Hi Asterix, even I got a '89 RX 100. My brother was using it till 2013. Its been covered and kept idle for a long time now. Let me know how your restoration is progressing.

May be even I will follow suit.

This thread brought back memories. My first bike was an RX100 that I bought from my uncle. Though I migrated to pulsars (150,220) and now own a tbts 350 riding experience of RX100 is unparalleled. One could pop wheelies without much effort on RX100.

Yamaha India officially announced they will no longer be supplying the Cylinder kits for RX series (after consuming the existing stock at warehouse and dealer ends) In recent days there were quoted a leg and hand for OE cylinder kits, after this announcements, I couldn't think of the situation

I live in Chandannagar located on the outskirts of Kolkata. I have finally bought my dream bike, a Yamaha RX135 4 speed after searching for about two years.I found the ad on OLX, and since Yamaha RX100 and RX135 4s(but strangely not the other RX models, God knows why)are very popular in this part of West Bengal, you have to respond pretty quickly to strike a good deal.I can give you a more or less accurate picture of the price of Yamaha RX100 and RX135 4speed in West Bengal.
1. Rs. 5,000.00 to Rs. 10,000.00 -- Absolutely run down bikes with no papers.I even found a bike with no number plates.I think many of these are actually stolen property.No question of making a purchase.
2. Rs.10,000.00 to Rs. 15,000.00 -- Bikes in average condition, but papers have been misplaced by the owners.I am still eyeing a RX100 in this category.With a little bit of luck, you may strike gold but transfer of ownership will be a problem.I was talking to my Motor Vehicles agent on this subject.
There is a thin margin of difference between categories 1 and 2. I will try to explain in my next post.
3. Rs. 15,000.00 to Rs.20,000.00 -- Bikes with proper but invalid papers. Maybe tax is pending for a long time.Again transfer of ownership will be a problem and you have to wait for a Settlement of Disputes scheme.
4.Rs. 20,000.00 to Rs. 25,000.00 -- Bikes with perfectly valid papers.I got my bike even with High Security number plates. But you have to spend some amount to get the bike mechanically ok.
5. Rs.25,000.00 to THE SKY -- Perfectly restored bikes with up to date valid papers.

Pretty decent prices, I would say. Down South here in KA, the prices are far North .


Bikes with in sufficient paper work also go upwards of 35k. With Papers, at least 50k. The RX-Z's followed by the RX135 with 5 gears are the ones that command a premium - asking prices even going beyond the 1L mark.

But at least the parts look more easily available compared to the other 2-strokers.

That's a bargain, I would say. Our bike in Blore was offered 50k+ that was restored 4 years back. It's the same scene in Cochin too. Could see many RX's when I had gone to renew the fitness of our old RE.

5 years back I bought a 94 RX from the first owner for 35K all papers intact. After 4 years, spent 80K and got it restored. Have to get the papers transferred to my name, my bad for delaying it so much :-(. Kept is completely stock including the carrier. Have to add the butterfly leg guard only.

The Production of Rx 100 stopped in March 1996 according to most websites. I am looking for one in Hyderabad and came across a bike where the RTA website and owner both say it is a 1997 model. The manufacturing date on the RC is september 1997. Was there production of Rx 100 in 1997 or am I looking at a shady deal? Please advise.

Should be a case of registered in 1997 and wrong manufacturing date entered by RTO (happens frequently)

Also check out the embossed marking on the cylinder block to identify whether it is a 100 or 135

Rx 100 cylinders will have 36L00, 36L10 or 98cc written on it. Just below the fins of the cylinder block.

Rx 135 had the 4TL00 written on it
(the 4TL10 5Speed came later so not relevant in your case)

Although not foolproof method but it can give you an idea if the bike is Rx100 or the RXG which came out in 1997.

The RC records are as reliable as the dealer/owner and the RTO staffers are. Sometimes these have gaffes that are amusing as well as misleading. I am referring to the date/year of manufacturing in the RC record as mentioned in your post. When there were manual entries, we sometimes had two motor vehicles with the same registration number.

Here in this matter, it could be possible that the RX 100 was registered, a year late due to some reasons. However, please check the relevant RX 100 embossed on the cylinder block visible at the base, just above the gearbox as stated by The Great below. Please also check the engine and chassis numbers and compare these with one or two other RX 100's manufactured in 1996.

Manufacturing of the Ambassador car was stopped on 24th May 2014. However, dealers had unsold, brand new cars till the third quarter on 2015. Hence, the RC record will mention date of registration as sometime in 2015 for such cars.

Point being, there's no fair value for a product that's no longer available in market & there's still demand for it. Someone was willing to dent a Lakh for my Rx 1-2 months ago that was restored in 2011 & is road legal (FC) until 2025. Fortunately that someone knew me & my Rx well, so that was the "fair" value he was willing to spare for us.

Although our brains knew its more than fair value, our hearts failed to see the 5 0's after 1. Quite unfair!!
