Limited dealers is nothing when considering the fact that now this car is claimed to be made to order. So even the selected dealers won't be maintaining a large enough stock, or probably any stock at all.

Re: Tata Tiago JTP : Official Review

Amazing review, amazing cars!! Pure enthusiasts' cars are rare in our market and I salute Tata Motor's guts to build one for us enthusiasts.

You gotta love hot hatches. Practical enough for everyday use, yet you can have immense fun when the opportunity presents itself. Wonder why manufacturer's are so reluctant to build hot hatch versions of their regular hatches? It isn't that difficult. You've got the basic car. Plonk a bigger engine from one of your midsizers, calibrate the suspension, steering and brakes, add some tasty design elements and you have it! I think we need more car guys in these car companies.

Re: Tata Tiago JTP : Official Review

It was a pure delight to that enthusiast in me reading though this review, tbh it's been quite a while me getting excited to read the engine section! And hey that was purely a biased write up there on the engine, you were just biased towards your heart when you wrote that engine section, weren't ya?

So in essence JTP twins are the regular versions tuned by professionals just that it’s done at the manufacturing level and street legal! I hope some regular Tiago/Tigor owner one day decide to plonk a Nexon engine and tune the suspension, it will be so much fun to read that thread and to compare with a JTP!

Re: Tata Tiago JTP : Official Review

A great enthusiast package. Its really great that Tata is definitely giving the much needed attention to performance enthusiasts in the era of mileage and suv/crossover lovers.

My pick will be the Tiago over the Tigor. The red Tiago looks hot.

The only apprehension i have is, i hope Tata do not take this model off after few years due to low sales & owners suffer from poor resale and availability of spare parts. Going by the history, apart from the Polo Tsi, no enthusiast car survived the market.

Example -
Palio 1.6
Liva 1.5 Sportivo
Abarth Punto
S-cross 1.6
Polo 1.6
Getz 1.5 crdi

Re: Tata Tiago JTP : Official Review

As a car enthusiast you seldom used the word "untouchable" in relation to cars. You liked cars, you lived cars, you breathed cars. You spent time reading about it, adoring the shape, loving the noise of the engine and your dreams were also about cars. So how could they be untouchable?

Enter Tata.

They shattered that myth. And how. They actually could make cars that were untouchable. And they did that very well. Every single car they made. From the Indica to the Indigo. As for the Sumo, if you had a thing for breadboxes you would love the Tata Sumo. Only that a breadbox would handle better on corners. All cars were toned down versions of their trucks. What was inexplicable was that this was a car company run by a car guy who owned Ferrari's.

Times change, feelings change and so it is with Tata.

The Zest was a car that was better than its competitors in terms of handling and driving dynamics - probably the best amongst its competitors. The minute you sat in it, you realised Tata had made an effort. And the results were there to see.

The Tiago and Tigor moved those goalposts further - they even started looking good.

And now it's the JTP. A homegrown sports hatch at a reasonable price that appears to tick all the right boxes.

But now it's time to see whether this will fly. And enthusiasts are going to find a hard reason to skip this choice if it's in their price band.

Time will tell whether Tata has made the right decision in putting these out in a country where most enthusiasts write about their enthusiasm and then go and buy a non enthusiast car.

Hope it's proved wrong.

I think Tata are very realistic about JTP sales and they are very cautious in their approach. There are selected dealers nationwide and each dealer is only getting 1 Tiago and Tigor JTP each for display and test-drive. Rest all the cars are going to be against confirmed bookings. So Tata knows that JTPs aren't going to set sales on fire.

As for spare parts availability, its a standard Tiago with a standard Nexon engine and then some tweaks on top. Maybe the suspension is only component that will be specific to JTP. Overall, I don't see big challenges for part availability since JTP is based on successful models.

Don't want to take this off-topic but Indica, Indigo, Sumo and others were not that bad. Yes, Tata forgot that passengers cars need to be refreshed frequently and these cars were outdated a decade ago but it will be harsh to call them untouchable.

While the success of JTP may not be certain, Tata has definitely put an aspirational product on showroom floor. If nothing else, this will create a brand image that Tata makes drivers' cars.

Re: Tata Tiago JTP : Official Review

Does the JTP have the 80/120kmph buzzer? Hope Tata has not enabled it just yet. It's a real shame that special cars like these will also have to wear this badge of shame.

Tiago JTP demo car has arrived at Hyson Motors Thrissur. Test drives haven't yet begun, but boy, is that a beauty!

Re: Tata Tiago JTP : Official Review

I'm super excited that this is my first post on Team-BHP, that too on the most awaited review of 2018. This is the most detailed review of the JTP twins and kudos to you for that.

