My 'Pre-loved' Suzuki Gixxer SF250 Review | Fulfilling my childhood dream

Hello all

As much as we all love cars, we have to agree at some point of life all boys have a strong desire to ride a motorcycle and I personally feel I'm not a complete man if I'm not owning and riding a motorcycle, movies like Dhoom and games like Road Rash only strengthened these feelings in my growing years!

For long enough time now buying and riding a motorcycle was in my bucket list of things although I could never give it a priority due to some reason or the other since my primary means of transport are my cars and scooters. However since past couple of years the itch to ride a motorcycle grew really strong and I couldn't resist myself from visiting showrooms and checking out some swanky new motorcycles.

Some of the motorcycles I did check out were as follows
  1. Kawasaki Ninja 300- Even though a dinosaur in terms of its age, the jewel of an engine Kawasaki has given to this bike makes this a very desirable and enjoyable machine to own and enjoy. The twin cylinder engine is creamy smooth and man when you open the throttle, you experience some real adrenaline rush, gearbox even though lacked slipper clutch was really nice to operate. Overall a very enjoyable package IMO. However the pricing was just too much and I didn't wanna spend so much for motorbike as of now and plan to directly upgrade to something like ZX6R when I'm experienced enough.

  2. Yamaha R15- This one wasn't planned as such, I had placed an order for some apparels(I somehow love collecting official apparels of different automotive brands), went to the showroom to collect my order, during the billing they had some issues with the server and asked me to wait upon which I asked for a TD of the R15 to kill some time. Sadly I didn't like the bike all that much, yes its very light but that highly committed posture wasn't to my liking, also even with the VVA tech, a 155cc can only excite you that much. Therefore decided R15 was not for me, collected my apparels and quietly left the showroom.

  3. TVS Apache RR310- I really appreciate what TVS is giving us at a reasonable pricing, the RR310 with its BTO package was very desirable to me, also really appreciated the fact that TVS provided Michelin Road5 tyres as OE fitment for their flagship bike. However upon some research I found that TVS service was a hit or miss and I didn't wanna gamble as I'm not having experience of maintaining motorcycles. Therefore dropped it from the list.

  4. Hero Karizma XMR- This is one of the bikes which is really close to the hearts of those who grew up watching the legendary ad of Hrithik Roshan with the yellow Karizma, also Hero really touched hearts of people like us when they called him again for promotion of new Karizma in that terrific yellow shade. TBH I was really SOLD for the bike even before I saw it in flesh.

Therefore as soon as it hit the showroom I checked out the bike, I was rather impressed, yes its a completely different kind of bike as compared to its predecessor much like the new Tata Safari but I was fine with it, also I really appreciated the fact that Hero engineered a brand new 210cc liquid cooled DOHC engine with Slip&Assist clutch for the Karizma. However again like TVS the service is a big miss, I personally own a 2017 Duet scooter, the experience has been subpar, both with the quality of the vehicle and the service, in comparison my 2012 Honda Aviator is GEM of a scooter IMHO, I really love using it even today and maintain it meticulously as much as possible and its very much user friendly for my short commutes within the congested city. On the other hand Duet has not been that good, the engine is definitely inferior to the Honda's while the quality is also not that good, the service experience is also quite meh, also considering all the tech Karizma is packing I don't think the ASCs are competitive to maintain it, therefore with a heavy heart dropped it.

Apart from all the above mentioned bikes I checked some other bikes viz Harley X440, Honda CB300F etc too and as you can understand I didn't have a specific segment or body style which I had in my mind while choosing a motorcycle because honestly speaking, I just checked them out on the basis of whichever bikes I liked in terms of look irrespective of whether its a cruiser, naked or faired one and whether its a 150cc or 400cc. I just wanted something with 2 wheels that I could make of my own and fulfil my childhood desire of owning a motorcycle.

Therefore upon giving some deep thought I decided to go for a pre-owned route instead of new one because, firstly I would get an experience of a motorcycle, build experience of riding and maintaining one which would help me understand better when I upgrade to a higher capacity, more sophisticated machine and secondly, a lot less damage to my wallet since there a thousand things more important in life which one needs to spend upon.

While going through the pre-owned route I fixed upon my own set of non-negotiable rules, first the bike should not be more than a couple of years old, owned by a single owner only and preferably less than 10k kms clocked on its odo, plus the service history should be thorough and clean.

While there are infinite second hand dealers of both cars and bikes in my town, most of them I will raise my head and say, are fraudulent, for the lack of better words. They hide many a things, deceive you into believing they are selling you a genuine vehicle and its only when you take your machine home, you realise you've put your hands into a can of worms and upon complaining to the same very dealer who was once so polite to you suddenly becomes totally ignorant to you and show their true colours. Don't go by their Google reviews since most of them are made by them and their close circle only.

