re: Review: 1st-gen Honda Amaze (2013)

Just back from putting my Amaze VX-D thru its first long drive - Chennai to Hosur and back over a 30-hr period totaling 660 km.
Car was fully laden with 4.5 persons on way up and 5.5 persons on way back, and trunk 75% full.
Hitches / problems faced (minor ones)
- 2-DIN audio has no CD, only USB, which also has a loose contact and so could use only radio.
- steering mounted audio controls at 3 o'clock leave less space for horn control. Could have been better placed at 6 o'clock?
- light vibrating noise in the dashboard plastic. Could not pin it down exactly.
- Pickup surely suffers in comparison - when i compare it to a 105 BHP petrol Verna that I drove before. Is it normal?
Pluses discovered:
- excellent steering position / response / feedback.
- braking excellent.
Some numbers:
- Overall mileage on highway: 21.1km/l
- rpm range I cruised: 1500 to 2500, around 2200 rpm more often.
- cruising range: 90-110, hitting 120 just once.
- Time taken for one way drive: 5:45 (including 20-25 road diversions, 7 toll booths, one 15-min tea break.)
- City mileage (I have done 215 km in city) - 17km/l.

To be honest I still dont understand the concept of acceleration in particular gears if it implies driveability or outright power.

Maybe I guess the turbo spools in dzire and that kick helps in during accelerating in 3th and 4th gear after certain lag.

I am sure 20-50 in 3rd gear will slower in dzire and after that it accelerates quick to 80 (in same gear)

Could be, as Dzire sales is still a healthy 19000+ units.

Cheers!

Saw the first Amaze in Jayanagar in white colour. Looks really good for a small city car.

I have heard from couple of dealers in bangalore about people cancelling Honda City or came looking for City booked amaze. I m not sure why these dealers are spreading this news also. This would indirectly build interest towards Amaze and how can Honda see sales for City?
does this mean that City's resale value would also fall?

I think it makes business sense for the dealers when people convert petrol City bookings to diesel Amaze. Diesel cars inherently need more maintenance and parts replacements (Yay for dealers!).
As for the resale value, I think the top-spec petrol Amaze's price will have an impact on that. If you can get a sparingly used City for the price of a new i-vtec Amaze, that would be a really good deal and I would swing for the City any day. So how much lower can it go?

Overdrive's comparo between Dzire and Amaze.

Not much different from what Autocar has to say.

quarter mile drag (secs): 18.78 (amaze) , 19.22 (dzire)
Topspeed : 141 kmph (Amaze)

fuel efficiency (in kmpl) :
City : 15.86 (amaze) , 15.3 (dzire)
highway : 23.98 (amaze) , 23.89 (dzire)
Overall : 17.89 (amaze) , 17 (dzire)

re: Review: 1st-gen Honda Amaze (2013)

Any idea about deliveries of Base Model (petrol)? I, in Mumbai, had booked EX-MT(P) White colour on 06-Apr-13 and later changed the model to E-MT(P) and color to Alabaster Silver after two weeks, primarily because I didnt find EX-MT VFM over E-MT.
SA, after repeated requests, informed today that delivery will be till (sic) June. Is it taking Honda this long to deliver petrol models too? or SA playing tricks!

re: Review: 1st-gen Honda Amaze (2013)

Just doing back of the envelope calculations wrt petrol vs diesel amaze. As per current prices of both the fuels, it may take 60000 Km to break even and recover one lakh premium over petrol amaze. I have used arai figures on fuel efficiency. Need to book one for my father. His annual running is around 15000 Km. so it may take four years to recover extra money before reaping benefit of a Diesel engine. Honda has been good with petrol, hence a little more leaning towards petrol.

Not sure about Mumbai, but My FIL got his E-MT (D) delivered in Ludhiana 2 days back after approx 20 days of booking.
The dealer insisted on buying RSA, Extended warranty, Zero dep Insurance and also accessory pack from him. Very arrogant behavior by dealer.

To some extent Amaze seem to be cannibalizing the City. March sales figures of City is 3432 while the April figures stand at 1917.

Cheers!

I don't think so. Also, generally there is a decline in dealer dispatches in April, after the March year end.

It is bound to happen , In our case also original intention was to buy City.
But found fully loaded Amaze fitted the needs better because city with Airbags and ABS was hitting almost 12 and we did not have much utility for extra size and power as intention is city drive so scaled back on power and size and upped in terms of safety features.

Every manufacturer is trying to enter the compact sedan segment, and their higher segment models are being cannibalized, and how!

DZire did that to SX4.
Indigo CS did that to regular Indigo.
Amaze is doing that to City.
The upcoming i20 sedan will definitely do that to Verna.

Manufacturers, beware of eroding your profit and brand value! Customers, enjoy the VFM!
