Re: Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 Review

A small recap of my sudden ride from Jaipur to Bhubaneswar. Due to some exigency, I had to ride home and of course, chose the Himalayan 450 as my ride. Just out of first service she was all set. I had already installed the rally protection kit, radiator guard & all-important aux light (more on it later). Also installed my Givi top box in a hurry.

Started from Jaipur at 5.30 am with the temperature hovering at about 7-8 degrees. My RE waterproof gloves tried their best to fight the cold but my fingers were still freezing (missed the Barkbusters for the wind protection - the same gloves in Spiti and leg rides were fine). The Rynox Storm Evo jacket and trousers along with thermal inners were kind of OK, but a wind cheater would have been welcome.
All through the day till Katni, the temperature remained below 10 degrees.

Now coming to the bike - it performed flawlessly. As already brought out by everyone, there is nothing below 3-3,500 rpm in lower gears (read all gears other than 1st), but cross 4-4,500 and voila, she changes character! Absolute fun - overtaking is a breeze.
Another observation - don't bother to use 6th gear below 4,500 rpm or below 80 km/h. The bike becomes almost dead.

The best part undeniably & without question is the suspension. Bad broken patches of roads are like non-existent. When every other vehicle slows down, this thing simply flies without a care in the world. Simply awesome! Buy this bike just for the suspension if nothing else.

Now coming to the light. The stock light is crap unless you are alone on a totally dark road, which is not possible in the real world.

I have installed a Baja Squadron Pro light with 4 levels of intensity control set at 20%, 40%, 70% & 100% respectively. 10% is the default & comes on every time the bike is started. The rest can be selected as required. In the thick early morning fog, they were my saviours (not using any yellow filter or else they would be more effective). Unlike other aux lights, there was a clearly focused beam from the top two LEDS and a wide swathe of light from the lower two LEDS illuminating from close to the bike to about 150-250 m ahead where I could see even a dog moving at the farthest. I would say paisa vasool.

Now my other bike and Thar both have Maddog Alpha installed. While Alphas are equally bright where they lose out is beam focus, while Baja simply excels. Another factor is the light's colour temperature. At 5600-5700 Kelvin, Maddog is more vibrant, while Baja at 5000 Kelvin is more soothing to the eyes as well as better in smoke/dust/light fog.

The stock horn was very feeble. So I installed Denali Soundbomb Mini horns and they were excellent at dissipating traffic when used - some perverse pleasure. One must use them responsibly. They are insanely loud & confusing.

The stock windscreen, while good till about 80-90 km/h, is almost of no use at higher speeds. It also allows a lot of insects to hit on the visor. I feel a taller windscreen will be better.

For luggage, I am using my Rynox stormproof duffle bag (5-year-old) with 2 Decathlon bungee cords in tied criss-cross pattern and it is holding great. The top box is empty less my spare gloves, water bottle and cleaning cloth. I need to install a pannier rack so that I get the Dirtsack Core 30 panniers.

Yes, the tank range is consistently 400-430 km however you ride. The best and worst tank-to-tank mileage in 5 refills I have got is 33.4 km/l to 28.1 km/l.

Overall, I am super happy with the purchase. Serves my purpose of a touring bike to a tee.

Finally a snap with the best makeup one can give the Himalayan:

I see that RE has battery-powered 'heated gloves' at the company outlet now, I found it interesting

For some reason, the mechanic said mine is already upto date. RE has a long way to go when it comes to software basics.

The service folks don't know what's the latest firmware version and the app has no logs for when was the last update. So there is no way to figure out if you have the latest version or not. And this option to.see your firmware version number is buried deep in the app and needs a zillion clicks. See attached pic.

Thankfully, the wifi code still appears unlike in some.ownership threads where ownwrs reported it disappeared post firmware update.

Post service on the ride back home, felt that the gearshifts are hard and not smooth as before. You can almost hear a click unlike earlier when it would just glide into a gear. Firm but no click kind of feeling. Will take it back in a couple of days to get it checked. Got to hit 5k rpm only once today but it didn't feel any more vibey than at 4k. Will see how it behaves on a longer ride.