Still, after a lot of online research and in-person visits zeroed in upon a store which seemed genuine enough, was run by the owner singlehandedly, a nice chap and frank enough about everything.

He had some good collection of motorcycles too which matched with my criteria. Among all the bikes shortlisted two options, the Hero Karizma XMR and the Suzuki Gixxer SF250, both the bikes were MY2023 models, the Karizma was almost factory fresh with just 2000kms on odo while the Gixxer was a shade under 5000kms. Since I already mentioned the big disadvantage with the Karizma, selected the Gixxer, also the dealer himself said Suzukis are more in demand while Karizma is sitting idle with ZERO enquiries for it even after discounted prices.

Took a short TD of the bike, everything felt alright, at least according to my limited knowledge, just observed some debris on the chain, requested him to get the chain cleaned and lubricated, do some final touchups and make it ready. While conversing with him, the discussion quickly changed from bikes to cars as I mentioned I'm a BHPian.

Even though I paid the non-refundable token and despite the dealer's reassurance of 6months warranty I decided to get the bike checked thoroughly before going ahead and also get my hands on the service history report. For the former, I took help of Droom's Eco Bike Inspection service, I chose the premium package which costed just 300Rs incl. GST. Initially I didn't get any confirmation about the service except for my token number, also Droom's customer care number was defunct, and their WhatsApp support was useless. I thought I lost my money, disheartened, left a couple of mails to their customer care email ID and gave up.

In the meantime called up Suzuki ASC, shared the vehicle number, asked for the service history and credit where it's due they quickly sent me a PDF with the complete service report, which thankfully was clean and regularly carried out at the same ASC.

Later during the day, received a message from Droom conveying me about the date and time of inspection along with contact details of the technician. Called him up, explained the whole saga and sent him the location of the dealer, asked him to carry out the inspection in my absence and inform me about his opinion about the bike since I personally had some work commitments and won't be able witness the inspection to which he agreed. Subsequently, called up the dealer to inform him about my inspection request by a 3rd party independent mechanic via Droom to which he was totally cool, a big green signal IMO.

The mechanic reached the place on time, carried out the inspection and even took a TD of the bike. He informed me the bike was in absolutely perfect shape with aspects like engine oil, battery and exterior in excellent condition. I even got a thorough PDF report of the inspection soon and bike was rated a good 8/10 rating. A huge sigh of relief and IMO these kind of inspection services are totally justified of their nominal costs especially when its a question of parting with substantial amount of your hard earned cash.

In the following couple of days arranged the required cash, asked for some last bit of negotiation and closed the deal. I requested him to drop the bike to my residence as the showroom is located 20kms away and I wasn't confident of bringing the bike home myself navigating through the nasty traffic and worst of all, the bike has just a 3rd party insurance as of now though I will be applying for a zero dep policy ASAP.

The dealer to his credit, arranged a Porter cargo van which carefully packed, transported and dropped the bike safely to my residence, also he was kind enough to accompany himself with the cargo van and as a token gave the bike with a full tank gas!

Even though the day was very exhausting, I woke up very early next morning to just see the motorbike, and it still gave me chills that I FINALLY bought my own motorcycle!

Took it for rides multiple times throughout the day just to enjoy the machine and carried out a small puja during the evening.

While its too early to review since I myself feel incompetent as of now to judge a bike I intend to keep this thread active as I spend more time with it.

Still, have planned some upgrades in the following months
  1. Zero Dep Policy- As stated the bike has just a 3rd party policy now and since I'm a novice in motorcycling, things could go wrong and its better to be protected with a good nil dep policy, have shortlisted ICICI Lombard which has zero dep policy with good IDV and decent premium, will be applying in a couple of days.

  2. New Tyres- One good thing which I really appreciate of Suzuki is they have equipped the Gixxer with wide 110/150 section Radial tyres and not generic cross-ply nylon ones which means it opens a lot of options for me to get some high quality rubber. The stock MRFs even though seem to have good enough life left I'm not too sure about its braking and grip characteristics and I feel it would be prudent for me to get some richer rubbers which I intend do so in a couple of months. Have shortlisted the Michelin Road6 tyres, which are available on an order basis according to the most prominent Michelin dealer of the town and the Pirelli Diablo Rosso, both of these tyres are Z rated and I feel they'll be the best tyres I can get for my bike. Any BHPians having experience with these tyres can share their opinions about the same, will be highly appreciated.

Looking forward to lifetime memories as I enter into the world of 2 wheel motoring!

Some pictures of the bike, still can't believe I have finally owning a bike now!

Re: Fulfilling childhood dream:My 'Pre-loved' Suzuki Gixxer SF250

Congratulations on your purchase! Wishing you many enjoyable miles ahead.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about your experience.

Getting back to motorcycling is always a special moment. No matter how many swanky cars we own, riding a motorcycle on open roads offers a completely unique and exhilarating feeling.

