Re: Mahindra XUV300 : Official Review

Headlamps Upgraded

So after much contemplation, I upgraded the headlamp bulbs for my XUV 300 W8(O). The stock bulbs were not proving to be sufficient. After going through multiple posts here and equal number of review videos on YouTube, I decided to go for the trusted Osram LEDs over multiple other brands available in the market.

Selection:

I chose the following bulbs:
High beam (H1): 50W, 6000K (White light). I chose the 6000K temperature as I wanted the roads to be brightly lit when required. Also, I would be using it sparingly to deter those drivers who are always on the high beam mode with their bright LED lamps.

Low beam (H7): 50W, 4200K (Neutral). The reason for going for 4200K temperature were pretty simple- its the recommended temperature, its suitable for rainy and foggy nights and the light would be sufficient for the city travels.

Purchase:
These bulbs were available on Amazon at INR 4400 per pair but the delivery time was too long. So I checked with Planet Car Care and they were ready to match the Amazon's price. After I placed the ordered, it was delivered within 3 working days in Pune.

Installation:
As far as installation is concerned, the low beam has a projector set up and the stock bulbs have the same plug configuration so it was easy. The stock high beam bulbs have a single pin plug while the LEDs that I ordered have a 2 pin set up. So I searched on Amazon and found a connector with a 2 pin to 1 pin converter set up. It was easy then.

The effect of the bulb upgrade has been outstanding, the difference is like day and night (quite literally). I can confidently drive through the darkest of nights with ease.

Re: Mahindra XUV300 : Official Review

Hello deepCarLover,

I am also looking to carry out a similar upgrade. Could you kindly share details of the LEDs and the connector?
I am also facing a similar dilemma regarding the 2 pin to single pin difference in the h1 bulbs. I did not want to carry out an insulation tape job as most of the people recommend on YouTube and the FNGs.

Thanks in advance.
Cheers

I have been facing the same issue with the headlamps in my XUV300 but at the same time speaking with a Mahindra service advisor has put me in dilemma on whether I should go for an off market upgrade.
As per him & I quote "You can definitely do an upgrade but my advise is retain the stock bulbs & make sure to revert it to stock whenever you bring the car to garage for service or whatever purposes, if the service team find the bulbs have been upgraded to non OEM ones, they'll void your warranty"

Any clarity on this would be immensely helpful.

Re: Mahindra XUV300 : Official Review

Got the dreaded 'Transmission Malfunction' error!

A couple of days back, while returning home with family, I encountered my first serious problem with our XUV300 AMT: three instances of transmission failures in the gap of five minutes.
  1. Vehicle in idle state (gear position Neutral) at signal. Half a minute or so after coming to a complete stop and without any further action from me in the interim, I get the warning beep and the Transmission Malfunction alert on the screen. I try toggling the gear to manual, but to no avail. After switching off the ignition and restarting the car twice (i.e., complete electrical shutdown), I am finally able to get the gear to shift to A1.
  2. Vehicle in motion (gear position A2), I get the warning beep and the gear shifts to Neutral IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. Thankfully, I am able to move to the side of the road thanks to the momentum of the vehicle and a slight slope in the road. Again, it requires two rounds of off-on before I get the gear working normally.
  3. Vehicle in idle state (gear position Neutral) at a traffic standstill. This time, thankfully, it requires only one round of switching off and on before the AMT works normally.
According to PPS Service Centre, this is because the clutch plate is worn thinner than the sensor deems suitable, and that the solution is to replace the whole clutch plate and slave assembly unit. Initial quote is 16K+.

What has shaken me even further is that both PPS and Mahindra maintain that this is normal wear and tear, and therefore NOT eligible for warranty! But is it really normal - for an AMT vehicle that's done under 34000 kms in 3.25 years, with more than 80% of those kms on highways?

I recently visited a service centre in Pune to get my rear parking sensor fixed. As the usual inspection of vehicle was going on, they checked the lights, both low and high beams and the LEDs shone brightly. But the service advisor or the mechanic didn’t care about it. So based on this experience I think it should be fine to go to the service centre with LEDs.

Hopefully that clarifies your doubt.

Update:
Soon after I tweeted tagging Anand Mahindra and Nitin Gadkari (along with Mahindra's official Customer Care handle), I got a call back from Mahindra's Area Manager Mr Raghu that they were going to do a deeper dive into the issue. When I insisted that I needed the car back within a couple of days as I had a road trip the next week, I was offered a courtesy car through PPS while my XUV300 stayed at the service center for further diagnosis.

