Honda has confirmed that its first electric scooter for the Indian market will debut in March 2025. Tsutsumu Otani, President, CEO and MD of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, recently revealed this while speaking to the media.



According to media reports, the production of Honda’s e-scooter is expected to commence in December this year. It will be manufactured at a dedicated assembly line for electric 2-wheelers set up at its Karnataka plant.

While technical details of the Honda electric scooter are not known, rumours suggest that it could be called Activa Electric. It will compete with the likes of the Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube and the Hero Vida V1. Besides the legacy brands, start-ups like Ola Electric and Ather Energy will also pose a tough challenge to Honda’s first e-scooter.

Honda’s first electric 2-wheeler for India to use LFP batteries

Honda plans to launch its first India-specific electric 2-wheeler next year. New details of what is said to be a mass-market scooter like the Activa have now been revealed.



As per the recently released Honda Report 2024, the brand’s first pure-electric offering for India will use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries. The current range of EVs from Honda utilise Nickel Cobalt Manganese cells. However, the company is working on LFP cells that will be offered on models launched from 2025 onwards.

Honda will introduce its next-gen batteries by the end of this decade. It is said that these next-gen battery packs will be more affordable and promote further adoption and expansion of EVs.

Honda plans to leverage its expertise in ICE vehicles to develop and efficiently market a variety of electric 2-wheelers. Modularization will be the key to achieving this. The bike maker plans to incorporate modular platforms and other innovations to reduce assembly line length by approximately 40%.

2024 marks the beginning of Honda’s global expansion plans for electric 2-wheelers, starting with the launch of a global model in Indonesia, followed by Japan and Europe. Honda has defined the period up to 2026 as the ‘market entry phase’, 2026-2030 will be the ‘business expansion phase’ and post-2030 will be the ‘full-scale business growth phase.’

I'd be more comfortable if it's a Chinese auto manufacturer embarking on adapting LFP for the two-wheeler market. Maybe, BYD? Yes!

Honda? No!

The truth remains that the Chinese dominate the battery electric vehicle market. I'm not yet aware of many LFP battery technologies in the two-wheeler domain.

I, for one, would love to sign up for one, provided the additional battery will be used to produce more power, and not merely extend the range.

I'm sure Honda isn't producing its EV scooter for the likes of me, who was never a fan of the Activa.

Time, I'm afraid, isn't on Honda's side. They need a sure-shot winner. And I don't know if they'll get the LFP tech will give them an upper hand.

Honda is gearing up to reveal its first pure electric 2-wheeler for the Indian market. The new model, which is expected to be an electric scooter, could be unveiled on November 27.



Honda’s first electric 2-wheeler for India is likely to be an electric version of the popular Activa. The company has already said that it plans to leverage its ICE platform to develop electric 2-wheelers.

The performance of the new electric scooter will be on par with the Activa 110. It is likely to use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, offering a range of around 100 km on a single charge.

The new e-scooter from Honda will compete with models like the Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube, Ather Rizta, and Ola S1.

My apartment doesnt allow electric vehicle charging. But I see that Honda is equipping every dealership with battery swap infrastructure, and (as luck has it) there is one, just a KM from my place. This is important for me, that Honda thought ahead and I will certainly buy this scooter.

This will be a game changer in 2-wheeler EVs for sure. No other brand commands respect like "Activa" does. Honda would be wise to name this as Activa EV.

Honda is a customer survey company, it will give only and only what the customer wants and nothing more, a classic example of this is the active. in the 15 odd years the scooter has been around there has been little to no innovation.

I would not be surprise if this EV from honda is a no nonsense scooter, giving good range and an sturdy engine period after all this is what the Indian ev motorist is looking for isn't it ?

So it seems there will be 2 products on offer, one based on existing activa platform and other based on CUV:e platform, and CUV:e being the more premium one with touchscreen, navigation and probably more range

As we are teased with more and more details, its quite clear that CUV:e based scooter is targeted at the Athers, Olas of the world and the Activa based scooter is targeting the Chinese Imports/Kits.

It remains to know which of these will have the swappable batteries or both will have the swappable batteries.

The plan/product seems promising all it remains to see is the pricing, it will make or break the product