Could you please share the price breakdown? I'm sure you must have compared to New Gixxer before finalizing.

And don't forget to post some more pictures.

I believe I know this used-bike dealer since I had enquired with him a few times when I was looking for a pre-owned KTM Adventure. However, I found his prices to be on the higher side. While narrowing down on a trusted dealer is a challenging task, buying directly from the owner is usually a better option. That said, it does come with the hassle of handling everything yourself. Nevertheless, it’s often the price you pay for peace of mind.

The new Gixxer SF250 Ride Connect Edition costs around 2.5L OTR, yes they're running some discounts of around 25,000 and you may get the bike overall for around 2.2L or so and I don't wanna share the actual final price but yeah the price was substantially lesser than that of a new bike which means the extra cash saved can be used for stuff like service, insurance, fuel and new tyres, also good pre owned bikes are much better to master your skills on, similar to learning cars and driving IMO.

Definitely! As I mentioned the more I spend time and take the bike out on the road will be clicking more photographs and keep this thread active. In fact, it would my first proper ownership thread on Team-BHP!

I agree, yes, his pricing is a bit on higher side but he guaranteed me about the bike being in perfect condition and even gave me a written commitment of a total refund if bike was found accidental as per company records, plus he did give me a 6months/1500kms warranty on engine and gearbox, also the pricing included RC Transfer costs and since he was a genuine guy and even allowed for the inspection process by Droom, I felt a good vibe with him and closed the deal without much thought.

Today I completed a short 30kms round trip across the town and here are my initial impressions of the bike:
  1. The bike feels big for a 250cc machine and especially the tank area makes you feel like you're riding a big bike. I really liked this.

  2. The engine sound is sweet but not very smooth like say a Honda CBR250R. There are some mild vibrations and and you feel it more when you open the throttle.

  3. The ergonomics are well sorted except for a slightly committed riding posture which I guess is normal since its a SF model in the first place but at no time the position makes you feel uncomfortable as compared to say a R15.

  4. The switchgear quality is good too and not flimsy like say modern day Activas and feel like they'll last the distance.

  5. The ORVMs are good but due to their shape offer a bit restricted view. I really love classic rectangular style mirrors which the CBR250R used to get and even Suzuki equips their flagship Hayabusa with rectangular mirrors only. Form over function I would say.

  6. Even though the engine is oil cooled, the heat management is well sorted. I rode the bike during the hot afternoon through heavy traffic and never found the bike to heat up to an extent which would make you uncomfortable and the oil cooling system is capable enough of handling the heat of 250cc engine though given a choice I would always prefer a liquid cooled engine like CBR 250R engine or Karizma's 210cc engine.

  7. The brakes are good if not great but I guess that's down to the tyres since these are 5000kms worn and MRFs aren't really the best in terms of grip, therefore would give a benefit of doubt to the Gixxer, also a question to the BHPians, which tyre should I prefer, I personally like the Michelin Road6 or Pirelli Diablo Rosso but have heard good thing about Metzelers too.

  8. The Suzuki Ride connect application is good enough and throws up some basic information like current odo reading, last parked location, navigation etc, also understandably it only works when the bike is turned on and phone is in proximity to the bike therefore don't expect it to work remotely like Blue link, also I found the connection, sync and overall UX is better in Android as compared to iOS.

  9. The headlights are decent enough with bright throw and nice pass function as compared to my scooters which use a dim halogen bulb.

  10. The mileage is also very good, even with a lot of idling the MID is showing a reading of 35kmpl or so, which is commendable for a 250cc engine. The bike is E20 Petrol friendly too and I guess normal 91RON petrol is good enough though I'm keen to try out Shell V Power once.

These are some of the very early impressions about the bike and as mentioned the more I spend time with the bike the more I'll keep the thread updated.

Since more pictures were requested, I've attached some with even more to come.

The front, the matte black shade looks stunning IMHO.

The Pirellis which cost a little less, personally interested in these, will reserve my judgement till I see the Michelins.

Re: My 'Pre-loved' Suzuki Gixxer SF250 Review | Fulfilling my childhood dream

Tony2298, congratulations on acquiring your Suzuki Gixxer SF250. It is a very capable and fun motorcycle that should keep you happy until you get that ZX6R.

As a fellow owner, I will chime in on the tires question. Honestly, the stock MRF tires are fine for most regular Indian users. Also, while a set of great tires will help improve a drive / ride experience, given that you are still new to motorcycling, throwing on the most expensive set of tires might be a waste of good money. Why dont you try riding with the MRFs for some time and then see if you really need to replace them? Even if you dont want to have MRFs on your motorcycle (a lot of enthusiasts arent keen on MRF tires) and feel that you must change the tires, then you should look at the TVS Protorq Extreme and the Apollo Alpha H1. They cost almost the same, give or take a few hundred rupees and are the go to choice for serious enthusiast riders. These are also half the cost of the imported choices. If money is no bar and you absolutely must have the best tires available, then get the Road 6.

