I am in the market for a no-nonsense SUV replacing my 2011 Ford Endeavour AT. Wanted to go small and checked out the new Ecosport Titanium+. Disappointed due to the overall compactness.

Came across, today, a very well maintained 2015 model XUV 5OO W10 FWD in white with just 29000km on ODO. The asking price has come down from Rs.15.4L to 14.3L as of now. I was thinking of booking a Safari Storme VX 4x2 400 for Rs.16L.Now I am confused.

Please help out as to which one makes more sense here ? I am going to keep the vehicle for few years and hence reliability is the at the top of the priority list.

For XUV, he says, it has a warranty of 5 years/ 100000km. Does Mahindra offer 5 years warranty for XUV ?

Both cars are different in this regard. They are SUVs and priced very or shall I say dangerously close to each other, but they have different purposes.

The Safari Storme is now a dated offering. It's just the old Safari with a new body shell and doesn't really justify the premium in today's age. Only go for it if you want the Macho looks and the commanding driving position. When it comes to reliability, niggles are a part and parcel of the Safari experience. Not major ones, but minor mechanical and electrical issues are a given in most Safaris. There is no guarantee that Tata won't kill the Storme.

When it comes to the XUV, it has killed the Safari off and is much more VFM as compared to the Storme which banks on aspirational value more than anything else. It had its share of issues before, especially with regards to electronics, but Mahindra has been quick in taking feedback and sorting them out. Most of the niggles seem to have been ironed out. (Current XUV owners are free to comment on this aspect). Squeaks and rattles are a part and parcel though. Can't really help it although they have come a long way in this regard too.

I would pick the XUV if I were you. The 2.2 M hawk is also a proven workhorse (not that the Varicor isn't).

The XUV can have a warranty for 5 years if the owner has opted for extended warranty.

My personal choice would be XUV.

W10 comes with ESP & airbags, plus you get few fancy features - sunroof, push start etc.

Mahindra offers a 5 yr / 1 lakh km additional warranty for XUV.

This is what I'll do, take it as a suggestion.
1. Take a test drive of the XUV500 and the V400.
2. During the TD (not while driving) play around with all the gizmos on both SUVs, to get a good feel of everything.
3. Go back home, think of what you liked in each vehicle and which of those are important to you.
4. Make the decision.

My suggestion - 29k on a diesel SUV isn't a small mileage, the vehicle will feel used even if it's maintained well. If based on TD you like the XUV, go for the variant that fits your budget. Though I'd be a surprised if anyone likes the XUVs drive over the V400.

Go and have a TD of the new Scorpio and let me know your experience.

We sold off our workhorse, the VLX at 1.39L kms and have traded in for a S11 4X2 and the SUV has to be driven to be believed. I particularly like the suspension and its cruising ability because of 6th gear.

Though many of us were expecting XUV with 170 BHP tune to be announced at Auto Expo, the same has not happened yet. So, the one in pic is the same as that's currently available in showroom.

I got a call on Saturday from the dealership where I purchased my XUV regarding a recall of the front door latch clips. They dealership sent the mechanics to my home and they replaced the clips on both the doors in about 15 minutes.

These clips connect the dots latch cables to the lever in the door panel. The new clips are the white and orange ones and felt stronger than the old clips.

Hey Guys, I am planning to buy a used XUV.
Today I took a test drive of a 2016 model, 22000 KM run car.
Physically the car did not feel like it had been abused.

But on driving the car it felt rough, not just the rattles. The overall steering feel, the accelerator response just did not feel right.

I had test driven the new XUV at the showroom with 1500KM on the odo and I was pretty impressed. That was the reason for me considering the used XUV in the first place.

Now, I have a question - does XUV not tend to age well? As in, how much could the car have been abused in 20K KMs considering the fact that it was serviced well on time.

Should I look for other used XUVs? Or should I just drop the idea of a used XUV as the story is going to be same with other cars as well?

This is definitely an issue with only the particular XUV you looked at.

XUV’s age quite well, there are many BHPians whose XUV’s have crossed 50K KMS and are running smoothly.

Rattles are very common in XUV’s. You should consider them as a ‘feature’ in the car. Any XUV you see will certainly have rattles.

I suggest you look at other XUV’s too, the story might not be same with the other cars too.

I own a XUV which came to my garage 5 years back and did almost 50K so far.

As (rightly) said by Prathiiik, the XUV is not an easily "condemned" vehicle and it shouldn't feel rough. Rattles are common. Ref steering feedback, chances are the tyres of that car could be JKTyre Elanzos.

My advise is, keep looking for other XUVs in the market, especially for those cars which came with Bridgestone Duelers as OEM.

My car has just clocked 20,000kms and was taken for the 3rd free service. The service advisor says front disk pads have to be replaced, they would further last for just 500-1000 kms. But I don't feel any difference in braking so far, it's completely perfect. How can I verify this?

At what km intervals have you got your brake pads replaced for XUV 500 and what are the costs involved? I understand they depend on driving and braking of each individual, but would like to know your experience in general.

Though pad life depends on driving condition and style, its a favorite topic for service advisors.

Unless you are hearing or feeling any difference while braking, would suggest you don't change the same now.

I had changed mine at 30K Kms even though it was having few KM's left. My car is nearing 60K and haven't done by second change yet.

Suggest not to fall for that trap until you feel the braking is impacted and there is screeching sound when you brake. This is a normal tendency by Service advisors to inform customers to change brake pads at 20k service. I know people who have used upto 40k depending on their driving style.

Also XUV has the brake pad sensor which indicates when it is out of life, utilize that and don't become a prey to your SA.
