Re: Tata Zest : Official Review

I own a Zest Petrol. Its 2 years old and ODO is at 22,000kms.
Of late, I'm having difficulty in slotting 1st gear when downshifting from 2nd when the car is moving at about 5-10 kmph. I'm forced to come to a halt and then 1st gear gets slotted without any problems and then I start moving again. This is a pain with city traffic behind me.
Anybody else having the same issue? Can anybody help identify what could be the problem?

Oh, @parth.jain - hope my response isn't too late for you. When the engine (Zest petrol) has reached optimum/operating temperature my car shows 3 bars. It has never shown anything more 3 bars even after continuous running for hours together at 40deg Celsius ambient conditions.

I own a Zest Diesel AMT bought in 2015 October. Have clocked 50K on it and have finished the 45K free servicing offer they had made initially. Zero cost of maintenance till 45K other than customary Wheel Balancing and Alignment every 5K (Company recommends at 15K). FANTASTIC is an understatement for the experience I have had with the Vehicle. On Highways (Pune- Blr) it gives a fabulous 26-28 Kms per litre (Tankful to Tankful method) !!! Supersmooth and lovely to handle...almost as if it has a mind of its own. Very good safety features. !!!

Re: Tata Zest : Official Review

My car completed 75,000 kilometres and the scheduled service.

I bought it in October, 2014.

Car has been good till date, with very minor irritants. It also held up quite good. No rattles till date.

I faced problem with AC within 2500 kilometres. AC would cut off and only blower would run for 10 - 15 minutes. After keeping the AC switched off for a few minutes and restarting, AC would work just fine. This was experienced for a few times. Service Advisor said it was due to faulty thermostat and rectified it during first service. The problem recurred nearing third service/30,000 km. That too was rectified, this time the reason being dust clogged air filter.

Apart from this, one other problem which recurs is front left indicator not functioning properly. I complain about it at every service. The problem gets sorted out, then recurs after several thousand kilometres. Some faulty connection could be the culprit. As the rear indicator and that on the orvm work, I am not too much concerned about it but it is an irritant nevertheless.

I bought the car when Tata provided introductory maintenance plan for 3 years or 45,000 kilometres under which all the scheduled maintenance, including consumables, is covered. So, till 45,000 km I didnt pay anything except for engine spray and door spray which costs about Rs.180/-. At 60,000 km Tata offered silver AMC for around Rs.14,000.00 which included both the scheduled 60,000 km and 75,000 km services. I opted for it as timing chain kit was scheduled to be changed at 60,000 km ( it was a 90 HP diesel). With a quoted Rs.7,800.00 for timing chain kit + labour and about Rs.6,000.00 for oil and filter change, I thought it to be a better bargain and went for it.

Wheel alignment, an achellis heel of previous generation of TATA cars, held up quite good. I didnt take it to wheel alignement between services as there wasnt a need.

A mention should be made about ground clearance. It never scraped it bottom where its competitors did, under similar loads.

Headlights are reasonably bright.

The time display on the head unit used to slow down. Between services, the time set slows down to about 12 minutes, ie., shows 12 minutes late. The issue was partially resolved after an update. I say 'partially' because now, after 30,000 km its only 2 minutes late.

Freyed Keyfob, split windshield washer cap, loosened and wrinkled door fabric insert are the quality issues along with broken tip of bonnet stay which made filing up or checking water/oil levels jittery, a seat slide adjuster cover which wouldnt stay in its plae are the other issues.

Re: Tata Zest : Official Review

If Tata would give a Zest with 1.5 110 HP diesel with suitability tuned suspension and wheels, I would trade my 90 HP Diesel for it.

My other conditions are a few more cubby holes, a touchscreen navigation with equal or better music system and 16" wheels.

A bit of change in the exterior would be great.

And dont forget about the fabulous AMC and warranty.

Re: Tata Zest : Official Review

Hello everybody,
My ZEST XT Diesel is almost 4 yrs old (50K kms approx.). Lately I'm seeing that my heater glow bulb initially glows on turning on the ignition key, then switches off. But after cranking up the engine, it starts to blink again and stays like that for quiet some time, then eventually it shuts off. Can the experts throw some light on, which sort of a warning signal does this indicate to?

Also as most of the running is in the heavy city traffic, during peak hours, have to use clutch very frequently. These days, I'm getting a feeling that that the clutch pedal reversal on release is not as prompt or smooth as it used to be. Am i being paranoid, or has anybody else also faced a similar phenomena with the diesel XT?

Will appreciate any help in this regard. Thanks in advance.

Time to change the glow plug. For the Palio it costed me 750 bucks. Didn't have to change it yet on the Zest. Suppose should be similar price for the Zest

Had a slave cylinder failure on the Zest. The pedal just died in a depressed position at a signal light. Since car was under warranty, got a free tow ride to service center and cylinder replaced free of cost. So better get it checked.