Service cost was Rs.1447 and got the engine gaurd for 4750. That 10% accessory discount code was useless since there was nothing else available and the code needs a purchase of atleast 10k.

Re: Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 Review

Thanks. A bit disappointing to see the slow rollout of the accessories. Hope the supply improves soon!
On that note, just recently I saw some Zana accessories for the Him450 on Instagram. Seemed okay in the pics. Not sure about the actual quality.

Anyone has any update/idea about any possible timeline for the launch of the tubeless rims?
I have kept on postponing my booking because of that.

Have regularly been enquiring with RE dealers in Pune, but they have no idea.

00.53 is the latest firmware version. It can be easily updated from the Royal enfield app. It took me like 7-8 minutes. And yes after the update I am not able to see the bike Id

Thanks much! Tried it - for some reason, the update option didn't work. It seems it's not enabled on my app.

Do.you know what's been.improved in 0.53?

The only change I noticed is earlier the trip details and navigation were visible when we change the screen mode by long pressing the M button. Now we can see all that information on the bottom section of the screen much clearly than earlier. It's more like a minimized view with the same data and options.

The steps I followed to update was, switch on the ignition of the bike, then on the Royalenfield app click on navigate, then click on connect, under manage devices click on the three dots and select Infotainment settings. In the menu beside the Software update there was Update Now button. Once you click on it the update started.

Re: Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 Review

Test rode this newly launced machine today. The all new Himalayan 452. The suspension, gear shift and ride quality are super smooth and very comfy to say the least. Its way better and very different than any other RE. Loved it. The built quality, performance, maneuverability in traffic, rock solid stability on highways, high speed acceleration, capability to absorb (just like a seasoned offroader) any kind of road surface it encounters are just beyond my thoughts. Hats of to RE for been able to make such a quality global product.

Few snaps from the test ride.Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 Review-img_3379.jpeg

The app shows a different firmware version for me after updating it yesterday. Presumably this may be the latest version yet.

It took about 15 minutes for the update to complete. After the update, Check Engine Light stayed on and didn't disappear. It did not appear again today morning.

Does anyone know how to reset the service due indicator ?

Completed the 500km service and the 'Service Due' indicator was overlooked. Typical RE service.
Tried to reset it manually seeing below video but didnt work for me, maybe due to updated firmware. Perhaps it may work before the update.

Re: Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 Review

Request to @Owners (1500km+), just checking, have you noticed any changes in engine noise characteristics? I have seen couple of YT reviews staring some tappet noise is coming after 1000+kms and also seeing this is the case for almost all royal Enfield bikes. Some YT reviewers mentioned con set issue, which Sagar Sheldeker clarified in the youtube video that it's related to some nut/bolt loose issue. Any other major issues noticed?

Question by a prospective buyer on waiting list.

Although I'm not an owner of the 450 but the bike that I had taken a test ride on had some weird engine noise. At first I thought it was normal, but on searching on the net I noticed many users complaining about it. It was a weird noise, it's hard to describe it exactly but it felt like it had generally a poor build quality (engine), even though my on hand feeling of the bike felt that it was generally well built (tft, clutch, handle, switches etc).

Thank you. But I am tending to neglect test ride bikes because of possibility of people trying to violate it every possible way. Not sure if we can expect realistic engine feedback after improper run in driving in test ride bikes.

Re: Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 Review

Having owned the bike for a week now, after riding mostly in city traffic and a bit of highways for 200 odd km, its absolutely fine. The only downside is the lack of torque below 3k rpm, which makes riding in the city in 2nd gear a bit of a hassle.

Otherwise its an amazing, modern offering from RE and I am loving it (Ive also ridden the 411 which was pretty nice as well, low peak power being the only downside). The 452 is a HUGE step forward for RE and in turn for Himalayan 452 owners.