Fast forward to a week later, I've been informed that the entire clutch assembly has been replaced free of charge and that Mahindra's Tekteam will continue to study what went wrong with the old parts. I got my car back yesterday, and there is a noticeable change in performance - the car does seem peppier and rides as it did when it was just a few days old. Altogether, while the quote was INR 37K at the end of the day including labor, I needed to pay less than INR 1K for some incidental charges.

I've gone from being really angry at their initial diagnosis to now feeling happy with the way they eventually responded and addressed the issue. It's good to see a manufacturer taking their own positioning seriously and treating the customer well. I was pleasantly surprised to be offered a courtesy vehicle (a more premium model at that!) and the understanding that Mahindra and PPS showed in terms of my pressing need for a vehicle.

On a side note:
The courtesy car they arranged for me was an XUV700 MT AX7. It had its share of niggles, such as no Fastag and a non-working driver's side window, but other than that, it drove like a dream. Despite the fact that I was driving an MT after a while, it was quite easy to get used to thanks to the tall gearing and the strong Petrol engine. Even after hundreds of kms on the highway, I wasn't fatigued. From Bengaluru to Trivandrum via Kanyakumari, and then a return via Yercaud, the 700 somehow managed to feel both big and maneuverable at the same time.

Can the BHPians testify, if their cars show the same as my MID case in contention here?
I could not find any replies to this point on the thread. Mine too shows a minimum of 10 kpl on the MID and on the ecosense screen of the infotainment. Is there some kind of software update that's needed to fix this?

Thats a happy case and memory for you with Mahindra However i'm more curious to know whether you were able to find out the root cause of the issue and why exactly did they replaced the clutch kit for almost free since you car was already 3.5yrs old? Usually clutch plates are not covered under warranty unless it has failed within a year which can be considered as an exceptional scenario of defective part.
Let us know as this will help for many XUVians out here. Cheers~

I never got an official answer from Mahindra. However, from what I've seen of similar issues reported here and on reddit, and from my conversations with the technicians there, I would guess that either the sensors measuring clutch plate thickness are set to trigger warnings way before the fault point, or there's a job lot of clutch plates that were not built to specs to last as long as they should.

1,20,000 kms in 4 years: an update

I have a diesel W8 Opt MT bought in March 2021.

Things changed in the first 3 years over stock:

Installed 3 point seat belt for the middle rear seat.
Audio upgrade with door damping
Changed the spare tyre and steel rim to r 17
Installed dual dash cam

Mechanical replacement:
Rear brake pads 76000 km
Clutch assembly 78500 km
Front brake pads 90000 km

This year was mainly uneventful with multiple weekend trips with a mileage consistently over 18 kmpl.

The one major road trip in the 4th year was a 6800 km trip to Nepal in September 2024 (https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/trave...ml#post5849715 (Tamil Nadu to Nepal in a Mahindra XUV300 W8 Opt Diesel MT | A memorable trip during the monsoon)) at the fag end of the monsoon and with landslides and this vehicle pulled through with flying colours.

I do get a few PMs regarding clutch wear and to increase longevity, and Conti tyres, especially wear on one side.

I would assume driving style for longevity and clutch riding to be a cause for the issue.

I have been using the Conti UC 6
215/55/r17 tyres after changing from the stock MRF Ecotred, which I changed at 20000 kms of running. One tyre at 70,000 kms was eccentrically bald at 70000 kms, while the others were good. Mahindra XUV300 : Official Review-img_20230930_123302.jpg
This was in spite of doing tyre rotation, alignment and balancing every 6000 kms. That instance I had to change a pair and shift them to the front. The next pair was changed at 83000 kms which are in the front now and I do side to side rotation. My guess is these last for 60,000 to 70,000 kms maximum. I think that in that instance of eccentric wear, could have been a one off incident. However, there is a slight increase in road noise at around 45,000 kms.

Having touched 13 States, 1 Union Territory and another country, Nepal so far and fast approaching the age of 60, I can truly say I love driving this vehicle, with hardly any time spent at the ASC , other than for the routine. While the boot space will be a concern for some, we never travel with suitcases, preferring duffel bags.

For the past 3 years, there has always been a long trip each year, visiting classmates in MP and in Bhilai and I hope to continue to do so.

The distance travelled the first 6 months was 10000 kms, 14000 the next six, 26000 kms the next year, 35000 kms the 3rd year and 35000 kms the fourth and I am happy I got the diesel engine. For comparison it took 11 years to touch 1,35,000 kms in my 3rd gen Honda City from 2010.

Odo in March 2025

Post script:
The odo is now at 1,22,275 kms and there is a slight noise on going over speed breakers and a slight shudder on hard breaking though not alarming. I checked out the shocks which I plan to change at the next service.
