Have been pondering about the Escort 100. Would we be able to near some kind of conclusion if the 'point in time' of the model that Siva has seen and that of matches that of Gansan. Could it also be that the small numbers that the Escort 100 was made\badged were released only in Chennai or is it just a coincedence that the bike that Siva has seen and Gansan are from Chennai. Let us see...

So Siva, what model (month\year) is the bike that you have seen?

Around what time was this Gansan?

@Sid: SX Enduro it was. After seeing pics in the link posted by deepclutch, I must admit that the 'O' looks like an 'A' and so easy to mistake it for Endura.

Thanks Deepclutch, has been years since I saw even a pic of the SX Enduro.

@Santhosh:
I was only exclaiming, no offence taken! Three of us went to the show room to book a RX 100 each, and were taken aback by the "Escorts 100" badging. When the dealer confirmed that they will be available only with that badge henceforth and showed us the news paper ad, we slunk away with long faces. After some time we bought the Ind-Suzuki AX 100. We would rather have half a Suzuki instead of a full Rajdoot.

@Siddhartha :
The rumour was the engine was a bigger capacity one masquerading as 100cc. As I said those were licence raj days and if the authorities found out there would have been hell to pay, so I never believed it. But as someone remarked, the gear box was indeed a 5 cog one, and had one cog removed for India.

It was in the mid eighties, around 86 - 87 I think. The ad was in a national paper, so the model must have been released at Bangalore too.

I dont think there was never ever any Escorts 100 (at least in Bangalore) and all original RXs were 98 cc from day one. All this is just cooked up stories that get passed around.

If they wanted to attaract rural customers they would have used the name Rajdoot 100.

There was, for a brief period. And they wanted to attract urban youth, hence the Escorts name. (It was infra dig to be seen on a Rajdoot for city youth). Perhaps they wanted to position Rajdoot for rural and Escorts for urban markets, and it bombed. May be they tested the waters in Chennai/TN only.

My 1990 RX 100's original speedo console had RAJDOOT embossed. Incidentally,some of the Rajdoot variant speedos were shared with the RX 100.Later on, "Yamaha" was embossed and that continued.My newly replaced speedo console has "Yamaha" embossed as I got rid of the "Rajdoot" console.
Other than this Rajdoot thing there was no Escorts 100 or anything like that. The company entered into colloboration with Yamaha Motors of Japan in the mid 1980's for the RX 100 (early 1980's for the RD350) and its wild imagination that the Japs will fully transfer the technology in a few years and allow usage of the Escorts name for marketing.
Moreover, the marketing under foreign names was in vogue then in the mid 1980's due to Govt relaxations, lifting such a ban. Remember the RD 350 was badged as the Rajdoot RD 350 with Rajdoot boldly written on the petrol tank.This was due to the applicable restrictions. The Vespas XE and PL 170 were among the first to use foreign brand names due to the relaxation.

AFAIK, the reason the RDs were badged Rajdoots was because they were made and assembled in the same factory as the remaining Rajdoot models. And the RX100 was made in the current factory in Surajpur.

Will be happy to be corrected. Also, with regard to the RX125, I believe seeing an article in Auto India way back (gosh, I dont remember when). Could anyone with access to old mags scan it and put it up here (if you remember what I m talking about).

Escorts Rx100

Hi Everybody!
There is a lot that has been written about the badging of the RX 100. As far as I remember, the RX 100s were launched with the YAMAHA Badge on the tank and RAJDOOT Badge on the Meter and these were sold like this for a very long time.
Then came a point of time when we heard of differences arising between Escorts and its foreign partner Yamaha. What followed next were the RX 100s with ESCORTS YAMAHA Badge on the Tank and ESCORTS Badge on the Meter. And these were followed later by RX 100s of an all ESCORTS Badging on the Tank as well as the Meter.
When things cooled down between both the partners, then these were rebadged as YAMAHA.
I hope the above information is correct.
I have been riding a RX 100 since 1988, ever since I learnt biking on it.
Regards.

Might be a cooked up story, but the engine note and performance of the earliest Rx-100's were significantly different from post 1987 ones.
I had a 91 model and my friend had a 86 model and you could easily make out the difference even if you are a newbie to bikes.
This difference in engine was backed up by many mechanics too!!
And those days there were many passionate road-side garage mechanics, who could open up an engine and repair/modify those minute things within, eventhough they were made in Japan.

Re: Escorts Rx100

I have a Yamaha RX 100 a Oct 1987 model. the speedometer does have RAJDOOT written on it. it was a common part that was shared with Rajdoot 175 which was sold alongside then. In fact I still have the speedometer intact
I wouldn't know if the escorts badge is original ,i haven't seen any yamahas ever with that badge

In my college days at Wadia College, Pune - 1987-89, have seen quite a few Yamaha RX 100 with the ESCORTS monogram on the speedometer. Boy.... those were the days and we were crazy about biking. But have never seen one with a monogram of ESCORTS
