Hi Rennjit,

I had used a vernier caliper to measure the ID when we had difficulty sliding the replacement bearing in place.

An alternative would have been to machine the OD of sprag gear collar (where the bearing sits) to the right size.

But this idea was discarded, as I didn't have recourse to a lathe shop on a Sunday.

Secondly, I didn't want to forego use of my cycle for an extended period.

Re: The Royal Enfield 500 Classic thread!

Very Extensive and detailed review. Gave me a lot of inputs. I am intending to purchase a used RE Classic 500. I am getting a Classic 500 - 2010 model in 85K. is it worth the price. I had a RE Std 350 1997 model, hence I do not have any idea about the new RE's.

Please advise. Thanks

Is it possible to get tubeless tyres for Royal Enfield Classic 350cc?

Amit,
If your intention is to go tubeless, it's impossible with spokes based rim. If you upgrade to alloy rims then it is a go. I would not advice any aftermarket alloys as you see it on the internet for 12K, it could crumble on off-roadings, unless it is a genuine one.

However, you can fit a tubeless tyres but with tubes in it, as it is very hard to find a good buttoned tubed tyres.

I fitted a 4.25 MRF Moto C on the rear recently for my Leh ride, and it was a wise decision for me. This one rubs the underside of the mudguard when going over a hump or pot holes (numerous in Bangalore). My decision was based on another tbhp user, he was suggesting Moto C or D. I don't remember his handle or username.

A tubeless tyre on a spoke rim is indeed possible; big tourers world over have tubeless tires, mounted on spoke rims.
In fact it is possible to convert a normal
Spoke rim to a tubeless one after some DIY.
Worth it or not is anyone's guess. I had planned this for my classic 500, but never got time to execute it.

Mate the big tourers you are mentioning come with reinforced sidewalls on their alloy rims where the spokes are attached(See Triumph Tiger, BMW R1200 GS, Suzuki Vstrom 650, etc. spoked wheels). In case of a conventional rim you will see that the spokes are attached directly to the middle part of the rim. The conventional setup does not allow using tubeless tyres, however there are some modifications that can be done. But then again it is not fool proof.

Re: The Royal Enfield 500 Classic thread!

I ride a Classic 500 Desert Storm, 2012 model, 37000 kms done approximately. During my very recent trip to Spiti, the bike started spitting white smoke from the exhaust. I topped up the engine oil but the exhaust started spitting white smoke as well as some amount of unburnt engine oil.

I have never faced such an issue before. What could be the issue?

The oil is not burning properly it seems, issue with the piston ring?

Also can anybody point me to a good 500cc specialist in Pune? Maybe in one of the authorised service centres? I have been getting my bike serviced from Alex of Royal Motors in Pune, but somehow not very satisfied in the last few months. There is a new independent workshop which has opened near my place of stay, called Bullet Guru. The owners Mr.Negi and Mr.Jaikant are from the Roadshakers club. Any feedback of this workshop?

Oil shouldn't burn. Its place is outside the combustion chamber. As you mentioned, it points to worn out rings or scratched piston/cylinder wall.

That is correct. But absolutely makes no $$$$ sense for RE CL 350/500.

This is the Alpina Tubeless spoke wheel kit. Price varies between INR 100k to INR 150K per wheel depending on bike model in UK. By the time one gets it into India, the total price is likely to be in the region of INR400k.

I believe you had the same issue during one of the Tapri meets while riding to Lavasa. How was the issue resolved?
Looking at the issue, looks like a Piston/ring is the culprit.
As far as I know Alex does a pretty good job.I suggest you visit him again and see what he has to say.

I think it should be possible. See link -

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tubeless-kit...770165&vxp=mtr

Outex kits from Japan are available at Karol Bagh shops in Delhi for around 10k. One of my mates had got it done for his Street Bob. Don't know if it makes fiscal sense in a Bullet where you can opt for alloy wheels in the same cost. BTW my Heritage Softail Classic does come with Tubeless Tyres on spoked wheels.

Cheers...

Re: The Royal Enfield 500 Classic thread!

Thank you for sharing this info dkaile. More interesting than their tubeless kit is their puncture repair kit. Appears to be a better solution than Slime. Have bookmarked their eBay store.

I will check with Alex again, hopefully the issue will be resolved.

I'm planning to service my 1.5 years old CL350 (~15,000 kms) at Bullet Guru!

Had a chat with one of the guys.

Servicing cost: Rs. 450 (Includes wash & general check-ups)
You have all Motul engine oil options: 4T, 5100, 300V etc (charged per bottle)

They also keep the regular spares: handle-bars, seats (perfect seats), silencers (AEW), LED lights etc.

What I observed is there stock is same as Tehalia's (also a Roadshaker) located at Pimpri Chowk opp. Shakti Sports. But their mechanics work in front of the shop in very limited space! Servicing charge: Rs. 350/-

I decided on Bullet Guru as they have proper work benches & tools! As I don't require any special services just a regular service with oil change.

Hope this helps and please share your views! You can at least show them the symptoms and see their diagnosis before checking with Alex.

Cheers,

Re: The Royal Enfield 500 Classic thread!

Hi guys. I just joined team-bhp almost a month or so back. But I've read almost the all of the posts on this thread. Gave me some valuable insights into my Classic 500. Big thanks to Randhawa! Cheers!

Getting to the point. I guess all of you know that the rear seat is a pain in the butt, literally. I was thinking of replacing it with a carrier which maintains the old school classic aura of the bike. I saw on post on Royal Enfield's North America's instagram account. I really liked this carrier. If you look closely you'd notice that the front portion of the carrier is attached to the shock absorber's nuts, like how the rear seat is attached, while the rear is attached to the rear mudguard stays (I'm assuming that's what they're called).

So I started looking, and found something similar on Chawla Auto Spares' website. Here's the carrier. The only difference I noticed is that the rear rods which need to be attached to the mudguard stays look quite small.

Your ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
