Is it possible to increase the mileage on the odometer? My speedo cable broke last night. I know the approximate distance I have travelled since then. I will have to open the ferring to replace the cable. Does the meter have a screw or something which can be used to increase the mileage to the correct figure?

HI,
If the cable broke, you should be having a mechanical odo. It is possible, by removing the unit and having it done by the local meter guys. But i suggest dont do this. The problem is once when its done the alignment of the numbers are not perfect and a person who knows this stuff well can tell you that you tampered the unit. When selling they will probably think you shaved off a few thousand kms to get better resale. As it broke just a day before, shouldnt make much difference.
If you still want to go ahead, find a good professional meter repair guy, see that the alignment of the numbers are perfect, after installing it, drive around 100kms and see if the alignment goes off, if it doesnt, then you have no problem.

Cheers
Dom

Now why in the world would you want to do that. Lol

Just get your cable fixxed and drive on. An overnight mileage figure won't make any difference at all.

BTW, how much did you travel?

how about ... raising the car.. and.. .. let it run in the 5th gear..... *.. some.. 20-40 kms.. is ok... *but won't work for more...LOL

Or better still.... before connecting the speedo do all the distance you did earlier... backwards!.... *manual ODOs are supposed to go ulta then.

oops..... its the motor bike.. section!!

The original cable broke at 17000 kms. The next one after another 6900 only. I have a mileage error of about 400 km between these.

The reason why I need to set the meter to its most accurate level is because I have a database which I use at home to calculate mileages, fuel averages & maintenance details for all my vehicles.

Due to the error, my database goes haywire & needs to be manually corrected. If anyone knows a professional in Mumbai who can do a good job, please let me know.

I don't want to open the meter as it will most likely damage it. Any alternative suggestions?

I would not classify this as tampering, since I am trying to increase the mileage to its correct figure and not reduce it.

I strictly maintain one myself too. Helps me keep a tab on the service history and when to do what...for all my cars. Things like servicing and oil-changing are of course in there. But I also have tables for wheel balancing/alignment, tyre rotation, polishing, interior detailing etc.

Entire service history of a car in a 20 kb file!

I too.. maintain.. a MS access database... .. not fuel though.... just service and repairs.

same here .
but i have a file where in i write everything that i have spent and whatever things are due, like the servicings, last polish done....
but nothing abt the fuel.

I have changed the cable. My mechanic advised me against any adjustments. I have modified my database to compensate the loss in reading.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
