Re: The Kawasaki Ninja 400. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 4.69 lakhs

No idea why Kawasaki are re-introducing this heavily overpriced bike in India again after it was a sales dud last time around. The Euro 5 update has reduced the bhp slightly for the European market which means the bike is even less value compared to its BS4 avatar.

Highly doubt Kawasaki will price this competitively.

Re: The Kawasaki Ninja 400. EDIT: Launched at Rs. 4.69 lakhs

Best for Kawasaki is to retire 300, start the lineup with 400 and price it aggressively, they will get takers.

BMW anyway is busy with sticker and badge shifting in this segment. Triumph does not have any offering, no one cares about Benelli, it's kawasaki market to take.

Re: Kawasaki to reintroduce Ninja 400 in India on June 24, 2022

Relaunching the 400 only makes sense if they retire N300 and price N400 right (aggressively). I believe India is one of the very few markets where N300 is sold. They have already done a lot of cost cutting on it and are selling it with different paint schemes.

N300 is not a VFM proposition anymore considering other bikes that have entered the segment.

Re: Kawasaki to reintroduce Ninja 400 in India on June 24, 2022

If I remember correctly the old model was expensive because it had low levels of localisation - it was either a CKD or a CBU. Granted, the N300 is also a CKD bike but it has very high localisation levels.
Case in point: I ordered parts for my bike (ER-6n) from a Thailand dealer because the parts were cheaper there. The indicator on these bikes is shared. Once I got my parts from Thailand I found out that the indicator has a "Made in India" sticker on it!
So I ordered from Thailand and the indicator was shipped there and shipped back to India eventually.
If they can roll this out for the N400 I think we could see some killer competitiveness. Right now the price gap between the N400 and the Z/N650 is so small that most people plonk for the bigger bike.

Looks like the price is slated to remain same as the BS4 version when it was last sold. The official Kawasaki India website seems to expose prematurely the Ninja 400 product page. Hope this is indeed the actual price to be announced later today.

Re: Kawasaki to reintroduce Ninja 400 in India on June 24, 2022

Price officially announced: 4.99L for both colorways. Tried the on-road price estimator from the official website: 6.4L in Bengaluru. That's steep even considering today's increasing auto/moto prices.

This may serve as a sales booster for the Ninja 300 and even the Ninja 650 in the Kawasaki stable by sheer VFM propositions. But also, as an unintended consequence, the RC390 (and perhaps the upcoming BMW 310RR) will start to look very attractive to those considering faired motorcycles in this segment. Will Yamaha launch the R3?

Re: Kawasaki to reintroduce Ninja 400 in India on June 24, 2022

Well I was expected a price hike so it's surprising Kawasaki kept the old price. Though yes it's still pretty dead on arrival. However the gap between this and the Ninja 650 is much larger than before which does help the value quotient of this bike. There is not a huge performance gap between this and the Ninja 650 and since this uses more mainstream components like 110/70 and 150/60 tyres and single disc brake up front it means cost of ownership is a lot better than the Ninja 650.

Interesting you compare it with 650 but ignore the 300, which is 1.63 lacs cheaper then this at ex-showroom and should be around 2 lacs cheaper at on road price, 300 still churns out 39 bhp and 26 Nm torque. While Ninja 400 is at 45 Bhp with 37 nm torque. The real life performace won't be much, anyone looking to buy Ninja 400 would rather happily buy 300 then even go the 650 route. You say gap between 650 and 400 is not much when 650 is 65 BHP and 64NM torque which is pretty decent, in addition has the fancier speedometer with bluetoot too.

In all real sense, gap between 300 and 400 is not much, and hence this will again be a dud.

The Ninja 300 has a lot more flaws. First off it's a localized product so fit and finish are not on par with the imported Ninja 400. Secondly the MRF tyres of the Ninja 300 are pretty bad. The Dunlops of the 400 while not excellent are still a big step up from the MRF rubber.

Thirdly the Ninja 300 brakes are not as good as the 400 which are very decent. Fourthly the Ninja 400 is the only Ninja that has 140mm of ground clearance. The 300, 650 and 1000 all have 130mm of ground clearance which is not good for Indian roads. If you put an aftermarket exhaust on the Ninja 400 you will probably never touch any speedbreaker anywhere ever again.

Then there are smaller things to consider like the dated ninja 300 instrument cluster which is lifted from a 2012 ninja 650 and lacks a gear position indicator.

The Ninja 650 does have a lot more power but the real difference is the torque spread. The power advantage of the Ninja 650 is reduced by the almost 30 kg difference in weight. That's affects the handling as the Ninja 400 being a lot lighter has sharper handling than the 650.

I have ridden my Z650 and a ninja 400 Bs4 back to back and honestly I could barely tell the difference in performance when riding flat out. Only the power band was a lot narrower on the Ninja 400 which is a factor as I simply love the torque spread of the 650cc motor more than riding it flat out given our unsafe roads aren't condusive for high speeds.

Lastly if you trick the Ninja 400 out with a full system exhaust and an ecu flash you can get a blisteringly fast almost 4 second time to 100 kph and a 200+ kph top speed which is what the Ninja 650 can achieve with a exhaust upgrade thanks to the weight advantage of the 400

A good 55k difference in On-road price between Chennai and Bangalore.

Probably for the extra price, they should have given an Akropovic exhaust as standard.
Would have definitely vouched for it if that was the case.

All said and done, it is still one of the most accessible twin-cylinder motorcycle in the country.

Which led me to think about twin-cylinder bikes sold in India (under 7 lakhs).

Note - Not considered bikes like Benelli & CFMoto.