Touch-wood, in my 10 years of Palio ownership, the car never broke down/ stranded me.

Cheers

Is this a common issue with the 90 Ps Quadrajet engine on Tata Cars? Just last week my brother in law replaced his slave cylinder on his Vista D90. He didn't have any issues with the clutch pedal, however gear shifting had become hard. His car is 5 years old and has done 40K kms . I has been mostly driven for out of station trips.

Indicates a worn out clutch which ends up adding to the stress on the slave cylinder.

I too have a XT Diesel 90PS, almost three years old with 83k on the odo. I am too facing the heater glow bulb issue since two days, after my car came from the service centre after some repairs.

My clutch got changed at around 65K kms and I was also facing similar problems as you described in your post. I insisted on them for checking the slave and master cylinders but they were insisting on changing the clutch. Well, I knew that clutch was worn out so I got it changed(It was in bad shape when they removed it). While changing the clutch they also changed the slave cylinder under warranty as it was leaking. It may have given up because of the worn out clutch as @discoverwild said above. It costed me around 7.5k to get the clutch + pressure plate changed(including bearing and miscellaneous items)

I would suggest getting the clutch set changed as you have mentioned that your driving is in heavy city traffic. My clutch worn out at 65k kms with only 30% of my driving in heavy traffic, yours must be worn out most probably. It is the first time my clutch got changed so early, in my other cars they were changed post 90k+ kms.(Figo,City,Aveo)

A few days ago master cylinder of my car was also changed under warranty as the clutch had become very noisy. Just two days of driving again, the noise is starting to return. When I went there last time, they said the clutch needs to be changed. When I informed them that it had been changed 15k kms earlier, they said then it might need lubrication or master cylinder needs to be changed. My FNG guy says that the pressure plate has worn out and it needs to be changed again. I'll be visiting again in a few days.

After driving for 82k kms, I have realized that Zest's car parts do not have a good life. Most of the parts give up a lot earlier as compared to other cars. But the service experience has been much better than expected, these guys honor their warranty!

Re: Tata Zest : Official Review

I own a Zest XMS Diesel 2014 which has done 26500 km. While the clutch is fine, brakes have lost their bite. Asked the ASC to check it out. The AC control panel also needs a change as the blower switch has to be pushed in to work (cost estimate ~3,500). Never faced this on my earlier cars ever. The OEM battery - a Tata Green with a sticker for 37.5 AH (while the battery warranty card saying 40 AH) - died at 2.5 years, and replaced with a Amaron 45 AH.

What disappointed me was that on opening the hood at the ASC, a lot of rust fell out of the holes in the bonnet. Havent seen this much even in the old premier padminis and Ambassador - both infamous for body rusting.

Another customer, present there, told me 2014 cars have more corrosion than later ones due to something at the factory. Alarming. Am going to ask Tata about it.

But ASC's both in Delhi and now here in Mumbai, have been very good - in my expirience, far better than Hyundai, and as good as Maruti and Honda, except the effectiveness of turbo, about which I have had doubts right from the beginning, but the ASC's have been insisting there's nothing wrong - the engine power drops and could not go beyond 120 on the expressway, even on redlining, and I dont feel a tug around 2000 rpm. Mileage has dropped a bit from 17 to 15 in the city, and from 22 to 20 on the highway, though (tankfull method).

Not sure if this is how the powertrain is tuned or if the turbo has a problem, as this is my first turbodiesel car. Have been a petrolhead earlier.

Get all tubes checked ASAP. There might be a leak. Have you noticed any over heating? If you keep on running with a leak it'll damage the turbo vanes. Also get the EGR valve checked.

No, never overheated, never above midway on temperature guage, even when I was trying it out on the Taj Expressway. I was reassured 3 times by Concorde Delhi that the turbo and the engine was fine. The car is in the ASC so will get EGR valve and tubes checked, just to be sure.

Few things come to mind with this drop in power. These may be looked at and remedied ,
  • EGR Valve may need to be cleaned.
  • Air Mass Flow Sensor / its housing may need to be cleaned. Mind you, this is a difficult to reach part and most mechanics will discourage you from cleaning this or the EGR which is similarly difficult to reach .
  • See if the hoses connecting the intercooler are secure, sometimes the clamps come off leading to lesser air entering the intercooler.

You can also take a second opinion from Vijay (Friendly Neighbourhood Garage & Tata Specialist - Vijay & Pandit (Delhi)). He's highly experienced and should be able to diagnose the problem accurately and rectify it to your satisfaction.

Hope this helps !

Cheers !

Re: Tata Zest : Official Review

Thanks a lot for your help. Will get the ASC to check it, as I've shifted to Mumbai now, wont be able to use Vijay and Padit's services. Will look for someone good here in TeamBHP directory.
