Re: Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review

Hello everyone, recently i noticed a paint chip off in the engine case just above the front sprocket area. I took it up with the ASC where the guy said that the cover will be replaced under warranty and that i have to handover the bike once they inform. My doubt is whether it's wise to go for a cover replacement for this at this stage ? My odo stands at 18.8k kms in 12 months of ownership. Please share your suggestions.

Re: Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review

Guys - Need your feedback and situation check on mileage of Scrambler 400x. I feel its very low but not sure if all of you are in same boat or not. Or is this an initial thing and mileage will improve to somewhere around 22-24 kmpl after some more kms (read somewhere that it improves after 3rd service).

My riding conditions:
My daily office commute is Del-Gurugram (20 kms one way) with loads of traffic for 40% of the distance. The traffic situation is so bad that while returning from Gurugram, it takes me 30 mins to cover first 8-9 kms. So my average riding time is 1 hr 30 mins to cover approx. 40 kms in a day.

Mileage I am getting:
I am getting approx. 18 kmpl. So far I have covered 1500 kms on the ODO. 1st service was done at 800 kms.

The other question I have is on the fuel tank capacity. Recently I ran out of fuel (luckily it was right outside the pump as I was heading there only) but when I got tank full done with auto-cut, the total volume that was filled was 10.9 litres. As the fuel tank capacity is 13 litres, I am wondering where's the rest of 2 litres fuel hidden

Even I have noticed that the mileage differs drastically over different riding conditions. In heavy traffic, it drops down to 19-20 kmpl. On highway and at sane riding speeds, it goes upto around 28-30 kmpl. The average which I get in Bangalore traffic is around 23-24 kmpl, riding mostly in 2nd and 3rd gear. So yes, traffic and riding conditions greatly affect the mileage, much more than other bikes in my observation.

I always do a tank-full and set the trip meter to 0 and that is how I keep a count of the average. Once I almost ran out of fuel and the amount of fuel that went into the tank was 12.9 Lts.

You should do a tank full and go for a long ride on a highway. Cover close to 300 kms and check the average. That may give you a fair idea if its traffic or something else. Also get the bike checked once as at times some other factors may affect the mileage too. Things like a dirty air filter, wrong tyre pressure, brake pads alignment, tyre alignment, injector etc.

And there should be no reason for average to improve after 2nd or 3rd service, under normal scheme of things. Nothing susbtantial.

Re: Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review

CHAIN SLACK ADJUSTMENT:

My chain and sprocket set on 400X was gone in 13.5k kms. Typical signs were excessive slack when pulled out on rear-sprocket with a clear gap between chain and sprocket, and uneven wear where one part of the chain was loose and the other half was very tight. There were audible grinding noises from the chain and lubing did not help either. All classic symptoms of a chain set that was dead. This is the least mileage I have got from a chain sprocket kit on any of my bikes. On asking around on whatsapp groups, I found that many others have had to replace the chain sprocket set at under 12-13k kms. Once rider even got it changed at 8k kms.

Last Saturday, I got the chain sprocket kit replaced. The kit costs only around Rs 2600 but they charge labour of around 1050 Rs, which I feel is on the higher side for a standard job.

I noticed that the new chain had a slack of 25mm. On further probe, I found that the chain slack recommended for Scrambler 400X is 40-45 mm and for Speed 400 is 20-25mm. Now 20-30 is the chain slack recommended on most bikes so that is sort of industry default. That could be the reason the service center folks are maintainiing the scrambler 400X slack also at around 25mm. I feel this could be one important factor for the chain sprocket kit dying pre-mature death.

It seems the old Triumph 400 manual did not clearly mention the adjustment details, but then new one captures them clearly. So somewhere, this small but crucial point was overlooked in the manual as well, adding to the confusion.

25mm slack as maintained on the new chain kit from the service center. I have increased the slack now to 40mm by myself. Will ride some and see how it goes. As of now, it feels just fine with 40mm slack.

Lake Hopping on 400X

Due to peak summer, it is difficult to venture out on two wheels. Couple of recent spells of rain around Bangalore meant some respite from the heat and also some cloud cover from the harsh sun. We need any excuse to ride around so a quick plan was brewed to explore some trails and waterbodies between Ramnagara and Kanakpura.

The mango season is in full swing and the entire belt is lined with juicy mangoes trees. There was a sweet and tangy fragrance hanging in the environment, mixed with high himidity due to the recent rain. A typical seasonal nostalgic feel taking us back to the childhood.

There were plenty of puddles and small waterbodies around small hills and quarries.

We tried climbing this interesting steps up-hill. We managed to go some distance with the monentum only to relaise the terrain was very slippery and the bike started skidding down even with full brake. Not a pleasant situation to be in, but we managed to get out of it without much damage.

Some nice and fresh green was a welcome sight especially after last few months of dry grasslands and ochre landscape.

Local mud quarry filled with water from the recent rain. The mud is used to make bricks in the nearby klin factory.

Another grassland with water, a treat for the eye and lush fodder for the cattle.

A large lake with a hilly backdrop. The shore was sandy and fun to ride and hone some off-roading skills. Reason being falling on that soft surface would not hurt much.

Catchment area on one side with a bund on the open side to hold water. A typical of most of the waterbodies found around karnakata.

Came across this very scenic lake with fresh green grass. This is just on the outskirts of a state forest and secluded. Not easy to access as the trail leading to the place gets narrow in patches.

All in all, a well deserved brake, literally and figuratively. Enjoying the green carpet.

Seriously, with what I've seen you do on the regular Scrambler, the XC isn't even worth it IMO.

Re: Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review

I love the Scrambler 400X. Timeless classic design in a modern avatar executed beautifully. And the sound! A soothing symphony on the open highways!

If I hadn't made it my mission to participate in the iconic KTM Adventure Tours, I would certainly have bought this bike instead of my 390 Adv!

Someday!
