Yes. The entire intercooler had to be replaced. It is a single unit as far as I could understand and since it was plastic, any welding repair was ruled out.

However, I am still unclear on how it cracked without any impact in the last 3-4 months! Probably an old small crack from a minor accident 4 months back propagated with time.

Re: Skoda Rapid : Test Drive & Review

Gave the car for service today with these complaints.
- Rare irregular idle
- Vibrations while braking from high (>120kmph) speeds
- RH power window was not working
- Small fix to the boot lid spring

I got a call back saying the power window motor has gone bad and price for the replacement is Rs.10,000. Any idea if this is correct? I checked Skoda's official list and it is not in there.

In Delhi you can go to a specialist, who will either repair the motor at a reasonable cost, or replace it. On the whole it would be around 500 for repair and not more than 2K for genuine replacement. You can search for such specialists in your town.

Thankfully I have extended warranty that explicitly covers the power window motor. Talked to the SA about it and was told that car would have to be in the service center for a week just for that replacement under warranty (apparently following some Skoda norms ).
I will also check for independent garages doing the same repair.
Other posts in TBHP related to this issue seem to suggest that the problem would most likely be around the switch-gear rather than the motor itself. I too feel the same since the motor must be robust and Bengalooru conditions should never break such a part.

On the brighter side, the idling issue was apparently something in the firmware and an update has been pushed. I really want to look at any error codes reported and will bug him for it.
And no issues with the brakes too, they were just cleaned. I have to test it out on open (safe) roads soon.

Recently I have observed a slight increase in idle RPM on rare occasions. The engine usually idles at around 700 RPM, and rises to 1000 RPM sometimes. I have not been able to pinpoint any particular reason when this happens. The first time it happened a month back was during heavy rains. But after that once or twice a week it appears again under different conditions.
There is nothing to worry about, ECU changes the idle RPM based on amount of oxygen available.High altitude is one of the most common reasons for RPM raise(try going up a to a hill station and see the magic), there are other environmental factors like pollution level which also contribute sometimes.

1) Good to know that the idle speed problem could be sorted just by an update
2) Vibrations (in the pedal) at speeds >120 km/h while hard braking is normal as that's typically ABS kicking in. However, such vibrations should not come on light braking.
3) You need to ask if they are replacing only the Motor or the regulator assembly altogether. The whole assembly would cost around 8-10k (A Scorpio one costs ~7k). Stress on seeing the problem yourself. Visit them and ask them to open the door panel in front of you and ask to be shown how the motor is malfunctioning.

All the best!

Re: Skoda Rapid : Test Drive & Review

1. Has anybody been able to find a solution for the 'thud' when going over speed breaks or potholes? It is quite irritating and service center doesn't even acknowledge this as a problem.

2. Sometimes when in stop and go traffic, on an incline (like getting over/down a flyover), there is a significant vibration when you come to a still position. This is both in D mode and N. The entire car just shakes. I am yet to go for my first service and it is not possible to reproduce under normal conditions of drive and on flat surfaces. So I am not sure how to even explain to the SA when I go for a first checkup next week.

Mine is a 2015 DSG - Diesel that has done about 2500 kms in 5 months.

The SA is talking bull. The procedure is, they call for the part, when it arrives, they call you, take pictures, put in a warranty claim, approval comes in a bit, replace part, take pictures again, send for warranty again, send you on your way. Should not take more than a 4-5 hours, max. including typical service station inefficiencies. Anything else should be unacceptable to you. Speak to the Service Head, and if that doesn't work write to Skoda.

This one's a scam, don't get it done again. Discs brakes (your front brakes) self clean as they're used, and drum brakes (rear) mostly never need cleaning through the life of the car.

When a service station says cleaning, they spray a solution onto the brake pads (they do nothing to the rear, where a case can be made for cleaning in rare circumstances) which in the best case, creates a temporary film on your pads, reducing braking performance for a few kms & worst case, corrodes the brake pads, reducing their life.

In fact the problem resurfaced as I was driving back from the service center ! But this time, I want to hook up to the OBD port and check for error codes myself. The SA said there were some issues in the firmware and that it was upgraded. He even mentioned they saw few error codes, and did some sensor cleaning.

I think he wanted to replace all of it, without any reason. That's why chose to skip it this time around and gather more information. Will insist on being there whenever I give the car for this replacement.

Thanks for the information bosporus. Will talk to the higher ups there the next time.

What I was told in the last service 8 months back was that the front disc had a slight deformity. I had asked to check for that, but it seems everything is fine except for the 'cleaning' they did. It was too late by the time I came to know about it, will avoid it next time.

I am still puzzled as to what is causing the issue. Waiting to buy a new OBD dongle (the one I have has gone bad) to scan for errors myself.

This service costed me 'just' (by skoda standards) Rs.4,500. Oil was topped up, filters were cleaned. They charged Rs.500 for the labour of checking the power window motor.

AFAIK, there is no 'solution' for this sound. I have learned to live with it!

Change the stock shocks to something better. Check this thread - Installed! TRW Struts in my VW Vento

Quote:
Car has totally transformed after the strut change and goes absolutely flat over all undulations, body roll has decreased drastically. Low speed ride has turned a little harsh because these Trw struts are much stiffer than stock. Also finally after 2.5 years, the rear thud issue is finally history. Tried multiple times and never heard that sickening thud sound. For those who prefer handling over ride, go with these TRW struts and for ride quality lovers, please stick with VW OE struts, for me the OE struts were way too soft. I am in love with the car again after strut change as i drive fast, mostly highways and soft suspension was a big irritant for me.

Did you feel a vibration in the brake pedal on light braking; as problem becomes bigger, it will transform to car shuddering on braking. If yes, the solution is to skim the disc - though company service centres will usually tell you to replace the disc, but skimming is just as effective a solution. Cleaning does nothing.

There are supposed to be no such charges, and most definitely not when the diagnose is leading to a replacement. Plus, your car is under warranty.

I would submit that this is not your job, or your area of expertise. You should insist the SA connect the car to VAG and do a diagnosis, and you should be there to see the results.

Importantly, I think you should a) write to Skoda about these random charges and ask for a refund (it happens, btw) and ask for clarity on these week long service procedures and b) change your service station asap. They are incompetent, or cheats, and most likely both. Check the forum for a competent ASS in your area.

Light braking is smooth and effective. Vibration happens only when braking from high speed, which I guess is more to do with ABS behaviour and I am just being paranoid.

Yes, I am no expert in the mechanics of a car. But would love to poke around to satisfy my curiosity and probably post scan results here for more feedback if at all there are some error codes lying around.
Also, I (and few others here) have had a good experience with Vinayaka's service the past couple of years. I did not want to quarrel with them yet, since the SA I talked to this time (think his name was Anand) was not the same as the one who had dealt with my car satisfactorily multiple times earlier. He seemed highly uncomfortable replying to my questions. I will try to get a better person assigned the next time, and get all the inspection done in my presence.

The juddering in the pedal because of ABS is only when ABS kicks in, i.e., when tyres are locking / about to lock. What you are mentioning is a disc issue - basically, uneven wear on the disc. Get it skimmed and it will all be good.
