I was told when I went to take delivery of the bike that preload adjustment will not change the height of the seat - if that's what you're trying to do. I haven't had any occasion to change the preload adjustment anyway.
Thanks for the reply, yes I have also been told the same that it's not for height adjustment. Running on default setting and finding it good. Going to go on a short ride to Wai before this year ends.

Was it just a stall, somewhere in 1st of 2nd gear, at low speed riding? And after that, you started and went ahead like nothing happened? Asking as I have been having this stalling issue since long. I have mentioned here on the thread too few times. Bike just stalls for no reason, mostly at lower speeds and in 1st or 2nd gear. It is a bit scary at times as once it stalled when a truck was following me closely. Luckily I pressed the clutch, thumbed the starter and moved on, while the bike was still in motion after stalling. Stalling at mid turn could lead to lost balance and a fall.

I have tried different fuel from different bunks including the expensive shell but without any luck. Earlier bike use to stall averaging once a day but recently the bike is started stalling much frequerntly. So much that I thought to check and clean the air filter last sunday. Post watching some videos on youtube, it felt like a fairly simple job to reach and have a look at the air filter.

Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review-01.jpg
That is the view post opening the right side panel. Panel is fairly simple to open, once screw at the top and two rubber mounted push lugs and a hook at the bottom. It is important to see some videos before attempting as the panel had to be pulled out from the top area, and lifted from the bottom area to get it off the bike. Else one may end up damaging the panel.

Open this screw to get the electricals off the way.

Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review-03.jpg
Open the 4 bolts to release the plate securing the air filter and intake hose.

Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review-04.jpg
The plate removed.

Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review-05.jpg
That is the airfilter visible inside.

Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review-06.jpg
Pulled the paper element filter out and the inside was very dirty. Bike is run about 7K+ kms.

Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review-07.jpg
Outside area of the filter was as clean as a new one, which shows the filter doing its job well.

Tried cleaning inside of the air filter, although the dirt accumulated was a bit oily and stuck hard the surface making it difficult to clean. In retrospect, It is better to replace the filter than try and clean it.

Once done, put it all back together but the entire effort did not help the cause at all. The bike continues to stall just like how it did earlier. At 1st service, the ECU firmware was updated. Wonder if there is water in the fuel, or if the injectors are clogged, or the spark plug is not upto mark and needs replacement. Will given the bike to service station and ask them to try and catch the issue, although I am not too convinced with their diagonistic skill set.

Another update:

From the front end of the bike, I was getting some KAT - KAT sound, especially while going over sharp bump. Later, I could feel the steering cone is loose. After some convincing, got the steering come tightened at the service station and the sounds is vanished. So thats one issue well resolved.

It is more serious than stalling for me. The bike stops and shows me red engine oil light. I think I might be in lower gears only (maybe 2nd or 3rd). But then the bike doesn't just start on the next attempt. It takes 3-4 times and a few key turns to start the bike. Either my oil is low (but the level looks okay to me) or there might be some ECU issue that I do not understand. I just hope my engine doesn't seize as that red light freaks me out. My 2nd service is due in 1.5 months. I am thinking of getting it done this week itself.

How is the bike's cold start performance?

It seems like the typical issue plaguing high-compression bikes. This is due to bad quality fuel in India. The solution is throttle body cleaning or using fuel injector cleaners by the likes of Liqui Moly, Arbo, etc.

Here is my experience on the same issue:

If it's not the throttle body issue then get your clutch switch changed. I am assuming Bajaj is repeating the same mistake they did with KTM 390 ADV. There was a batch in between with a worse design clutch switch leading to frequent stalling.

Cold start is just fine. Fires up instantly on the first crank. Holds idle well. Usually I let it idle and warm up for a while everymorning.

The stalling does not follow heat related pattern. It can stall even after 10 mins into a ride or even after hours of riding when the bike is super hot. This happens only at slower speeds, mostly in 2nd gear. The bike just dies, as if there was not enough fuel going in. Air filter cleaning has not helped at all. Not sure if there is vacuum lock in the fuel tank. Or some ECU related issue.

I have never tried injector cleaners. Are they safe for any bike? Maybe can give it a try and for some time use premium fuel like V power. Do this and check if its any better. I was also planning to get a mini service done, as the service interval set by the company is 16,000 kms which is too long a gap for our Indian riding conditions. replace the air filter, check the plugs, if possible, change the engine oil too. Bike is done about 7k+ kms which is decent mileage for a mini service.

Will FuelX help? It enables better fuelling.

Are you pulling in the clutch just before the bike dies?

Yup, they are. But it should be used on a need basis or for cleaning only and should not be added every time like fuel additives.

It might. But the bike should not be stalling in the first place.

Re: Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review

I suspect there is a fueling issue with this engine. All that Triumph has done to fix it is program the ECU to rev it up when it detects uneven firing at idling revs. However, it does not work all the time and results in a sudden engine cutout - not even sputtering to give you a warning to flick the accelerator.

Triumph should have fixed it in the hardware.

We would have to make sure if its the fueling issue to begin with or something else. Have not come across anyone with FuelX on the 400 in my circle to get a comparative feedback. 10k is a bit expensive to just give it try.

This is a realistic possibility. Most of the time, the bike stalls at lower speed, for example while approaching a speed breaker in 2nd or 1st gear. This required pulling in of clutch.

Even the initial lot BS4 BMW310GS had the stalling issue at low revs. BMW made changes to the ECU and increased the rev to counter the stalling issue. It did help but one could smell the rich mixture, specially during cold start.

I wonder what could be the underlying issue, as I ride many other bikes in similar style without facing this issue.

Well, I started to face the stalling issue lately (a couple of months ago)...

Recently I visited the service center for a busted fork oil seal, and then SVC also updated the ECU to the latest version, which fixed my stalling issue.

My stalling issue used to be in specific cases—like it used to stall when I was riding downhill and was shifting from 2nd to 1st with minimum revs; that's when the bike used to stall.

Although the latest update fixed it almost 99% (since the new update faced stalling issues a couple of times)

Re: Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review

It seems like all the posts I make here are about the stalling issue. Early this morning, as I was coasting to a stop with the clutch pulled in at a signal, the engine stalled in 4th gear. I tried to restart it by releasing the clutch, as I had enough momentum. However the slipper clutch got engaged (I think) and didn't pump the engine. There was no knocking - just a smooth deceleration.

I had suspected this would happen, although I hadn't tried it earlier. The only way to restart is by using the starter button.

This has happened with me only once at a very low speed while I was waiting for a turn in last 3 weeks at 1st Gear. It hasn't happened to me anytime after this incident.

Weird. I like how the bike rides at low speed even at higher gear.

Waiting for 1st Service which will be due in 15 days. The bike is nibble once you sit on it and responds perfectly to acceleration and brakes progressively.

Re: Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review

Hi, how much oil does this motor needs? Surprisingly i did not get any user manual, nor a soft copy so i am clueless about the capacity and grade. One triumph SVC in Delhi only recommends HP Lube . I want to change it to shell or motul !

Also anyone have any clues about fitment of spools on this?

I too was surprised that we didn't get user manual but I downloaded the same. It requires 2L of engine oil as per manual of 10W-50 grade.

Take your time and read the same in peace.

I got my bike back in February 2024, and it was running perfectly fine until the past couple of months. Suddenly, it started stalling a lot, and I think it’s because I went on a ride and couldn’t find XP95, so I had to fill it with regular petrol. I usually stick to XP95, and the stalling only seems to happen when I use regular petrol. It’s super rare for it to stall with XP95.
