Ather Energy is likely to introduce a low-cost version of the 450X e-scooter. According to a recent trademark filing, the new variant could be called '450S'.

Details of the Ather 450S are scarce. However, we can expect a slightly stripped-down variant with fewer features. The 450S might do away with functionalities like auto hold and riding modes.

Besides, Ather might also reduce the size of the battery to bring down the price tag in order to compete with the likes of the Ola S1 Air and TVS iQube.

At present, Ather offers 450X at a price tag of Rs 98,183 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Customers can opt for the Pro Pack for an additional Rs 30,000. The 450S is likely to have an even lower price tag.

Are they also trying to do the Model 'S' '3' 'X' 'Y', with the 450S .. 450X like Tesla ?

I think this was inevitable. To me personally, the way I'd look at an EV scoot would be how does the price compare with an ICE scoot. Even as someone who greatly admires what Ather has done, and I think it's clearly the best escooter in the Indian market today, at the end of the day, it's just a scooter, I'm buying it to commute, not for the excitement. So IMHO, it's not required for it to be a cutting edge 2-wheeler, so I really don't care for all the extra bells and whistles. Just need a reliable (so all the Chinese re-brands are out, and going by the bugs, so is Ola) scooter for city commuting to replace the likes of the Activa. So price and range are all that matters. I'd happily go for a lower priced Ather.

The ather 450X without the pro pack is not supported(at least officialy) at their own public chargers. With what confidence would you take an electric scooter knowing that if you run out of juice, it could take hours for a decent range to be added at a public charger.

This is a LONG OVERDUE decision!
What were you doing Ather, does Ola have to motivate you for this, couldn't you have thought it out yourself?

This will likely be a master move if they could capitalise on these points:-

1. Keep multiple batteries option, 2 or 3, but sell with single battery initially. I don't mind a 40 kms range for a small city commute. People can buy more batteries later, if they need.

2. Get rid of that spy console, just get a basic one which doesn't phone home all the time. You might not believe me, but when that ola owner who claimed the ola crashed by itself, was told by the CEO, that data from the scooter shows it was ridden over a speed breaker at high speeds... this did shock people who realised the machine is spying on their use.
This eco model is a good chance to get privacy conscious owners on the bandwagon. Software update is not needed as Ather already has sufficient data from existing models.

3. A basic stripped down home charger is sufficient for the lowest model.

4. A reasonably powerful hub mounted motor to save costs would be good.

5. Aim for 60 kmph max, no more.

Ather Energy has teased the 450S, price starts at 1.30 lakh.

- 3kWh battery pack

- 115km IDC range

- Top speed at 90kph

- Bookings open in July

Is there any chance that they will introduce a new platform? All these models essentially are a tweak of the original 450 introduced in 2018. We really want to upgrade as our 450 with 55 km of range is not sufficient for our current needs but I’m terrified that I’ll buy the 450x and they will introduce a much more advanced model next year

Its good to see the new instrument cluster.
I hope its totally free of SIM/ network/ spy features, as is normally the case in most 2 wheelers.

Requesting more clarity, as its not clear what kind of change you're expecting.

In a Petrol vehicle, a new platform means a new engine, often constituting a new block and crankcase. So, what exactly constitutes a "new platform" in an e vehicle?
If you mean a technological upgrade, I think rapid advancements are unlikely within such short span of time.

If you're concerned about range, then an entirely new platform (including all components) is not needed I guess. All you need is either a bigger battery or a less powerful, smaller motor... so which of these would you prefer?

Unless you're clear, I guess the Ather marketing team will also not be able to take the message forward (although I doubt they'll read random TBHP comments, now that they're pretty much a big business).

I see your point, I guess in the near timeframe, the technology is not going to have a huge leap from the current situation. So, even if they introduce a new scooter, it will have similar performance and maybe rely on the design to provide a different user experience.

Though the range of the current 450 is the biggest pain point for me, it is something that I am able to live with for my needs. I think I will wait for what they introduce next as well as what the other players introduce before I change it.

Ather 450S will be unveiled on August 11.
