Qargos electric scooter designed for last-mile delivery spied

Qargos, a Pune-based start-up, has developed what is claimed to be the world’s first electric cargo scooter. The company has now commenced road trials ahead of its market launch expected during the first half of this year.

The Qargos electric scooter has been designed specifically for last-mile delivery applications. It has been developed in collaboration with Dassault Systemes.

The USP of the Qargos e-scooter is its massive 225-litre cargo compartment, that sits between the front and rear wheels. It can carry around 120 kg of cargo. The company claims that the Qargos can carry around 70 parcels, whereas an average e-scooter can carry just 35. Its grocery carrying capacity is also said to be three times that of a standard 2-wheeler.

The Qargos e-scooter is powered by a 6.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, designed by Dassault Systemes and a 3.4 kW electric motor that generates a peak output of 6 kW. It can reach a top speed of 80 km/h.

The electric scooter can cover 150 km on a single charge. The battery can be charged in 5 hours and 15 minutes. The company also plans to develop a DC fast charging capability that is expected to reduce the charging time to around 3 hours.

Wow, an odd twist to scooter design principles. How will the chassis react to an empty cargo hold would be interesting to know.

It's interesting why we never saw ICE versions of such weird & wacky bikes & scooters. I wonder why EV manufacturers are coming up with such ideas.

- Petrol scooters are made by a handful of legacy brands. The management is usually happy with their product line-up and unlikely to approve radical design ideas that solve transport problems. The management is mostly focussed on growing the business traditional way (bigger engine size, more features, new markets etc)

- Two wheeler EVs are mostly startups, led by young fresh minds and backed by VC funding. They are more likely to conceptualize, approve & design unconventional vehicles like this. For them, this offers better risk reward tradeoff.

Glad this product has finally reached this stage. One of the founders, Vijay Praveen, is an old friend of mine. He used to run Silver Arrow - A Bangalore based Automotive customization shop of which I was a part of for a short period of time.

This product idea has been in his head for the last 16 yrs. Kudos to his conviction in his idea.

Qargos is Bangalore HQ'd with a design office in Pune. The company now has LOI's from many logistics firms and I hope it converts into orders.

Some more pix I received from him.

Re: Qargos electric scooter designed for last-mile delivery spied

This is very innovative.
Wonder if this will be comfortable to ride though because of the weight balance.

Their testing suggests it is.

Re: Qargos electric scooter designed for last-mile delivery spied

Why do they come up with such quirky designs? Anyway, pricing determines whether the product stays or leaves the market.

Here's one that I absolutely don't like; I do not see any safety for the rider, nor anything attractive, even the paint job is not up to the mark & feel there's anything good with engineering; tell me honestly do you even see anything other than box pipes?

Surprisingly this is well received with many grocery stores, atleast in Chennai & TN. Users claim that the bike has a load capacity over 200 Kg {tech spec says 300 Kg}

Now where have I seen such a design before?

Re: Qargos electric scooter designed for last-mile delivery spied

I'm worried about how it will accommodate parking spaces. It must be maneuvered similarly to an autorickshaw when parking to unload items. Given how companies make last mile transporters carry large gunny bags, this is a welcome move.

Re: Qargos electric scooter designed for last-mile delivery spied

I wonder how many takers will be there. Almost the entire last mile delivery/online order eco system employs part timers who do the deliveries by their own two wheelers. Which means they will use those two wheelers for normal commute as well as for social trips.

I can't see anyone using this for the last two purposes. This should be dedicatedly used for delivery purpose only.

Absolutely this is what the ground reality is.

The catch is, as per the law no private vehicle should be used for commercial activity of any kind. Either you should have a yellow board or black board (rental). The authorities and politicos are keeping a blind eye only because enforcing this in the 2-wheeler segment will create a huge backlash and genuinely affect economically weaker sections of the society.

I think eventually they'll ask big players (companies like Amazon) to provide vehicles like this for last-mile fulfillment. Needless to say, the MVD will create yellowboard registration with separate tax tier for such vehicles. Maybe the drivers (riders) too will be asked to take a top-up license with police clearance.

Just my 2c.

This vehicle looks like the Cargo Version of Dodge Tomahawk. Imagine the Tomahawk Engine Area as a Cargo area of this vehicle.

Re: Qargos electric scooter designed for last-mile delivery spied

A box over the rear seat like its used today will not hamper parking while this one does.

If its only for delivery wouldn't a 3 wheeler auto kind of vehicle be more practical. I wonder how difficult/easy it is for the rider with its weight. Powered Handle bar

Hi,
the video states a load capacity of 120kg. The rider appears to load 6 empty plastic boxes. Is this stability test done carrying the maximum load ?
Overall the contraption looks unstable and ungainly. The rider position looks uncomfortable for a long day's work. Imagine getting off if it when carrying 120kg load. Going to be tricky dismounting and keeping the vehicle upright while fumbling for the side stand. It's bad enough trying to put a standard 2 wheeler on the side stand with a 50kg pillion still on the seat !!! Now try it with a 120kg pillion seated.
Personally I think it should have 3 wheels like the Piaggio MP3, if you extend the frame and put the load box behind the rider. The 3 wheel format is much more stable and versatile and need not be much wider than a 2 wheel version. Maybe it would have a higher load capacity. The standard MP3 500, has a load capacity of 160kg allowing for fuel and an average weight rider.
