I had the first lot KTM 390 Duke, so there is some relative reference, even though not very fresh in mind. KTM engine was not happy on lower revs and we had to work with gears all the time. I was coming from Classic 500 with a very different riding style so could not adapt well to the 390 duke. Kept it for 3 years and eventually sold it.
The 400X engine is different in many ways but also somehow reminds me of the 390 engine. Let say, its different in the right areas like there is good amount of torque low down so one can ride peacefully at 18-20kmph in 3rd gear without lugging, where 390 would struggle and complain. I would go to the extent of saying that the initial torque delivery on the 400x reminds me of the Interceptor 650 and that is saying a lot.
Exhaust note is an integral part of my riding requirement and I never liked how the KTMs sound which is tinny and metallic. That will be one of my issus to tackle if I get this new 390 ADV. The 400X fares much better and the exhaust note actually sounds good, especially on de-acceleration.
The engine charater is somewhat similar to KTM but not as frenetic with usual high revving nature and associated vibes on the pegs etc.
When I took the stock 400X on the highway for the first time, I did not like the gearing. Even in 6th, the bike did not feel at ease and relaxed. After changing the front sprocket from stock 14 to 15 teeth, the highway manners have improved noticibly. 100 comes in quick time and bike feels at home. 120 is doable but lack of wind protection etc makes its presence felt. So a 15T front mod works in bikes favour, even the first two gears become more useful in city.
General refinement, engine feel, clatter or lack of it, feels better on the 400X. All big singles will have some sort of vibrations so does these two. These vibrations can be greatly reduced by tweaking and torqueing certain nuts and bolts like handlebar mounting, knuckle guard mounting and crash bar mounting. By tweaking, I do not mean making it more tight as at times we might have to loosen it to get to the right torque. This is something experimented over time and over ride, and also needs revisiting to keep the vibrations in check. |
