Purchase a thick steel chain, the sort that would hold an elephant in place.
A padlock with equally thick hardened shackle, preferably Godrej. Lock the steering with this chain to the seat or some other hard point.

These things are cheap but it works as a deterrent against theft. You can carry them whenever you know you are going to park the vehicle in places of such concern.

As for the things inside a soft top vehicle - it all needs to be out of sight, else there is nothing between the valuables and a razor blade.

I am not viewing this forum as a place where one may be judged for sharing one’s usage based feedback and information, which is why, as a fully paid-up customer, I have given my own personal usage-based endorsement stamp to this product. I stand by my word in this matter as an user. And I have nothing to gain from this, financially or otherwise.

Lastly I ll leave another thought here. Oftentimes we see (abroad) that people upgrade and modify their vehicles with ARB and IronMan and Bilstein and all.
Your first post came out as if the product is endorsed by Mahindra, which it is not. And that is the point I wanted to highlight for the benefit of unsuspecting/new members of the forum.

And I am not averse to after-market upgrades myself. I upgraded the suspension of my Verna to Teins on the first month of ownership itself and now also run a remap.

Hey Hayek. Thanks for your quick observations on the Thar.

Can you please share where you rented it from in Goa? Any contact details and their location please? Any other feedback on the rental agency itself?

Thanks

Hi Ganesh, yes its like the other members have quoted. Its one year comprehensive + 3 years third party, the comprehensive will be renewed every year. You will see the difference when you renew as the total goes down by more than 50% (I think i renewed at about ~25K) for the same comprehensive package and addons.

I'm glad I got the diesel. Not that it lies miles ahead but still way better than single digit.

I'm still impressed by the FE I got considering the engine size and body shape.

You might have read it wrong.
It was 43 litres drunk for 358odd kms so last weekend’s mostly highway trip which included a marginal bit of 4H gave me about 8.32kmpl tank to tank.
This week and weekend just gone by was 150odd
Kms in a mix of really heavy weekday crawly traffic plus some highway plus marginal 4H and it drank 21.5 litres so it has given 7.2kmpl tank to tank.
But yes, the FE in the petrol Thar is truly horrible.
I wish petrol weren't as expensive!

As I said let me see how the FE is between tomorrow and Thursday - this is a largely highway drive with a bit of hilly terrain and back. Perhaps around 600-700kms max.
Let us see how much petrol this 2 litre turbo monster requires this time!

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

At 42000kms my 2021 convertible Thar diesel has given me the following problems:

1.) Broken alternator belt
2.) Leaked rear shocks
3.) One bad horn
4.) Kaput fan blower actuator
5.) One weak cell of the battery
6.) Broken plastic fitment of the soft top
7.) Broken blower plastic nobs

Out of these the company has/will replace the following under warranty: rear shocks, horn, actuator.

Guess a Mahindra will always be a Mahindra. But it’s a decent vehicle nevertheless.

P.s.-I’ve never done any serious off roading with it.

Went for a spin around the farm after writing the above post, which I guess, offended the Thar Gods a little. While crossing a 3 feet wide dried up nallah, across a mud road, the rear end of the jeep scraped on the edge at almost standstill speed which amounted to dangling of the plastic shield for the plastic fuel tank held together by plastic bolts.

Now I have a spare “fan-belt”, two spare fuses in the glove box, a spanner under the seat (because of no dedicated space) a plastic fuel tank cover in the boot, on and off push starting routines because of the bad battery sort of reminds me of my dad’s Mahindra jeep from the 90s.
The saying that every boy eventually becomes a copy of his dad holds true for the Thar too, I reckon.

I'm surprised at this list, esp. coz I crossed 42k earlier this month - and do not have most of the issues you've listed - except for the broken AC Vent.

What sort of usage pattern do you have?

That saying is

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

On Fuel Efficiency and suchlike matters ref my Thar Petrol HT AT.
Yesterday my friend and I travelled around 300kms. Just our golf bags and a couple of small bags and soft suitcases.
Left Home 0530 via NICE Road to the Mysore Expressway which starts just after the turn out.
And went past a couple of diversions Maddur and Mandya etc. Hit Columbia Asia Manipal Hospital Mysore. Right turn to Hunsur/ Yelwal and onto Coorg. Just one stop along the way for breakfast past Periyapatna at 0900 and were at the Ainmane Coffee shop in Madikeri at 1000.
Then some back and forth around the golf course and all - up and down some hilly terrain and undulations with some roundabouts etc and back.
The whole highway drive was done at 100-110kmph at the very max. Cruise control on most of the time. Less traffic being a weekday hence smooth travel.
The odo was at 17995 when we left Blr. This morning just now I filled up 27.54 litres. It is at 18295 at the time of filling now. This means an average fuel consumption of 10.89kmpl on this drive, which I believe is pretty reasonable. I guess one can eke it out to 12kmpl by driving at 80-90kmph. But then the joy of the petrol ‘whoosh’ will be sorely missed.
As you can see from the pics attached, during the drive along the highway the vehicle registered 12.7kmpl and all on the Digital readout. This came down to 11.2 or so when in the hills.
But the real tank to tank average on the way out is around 11kmpl.
Now let me use the vehicle again today whole day and tomorrow to drive back to Bangalore and fill up in Bangalore to see what Fuel efficiency I actually get.

Hehe.

Petrol is way behind in terms of fuel efficiency. Do let us know what FE you get while cruising at 80. 22 and 12 are poles apart. I know 22 won't be the actual figure but even if MID is off by 2, 20 kmpl is still acceptable for 2.2L.

Guys, please also share reviews of the Ironman. End of the day, competition makes things better for us customers . Specifically the "ride quality" and "comfort" factors as that is more important to me in a continuously bumpy Jeep than handling.
Thanks GTO for your inputs on the suspension upgrade. Could you please help me understand the difference between AVO and ARC. I am confused and really wanna change it on my diesel beast.

I am sure I might be coming across as a reckless driver to many reading my post but to be honest I’ve driven it carefully and mostly with two-three people only. However, the roads in my area are below average, mostly broken Tarmac with potholes.

Whoa
This is over how many kilometers?
My Diesel Thar gives at best 14kmpl with cruise control and worst in city is 9-10 kmpl.

Just for comparison my other ride a 2021 Diesel Manual Compass FWD gives 14kmpl consistent on highway with about 100-110 kmph on speedo and about 12 kmpl in city.
