

Dislikes:


- Tank range is undoubtedly the biggest pain point. 100kms of useable range means you will be looking to fuel in almost every major town.
- Fuel Efficiency drops drastically once VVT range. Trying to cruise at a constant 100 km/h - this ride returned 28.1 km/l on the console.
- Rear suspension is still extremely bouncy over anything but good roads - thankfully Tamil Nadu has excellent highways end to end, connectivity Kerala with Karnataka.
- Throttle action caused a lot of pain towards the end of the day. Cruise control may be too much to expect, but will try to get an aftermarket palm grip for the throttle.
- Wind blast is constant as with any naked two-wheeler. Not sure if the accessory sports windscreen makes a difference.
- Runs out of steam quickly above 110 kmph, but then 110+ on a scooter is really pushing luck.
- Braking performance is ok, but the initial bite feel could really improve.

The Aerox is still a rarity that it sparts interesting conversations on the road, especially at fuel stops. I did not run into a single one for the entire ride today - thats sad. Anyways, the most interesting moment was near Krishnagiri where a gentleman on an Avenger 200 kept chasing me and finally stopped outside the fuel bunk where I was. He wanted to know which scooter and why he was unable to keep pace with his 200cc (his words! )! Also had a not-so-pleasant moment where I overtook a gang of Enfield riders and that seemed to have triggered them to overtake me in a closed formation and slow down intentionally!

Suspension change is inevitable - didn't miss it much today because of the smooth roads in TN, but I can't say the same about Bangalore roads. What really impresses though - it the rock solid stability (by scooter standards). Ride the Maestro back to back with the Aerox - and the former feels disconnected, wobbly and unrideable till you get adjusted to it.

What really impressed is the mile munching ability - the Aerox handled the highways like it was meant to be used this way. Except for the frequent fuel stops - I only got off the seat only thrice for these 750kms - once for breakfast, one bio break and one for lunch. Maintaining 100km/h all day long is easy and ergonomics don't cause issues either. I guess I will use it for the occasional breakfast rides, ones where the destination is less than 100kms distance from the startpoint, so others riding with me don't need to wait outside the fuel bunks.

Not much was done by way of preparations. I had to trickle charge the battery since the scooter was unused for a month, tyre pressure checked and the outer panels dusted. That's about it! I also removed the OEM seat cover which was installed. The stock seat looks much nicer -

Indicated FE of 28.1 km/l. Along with the 5.5L fuel tank, this certainly is the biggest pain point of the Aerox for touring. Pain point, not a deal breaker IMHO. Only 3.5L may be useable if you have range anxiety like I do - And I was looking for options every time the indicator came down from 6 bars to 2.

Ended up stopping for fuel at all the below towns -
1. Nagercoil
2. Tirunelveli
3. Kovilpatti
4. Madurai
5. Karur
6. Salem
7. Krishnagiri
8. Silk Board

Not a deal breaker because even with these fuel stops - it still managed to make the trip in good time. Plus fuel bunks are so common except in some regions - down south I don't think I would have had a problem even if I had decided to stick to just XP95 for the whole trip.

Nice chronicle of your ride. The Yamaha accessory sports windshield is pricey at 3000+, but I got it anyways. Extends a bit outwards with half inch bush. It's wider as well, so helps a bit. I have seen longer ones (imported from phillipines) in the fan clubs

Good read ! Ha ha ha,Your fuel stops almost read like yesteryears bus stops. I think you only missed Dindigul & Dharmapuri.
Did you carry a puncture kit? No punctures enroute I hope?
28 kmpl for a 155 cc seems low ; does the R15 also deliver similar mileage? The part about the gentleman astride his Avenger was funny ��, especially since he caught up at your fuel stop to enquire.

What a coincidence. I saw an Aerox (Grey) yesterday and was wondering whether this can do long distances. Now my doubts are cleared.

Even I think the mileage of 28 KMPL seems very low, may be riding 80 kph all day would have affected the mileage. Also, two major issues you shared

1. Hard ride quality
2. Small tank

There are after market solutions for the same. Watch this video:

Great write up and gald that you had a nice trip. I have also transitioned from a Mastero to Aerox. I can vouch for the stability. I had a couple of skid incidents with mastero, even at a moderate speed of 40-50 kmph and man, it was a rattle box. My father's 12 year old Activa used to have a smooth ride than my 3 year old mastero.

Aerox is a really fun to ride scooter now in market, with best of both worlds experience. It's sad that Yamaha is not bothered to market it properly. Only grouse is not getting enough time and opportunity to ride it and letting it gather gather dust in parking.

True.

Andipatti BPCL CoCo is very close to Dindigul and Dharmapuri is very close to Salem. The only other major towns I missed out is Namakkal and Hosur i guess!

Thanks. No I didnt carry a puncture kit. Skipped it for two reasons - 1. Inconvenient to carry it in flight and 2. My high powered portable compressor blows the fuse on the Aerox 12V socket.

Thanks. I was keeping the speedo between 100-105 kmph all through the four lanes. That means a constant 8000-8200rpm and VVT on, which really hurt the projected FE figures.

On two lane Kerala highways, with speeds around 60 kmph and no VVT triggered - i have managed 50kmpl+ on a 200km ride.

Nice review. How is your service experience in Kerala for Aerox? I am trying to get a test drive for Aerox, but not available in Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. They says they are selling 2-3 a month and all with bookings, so nothing available for test drive.

I just booked an Aerox! I have a few questions...
1. How did you fix the side stand stability issue?
2. Is the tyre hugger really necessary ? Is it that really bad when it rains?
3. Is Normal petrol enough ? Or does it require higher octane ones ?
4. Anyone tried Crash Guard ?

Quick and easy, do it right away to save yourself from avoidable damage on your new bike.

No, tyre hugger is optional. It does get dirty enough, but you can ignore it if you are on a tight budget. There are other upgrades (like the rear suspension) you should prioritize before the tyre hugger.

I use normal petrol. Have had no complaints.

Most people I have spoken to have suggested avoiding crash guard. The Aerox does not have good mounting points for a stable crash guard setup in a way where the guard actually does its job rather than be a deadweight addition. You don't want to mount the crash guard to the panels since any impact would rattle the panels.

Hey, had a couple of questions:

1) Can Aerox be serviced in Trivandrum city? I got to know that Shreya Motors in Attingal do, but no positive responses from dealers within the city.
2) Is fuel tank upgrade necessary? My commute will be 36km per day/ ~200 km per week min. If yes, what are best options and where can I source them from and will it be worth the investment?
