Yep mileage is low - but considering it's a Hyundai and a slushbox it is to be expected. How far is your typical city commute? Longer commute generally results in better mileage. |
Even I ended up test driving another same exact Verna and even it had the same problems. I reported it to the service center but there was nothing they said they could do about it. Yes it’s the diesel and torque converter to be blamed here but in my other torque converter cars like the creta which has the same exact engine and gearbox has less vibrations compared to the Verna. Damping sheet is a good idea to overcome this. I’m astounded that it had no impact on the clatter. Are the results competent though?
It’s so strange hearing these complaints of diesel clatter. My nearly 3L kms run VERNA CRDI is still one of the most refined diesels around. Still drives like new too.
I get around 13-14 kmpl in city and 21 on the highways.
Any changes to the engine apart from the detune ??

We own both 2014 Verna 1.6 CRDI and 2019 Next-Gen Verna 1.6 CRDI in the family, the refinement is not comparable to each other. The 2019 Verna sounds coarse inside the cabin and there are considerable vibrations in cabin when compared to the fluidic Verna. There is so much more diesel clatter in the Next-Gen Verna.

Now the comparison with Creta is interesting. You are right, they are same engine/gb. Probably is it the issue with engine mounts then? One of the members mentioned that he had to get the mounts changed to take care of excessive clatter on this same thread.

I’d look into it. If the mounts trick works then I’d be more than happy and keep this car for another 2-3 years. The Creta even though is 4 years older than the Verna, Its engine clatter is way less and its far more silent. :Frustrati
I have been able to extract a FE of 20kmpl on the highway in my 3.5 years old & 10k driven 1.6SX petrol. The car was driven at 70KMPH on Cruise Control. Normal highway runs returns approx. 14 - 17kmpl on the highway & 8 -10 kmpl in the city. Attaching an image for reference clap:

Even though I said I don’t care about the FE, when a petrol has more FE than a diesel you can feel a bit aggrieved.
Can somebody post the specs and cost of a Verna Next Gen 1.6 Diesel's battery? The car was manufactured in June 2018.
i find online portals like batterybhai and amaron.in confusing. There are too many variants of Verna listed in the former, and the Verna diesel is missing from the latter.
Thanks in advance.

AFAIK the OEM battery is Exide rated at 60Ah. This is same in my Creta 1.6 Diesel (Oct 2017). I changed the same to Amaron FLO 68Ah in January 2019.
OEM Exide
Rated at 60Ah
New Amaron
Rated at 68Ah

Thanks Anurag. We changed to a newer Amaron that cost us Rs 5600 after exchanging the older Amaron. The one you have replaced is an older model that now costs 4900 in exchange.
The stock Amaron lasted only 2 years 7 months! I guess there is more battery drain on newer cars that have ventilated seats, sunroof, DRLs etc.
I am very curious as to what maintenance the ventilated seats require, once the car becomes older? Is it costly/hard to maintain, or is it just like your normal AC unit?
Secondly, does turning on ventilated seats on the highest setting, also affect the fuel efficiency of the car?
I own New Gen 2018 Verna 1.6 diesel. If I stop in the middle of steep uphill and try to start from there, it needs atleast 2 to 3 attempts to pick up, engine stalls. Is this a coordination problem or diesel engine don't have good pick up or need to press accelerator fully with black smoke from echaust?
Such issue wasn't there with my Ritz Petrol before. I drove it in Ghat roads in Kerala and Kodaikanal frequently.
Any member facing such issue? Experts please guide on this.

How many KM have you done? How is the maintenance track of the car? I had a 2013 1.6 CDRi SX(O) and have driven it across pretty steep climbs (Wayanad, Ooty, Munnar, Kodai) - never faced what you're describing. And never has it belched black smoke.
Check the air filter, MAF sensor. Check how good the clutch is, your mileage in normal driving in the plains should be 15+ KMPL at least.
Short answer, no - the 1.6 CRDi doesn't stall that easily, and the Verna Diesel is as powerful as some of the cars that were sold along with it in the D Segment!
Thank you for your time and suggestions. I drove it for 40k with timely servicing. Mileage is also good...21.6km/l for past 6k km.
Will get MAF sensor checked.

40k is nothing for the Verna :)
Mine was at 1.10 lakhs when I sold it with the factory clutch! And your mileage is good too - the ~15 KMPL I've said is mine, with 120+ KMPH (that + is like full throttle :D).
Any idea how steep the gradient is? The car is powerful enough to climb 30° gradients is 2nd from standstill without any accelerator input (wouldn't advice you to try, bad for the clutch)!
And how are the tyres, are they stock Bridgestones, maybe getting worn out @40k - or have you changed them?
Sigh! I miss my Verna!