I visited Gurudev Motors, Koyambedu in Chennai early/mid November and saw the Tiago JTP and I was blown away by its looks. My phone was dead so I couldn't take photos. When I opened the bonnet, I noticed that it had an Amaron battery which I also noticed in review pics everywhere. The normal Tiago comes with an Exide battery.

The sales guy told me it would take some time before they get the RTO clearance for test drive. I called him today and he said it would take another 10 days.

Tigor JTP is still not available even for display it seems.

Re: Tata Tiago JTP : Official Review

What an effort. Both from Tata Motors and the reviewer team.

Feel it is more of capability demonstration act than a sales focused one. Tata brand traditionally is associated with non-exciting workmanlike vehicles, that clearly is undergoing transformation. Their willingness to give centerstage to Jayem is surprising though. Wondering if it was just not possible for Tata to pull it out on their own.

Re: Tata Tiago JTP : Official Review

Finally; our first home grown reasonably fast hatch, engineered and built in India.

A bit disappointed about the engine responsive. You would think that a large 3 pot petrol should get away with lag, as by design, 3 pot NA's do pretty well at the bottom end of the rev range. Then again, the whole point of slapping a turbo to a motor is to give you that whack once the rev's build up. The joy of driving a manual turbo petrol is to keep those rev's in the zone and keep whipping the car. If you are going to baby the car and expect fireworks, that kinda defeats the purpose of driving a turbo petrol. Personally; I like being pushed back in the seat. I like that wave of torque. On the JTP, revving the engine is even more rewarding as there is something to look forward to such as the BOV and exhaust note. No car south of 30 lacs gives you this.

I will go to the extent of saying that TATA have done a better job with these JTP twins than some of the more respected names in the business. The fact that they were willing to hand their cars over to an in-house (Or rather in-country specialist) to improve their product goes to show that there is some "Heart" or "Enthusiast" floating around somewhere in the company.

Thanks for the review.

Jayem Auto is a well-known name in the racing industry. They used to build Formula-3 cars. Not sure if they are doing it now. Tata and Jayem have a long association with testing and tuning. The brand name Tata is associated with family cars and trucks, whereas Jayem is more known for racing than their testing prowess. J. Anand is a former rally racer from the 80s to the 90s and is the head of the technical team at the INRC for Team MRF.

Re: Tata Tiago JTP : Official Review

Great review!

All reviews about the JTP unanimously highlight one fact which is the sweetly tuned handling package. This holds a lesson for any manufacturer aspiring to put out a hot hatch. Start with the handling. The review highlights the excellent work that JTP engineers have done on the suspension making it so much fun but keeping the required compliance for comfort. Maruti in the Baleno RS and VW in the GT twins to a lesser extend epitomise an oversight in this regard. In both the cars the suspension is tuned too soft to really enjoy the performance. It's great to hear that Tata has put in an enormous effort to address this area and from the review it is clear that they have hit a home run. A couple of simple improvements in this area had made a big different in the driving experience of both my old GT TDi and the current RS.

The modifications in the looks department reflect great taste and everything has a production feel rather than a tacked on accessory job. Aspects like the hood scope that is functional give an enhanced credentials to the sporty intent rather than simply tacking it on for the looks. The Tiago JTP is spot on in this regards with the inherent proportions of the hatch enhancing the modifications. The Tigor does look nice but the section above the rear wheels looks a bit bulbous. I also felt that the chrome treatment of the rear taillamps give it an aftermarket JDM look. A red reflector or blackened lens would have been so much better. I just can't stop staring at the image of the red Tiago JTP!

The cars have a clear positioning though - the Tiago is for the single and newly married enthusiasts while the Tigor is for the enthusiast with a family who has the requirement for interior and boot space. However the lack of low end torque may be a potential downer in the city and may be a turn off for those wanting the car as a daily driver.

An excellent package from JTSV an I hope the market response encourages them to work their magic on the Nexon and the upcoming Tata 45X premium hatch.

Re: Tata Tiago JTP : Official Review

JTSV Tiago JTP came home this Saturday! Have only driven from showroom to home so can't write any meaningful impression as yet. There is a lot of driving coming up over next few weekends which will help in gathering initial impressions.

Special mention is due for the enthusiasm of JTSV team who ensured their presence during the delivery. In fact, they did more rigorous PDI of the car than me! The excitement level all around was evident from the fact that showroom staff and JTSV team wanted me to take the car and unleash all 114 horses from the word go!

The delivery experience was very special and it really showed that this is one car made for the enthusiast, by the enthusiast.

As for now, I only have this customary pic. Will piece together better pictures and start drafting the ownership experience!

P.S: This isn't Tata Tiago JTP but JTSV Tiago JTP. JTSV is a separate entity which is modifying and selling these cars. Even the owner's manual has no mention of Tata anywhere. This is also the reason registration is getting delayed because JTSV is not registered at manufacturer at RTO.