Re: My 'Pre-loved' Suzuki Gixxer SF250 Review | Fulfilling my childhood dream

While the Suzuki Gixxer SF250 is indeed a very good choice, I won't trust any dealers in India. I have had experiences of buying motorbikes from dealers in Pune, where everything was perfect when we checked and took test rides. 2 weeks after the engine developed issues and required major work. This wasn't the only time, every time we got a motorbike from a dealer this was the case. I hope you got a good dealer who's promise actually means something as repairing this bike will be a nightmare.

As a fellow owner of an SF 250 a tyre upgrade really helps make the braking and leaving into corners a lot more confidence inspiring. I was able to get a set of Ceat SportRads for ~11k and they have been excellent so far.

Having said that, I totally agree with Neil here 🫡, there's only so much of an improvement you can expect with a tyre upgrade on a 26BHP bike. I would say it's not worth spending more than 13k for a set of tyres for on a 250.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal with used bikes. I hope my bike doesn't turn to be a melon and I'm able to use it for the purpose I bought it for, also I'm considering it to get it serviced from Suzuki ASC even though the dealer suggested he has poured fresh Motul oil into it so I can be doubly sure of the bike. As of now I've been regularly riding it for approx 10-12kms daily and touchwood everything feels normal. I hope it stays that way! Thanks for your insights!

Thank you Sir Neil for your valuable inputs, I read your extensive review you penned down about your Gixxer and I understood the reason why you're a DBHPian! The insights and experience of yours is truly commendable!

Thank you for guiding me on tyres' aspect and as per your advice would be sticking to the OE tyres only until they wear out and then change to Michelin Road6 since more than anything else I just wanna try out Michelin bike radial tyres because I've been using their car tyres and my experience with them is fantastic therefore keen to try out their 2 wheeler Radials too, also these retail much cheaper than both Pirelli and Metzelers making them an interesting proposition.

Thank you once again for your nice comments, this is what motivates me to deliver more to this forum regularly!

Thank you for your insights and as I already said I'm taking Sir Neil's advice on running the stock tyres till they wear out and then only go for upgrade.

I've heard good things about Apollo Alpha tyres and these are quite VFM too but as mentioned I really wanna try out some elite brands like Michelin since I'm very satisfied with their car tyres and want to experience their bike Radials too. Pirelli is also one of my favourite brands and sadly I couldn't procure a set for my SUV but since they're readily available for my bike I'm a bit tempted towards them but for now I'm sticking to stock tyres only based on suggestions of all respected members as I enhance my riding skills and experience.

Thank you
Tony

Re: My 'Pre-loved' Suzuki Gixxer SF250 Review | Fulfilling my childhood dream

As much as night drives are one of my favourite hobbies, night rides have been exciting me more nowadays, maybe due to novelty factor but yeah, I waited for these moments so long, I still remember back in the day when all my friends used to have a nice motorcycle and used to go for long night rides often with their GFs and whenever I used to ask someone to let me borrow their bike for some time so that I can enjoy a night ride too, everybody refused and I was left alone at my hostel room whilst everybody is enjoying, during those days, I used to see bike posters and imagine myself wearing a riding suit and enjoying my OWN motorcycle, one day. It took time but it did!

Coming to some more observations, which go as follows
  • The headlights are really good with useful pass function, making the night rides so much safer especially given the fact that we've too many potholes and unmarked speed breakers on our roads which appear out of nowhere. I'm liking it very much!

  • I'm really loving the rear 3/4th profile of the bike and especially during the night the LED taillights look fantastic, also the licence plate light is white LED too makes it look that much more cool and premium, even my SUV gets poor halogen bulb for the licence plates but I'm soon going to retrofit LEDs into them.

  • The horn is really loud and effective in our traffic.

  • As much as I love the lighting setup I wished Suzuki gave the Gixxer LED turn signals, at least as an accessory, similar to Yamaha R15, it does help in adding that sophisticated touch, also unlike many other modern bikes, Gixxer doesn't have a hazard signal, which is a bad thing IMO and something Suzuki needs to update ASAP.

  • The seats are comfy and since the position is not very committed, even a novice like me had no problems in riding the bike in traffic for relatively long times.

  • I'm really in love with the Matte Black paint finish of the bike and it complements my black cars too! The bike looks understated but very elegant as compared to loud and flashy KTMs we've around with their riders being similary flashy most of the times, if you get it. I know some KTM fans would be angry on me but sadly KTMs image in India is damaged beyond repair due to those incorrigible fools and their stupid acts out on public roads.

The riders' POV. Really love the light throw, this is low beam as I never ride with high beams on public road, be it bikes or cars and never recommend from doing so to others as well
