Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

Yamaha RX100 may hit roads in a new avatar, launch possible only after 2026.

Chairman Chihana says,

Quote:
“We want to bring back the RX100 brand but there are two points — RX100 is two-stroke engine and complying BS6 engine in it is impossible now. But, certainly giving the name to a new model is in our plan. Having said that, once we put the RX100 on a brand/some aspiring model ... the reincarnation with modern styling/ flavour, is a big challenge,”
Quote:
When asked about a possible launch time, Chihana said it could be possible only after 2026, as the company has other models lined up till 2025. “We have a plan, but we should not use RX100 name so easily ... it will ruin the image. RX100 cannot be a quick plan/decision ... it should be an impactful package with powerful engine and design,” Chihana added.

May be Yamaha got tempted by the success of CB350 H'ness and want to do similar with RX100 nameplate ?

With the kind of popularity the RX100/RX135 has, they could just bring a similar looking retro-styled commuter bike, but of course a 4-stroker.

There have been speculations of the XSR155, but that looks to have shape of a H'ness/similar, but a much smaller engine. A combination that wont hit the spot

It’s impossible to give rebirth to the legend in four stroke form. Yamaha probably looks to capitalize on the name “RX100” just like the present Jawa and Yezdi by Mahindra.
Gone are two stroke days.

Having enjoyed ownership of three RX 100’s in the late 80’s (launched in 1986) and 90’s, really hope they don’t come up with something that insults the memory of this fabulous and amazing baby.

Fingers crossed they do justice to the iconic name or shelve this plan forever.

Cheers

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

Ah the RX100! Takes me down memory lane.
There was a moment in time, when Hero Honda, TVS Suzuki and RX100 had taken India by storm.

The first one was known for the unbelievable milage.
The second one for it's almost silent engine.
But the girls, they definitely dug dudes with RX100.

I have lots of fond memories, where I begged, bribed and almost threatened one of my college buddies to lend me his RX so I could take a certain special lady out on our first date. We had planned for a movie, but there were unexpected showers and we ended up roaming around getting drenched followed up my numerous cups of coffee.
Good times. Really good times.

If the RX100 is really revived, I am going to get myself one, just for old times sake.

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

Yamaha, please don't.
RX100, RX135 or the RXZ screams 2 stroke. That sound was a music in our college days. Without even looking, we could sense a RX approaching from it's sound. Please do not kill this with a 4 stroke! I still have fond memories of a blue RXZ which I used extensively during my 1st and 2nd year of my college days. Unintentional wheelies were a part of our life then!

Let the legend rest in peace! Reintroducing a 4 stroke RX100 will do nothing, but dilute the RX100 image! I being selfish enough, I do not want today's college kids to showoff with a 4 stroke Yamaha RX100!
Rather give us the R3!

Am still that old school guy, who imagines a 1.6L NA sedan on hearing the name Baleno!

If it doesn't "rin rin RINN RINNNNN", it shouldn't be named any kind of RX. Ex owners would know that sound.
I waited for the next RX when the four stroke invasion happened, and Yamaha gave us the Crux.
What are they going to do this time around?

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

Yamaha can try to bring the old name back to cash in on the humongous cult following that the RX100 enjoyed but truth be told, nothing can bring back the joy of riding the old two stroke bike- period. The lucky folks who had the good fortune or should I say old enough to get a feel of the RX100 would know.

Today’s generation will never know what it felt like riding a Yamaha RX100 or a Kawasaki KB100 or even a Suzuki Samurai for that matter although I know a certain fellow BHPian Boniver whose recent attempt to ride to Calcutta from Bangalore is now part of the folklore and who owns two of these beauties and who is hell bent on collecting these beauties as his treasured possessions. Can’t fault him at all, once someone gets used to the free revving two strokes, there is little not to fall in love.

Agree with Samba above that Yamaha would do well to not bring the moniker back and tinker with the everlasting memories that someone has over the years during the fag end of the last millennium. Some things are better left alone, but then sentiments don’t hold much where the moolah is involved !!

P.S: Adding a picture of Boniver’s pride from our recent breakfast meet, not a Yamaha though but what the heck anyways. I am sure he will definitely post the pictures of his gorgeous RX100 here.

I can’t imagine anyone tinkering with these designs of the glorious two stroke days !

Respected Yamaha top brass,

Please don't listen to guys with MBAs in Marketing and play with iconic brands like RX 100 or the RD 350. They are iconic for a reason, and they command a lot of respect. Please do not take that dignity away from these classics by naming 4 strokes or Electrics after them!

Sincerely,
A classic lover who has grown up listening to and drooling over those wonderful machines!

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

Looks like the kids at Yamaha India have not heard that Petrol will cease to be used in India after by 2027. And if they want to bring in after 2026, the future is un-certain.

Jokes apart,
Even Tata using the Safari name for the 2021 version was kind of killing the brand name. Yamaha re-using RX in anything can be made the preface of a book called "how to kill an iconic brand"

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

The Once Iconic Brand Name Doesn't Matter.. what matters is how relevant is the Product in Todays Times.

Eg: Once Iconic Brand but Flopped in its second avatar
  • ZEN ESTILO
  • SANTRO
  • SUMO GRANDE
  • CHETAK 4S
  • BOXER

On the other hand we also have examples of brands that became super hit in its second innings
  • BALENO (the hatch that is a super hit unlike its earlier Sedan Namesake)
  • VITARA BREZZA (The Sub 4m SUV has been a hit unlike its bigger SUV Namesake)

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

What's the plan with launch in 2026? Doesn't really make any sense. The current millennials don't even know that the RX100 even existed. Although I got to see it in my school days, doesn't ring any bells now. All the brands that people think are iconic hardly get re-launched. Even if they do get, the response is very lukewarm. There are tons of examples out there. Jawa, Santro, Zen etc. Apart from the Bullet, which obviously was in tune to the market, none of the relaunches have had moderate success. The RX100 will be no exception.

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

As an RX Fanboy, I would say that this is a step in the right direction but Yamaha, Please do thorough research before you start developing anything or travel across Southern India and you will see the craze for these iconic 2 strokes.

Cosmetically it should be a modern-day replica of RX100/135(Like new Jawa's resemble a lot like old Jawa's). Mechanically, We don't want anything based on the FZ platform. In my limited knowledge and today's date, I would say BS3 Duke 200 would be a true successor to RX100 if we are comparing the character of the motorcycles.

Re: Yamaha hints RX100 revival. The iconic brand could return post 2026

During my childhood Yamaha RX100 was my dreambike. My father promised me to gift RX100 if I get admission in a good/reputed professional college after class 12th..
But when the time came to buy one, Yamaha RX100 was a past and Pulsar/CBZ era had started. So I could never get RX100.

An RX100 in the year 2026 will not sound as it used to do in Two-Stroke era.
May be Yamaha will bring Electric RX100 with sound option of original RX100.
(The kind of four sound options available on Revolt Electric bike where a rider can select a sound and bike will play that).
