Re: Honda NX500 launched at 5.9 lakhs

I'd enquired with the Big Wing dealer in OMR, Chennai, today about the NX500's E20 compatibility, or the lack thereof. He said that it is only E5 compliant.

That makes choosing this motorcycle seem like a bridge too far to cross, with it being a pretty distant bridge to start with, given its high on-road price. It's a 470 odd cc motorcycle (and a Honda at that), so its lure is self-explanatory. But - why wouldn't I go for a lesser E20 rated RE Scram 440 or a Himalayan 450? That's the question I asked myself today.

What's more confusing is that the E20 rating is stated to not be a silver bullet for all Ethanol issues. The way I understand it, Ethanol troubles are inevitable for all vehicles. That's the theory - but on the other hand, no mechanic I've ever met has yet had to fix a vehicle on account of this issue. This is at a time when members have begun reporting progressively higher levels of Ethanol (upto 12%, if I remember rightly) at fuel pumps across the country.

This is a real puzzle that the Government has imposed on us.

I had the same doubt and spoke with the service technician at Big Wing Goa and he mentioned that it is E10 compliant. The stickers to prove the same are pasted on the tank.

With ethanol blending up from 7-8 to 12% a 2% increase will affect the overall performance or not is to be seen in the long run.

But the Chennai dealer's statement that it is only E5 complaint is in my opinion incorrect.

Re: Honda NX500 launched at 5.9 lakhs

Let me share some updates. Odo stands at 4600km, had the first service, and completed a couple of longish trips, about 1000+km of round trips.

Let's start with the first service. Completed it in October with odo at 1100km. The total invoice amount was around 5700 INR including the fitment charges for the center stand and the radiator guard from Carbon Racing.

In December, went to Darjeeling from Kolkata. We had a group of 6 bikes - 4 Honda 350s (Hness, RS, CB350), one Triumph 400x and one NX500. We started on the 25th. Reached Tinchuley on the 26th and visited Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Lamahatta, Mirik and Sittong before returning to Kolkata on the 31st.
The NX performed flawlessly over the smooth highways and in the hills. Turning off the traction control helped with the climb.
I will let the photos do the talking:

the toys

And finally the reason for this trip, Mt. Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling

The total trip was around 1500KM and as per the trip meter, the mileage was around 27.5kmpl

After a foam wash and a chain lube, the NX was resting till the 23rd of January. On the 23rd, left for Bhubaneswar, visited Puri and Konark over the next couple of days and returned on the 26th. Pictures below:

This time, only two of us went, one friend decided to opt-out at the very last moment

Visited the Lingaraj temple, Dhauli shanti stupa and the Udaygiri and Khandagiri caves in Bhubaneswar

at Konark - built in the 13th century, the beautiful temple is partially ruined

Last but not the least, the Jagannath temple, Puri

The overall trip was about 1200km and the trip meter shows a healthy 30+ kpl - aided by fog and strict speed limits enforced in Orissa

Accessories added so far:
1. Honda OEM crash bars
2. Honda OEM charging socket
3. Moto Genius knuckle guards
4. FE Retrofit Edge 3R lights - sold the Maddog alphas and installed these
5. Motourenn adventure footpegs - these were not a direct fit and had to drill a bit to fit
6. Carbon Racing radiator guard
7. Carbon Racing center stand and
8. Carbon Racing side stand extender

Looking for a longer windshield, Givi has one but is around 10k. Probably install it later this year.

It’s actually unofficial knowledge that this can cope with e20 fuel, since it’s sold in Brazil too.
But as per government rules imported vehicles are not allowed to be changed in any manner hence they cannot add the sticker for e20 here.
Honda engines were ethanol compatible since long as they are sold in South American markets. In fact if you see the 3rd gen city it had a e10 sticker on the rear windshield.

The main issue with ethanol is moisture , once you have any tiny bit of water in the fuel it will cause the ethanol to separate from the petrol causing fueling issues. The fuel itself is higher octane rating, so I don’t think any combustion chamber deposits or issues.
With incompatible engines I think it will be mostly fuel lines and plastics that will leach due to corrosive nature of the fuel.

I had asked the regional service manager about this and was told that the bike is E20 compliant as it is being sold in Europe & other markets with the same specifications.
