Since this is going to be a poplar accessory, M&M wants it to be as OEM as possible. Hence the testing

Wrong comparison!!

Please find below the correct one. There is just a 10mm increment in sidewall which isn't much at all. 30mm width increase is another matter along with the unsprung weight increase due to the heavy BFG tire. Those are more important points than sidewall.

My bad. Thanks for the correction

The increment is from an already high value. With such an upsizing, the handling can only get bad vis-a-vis the manners even with stock profile.

Thats correct. Do anyone have any idea about the weight difference between this BFG and the OE tire? TIA

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

I am planning to take delivery on 19th Nov, and wanted to tee-off everything in prep for the plan. So I got to my PDI in the dealer's yard today, and here are some observations...

The Thar allotted to me has #1798 as the Serial Number -
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-img_20201116_1134032.jpg

Going by the VIN, this Thar is manufactured in Oct 2020 -
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-img_20201116_1138272.jpg

These are the various QC/ PDI checks & sign-offs -
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-img_20201116_1153282.jpg

The Battery is made in Oct 2020 too -
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-img_20201116_1129011.jpg

Three of the 5 tyres were 35/20 (Aug last week), one was 31/20 (July last week) and the last was 32/20 (Aug first week).

So there were at least 1798 Thars made in or before October, and are reaching dealerships in Nov, going by the FF Date and U/C, PDI Dates

The ODO reads 13 KM -
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-img_20201116_1134222.jpg

There is only one "remote" key!!! The other is just a flippy key, without the remote! Not cool for a 16.5 Lakh vehicle, M&M!
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-img_20201116_1137322.jpg

The production version of the automatics indeed have non-Chrome gear and transfer-case shifters, while manuals have chrome rings on both the levers. Weird, but I am not too much into chrome. As long as these last, I am okay with it -
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-img_20201116_113327.jpg

This is the official tyre pressure guidance for both the variants -
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-img_20201116_1138112.jpg

While I have signed-off on the car and am preparing for delivery, I did notice two anomalies.

The hook part of the hood doesn't seem to be painted, not sure if other cars are also coming out of the assembly line like this -
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-img_20201116_113055.jpg

And part of the wheel-well cladding in the front-right seems to misaligned (compared to the right) -
Mahindra Thar : Official Review-img_20201116_115507.jpg

I have ordered the Rain Visor, Magnetic Sun Shades and Steering Wheel covers to be included while taking delivery. Front and Rear Mud Flaps, Door Sill Protector and Bushranger Dirt Blocka Mats are not in stock, and is expected next Monday - will get them during the first service (which might be around the same time ).

My next update will hopefully be an initial ownership report.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

I happened to read the rush lane page on the so called 2021 version of the Thar.

The changed grille and the 4x4 sticker at the rear can hardly qualify as an upgrade ?

Seems like a rushed job from them.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

It can’t qualify as an update for sure. My 2 cents on this, there has been criticism regarding the final design of the new Thar. So probably they might be upgrading the grill with a 7 slat retro Jeepish design. With the wide opening slat the inter cooler and radiator is exposed to plain sight as was the case with the previous gen Thar. Hence, they could be testing the vehicle with this regard Or following some standard protocol before bringing the update in the final product.

Jeep gurus in the community can throw some more light on the technicalities.

Saw this video regarding accessories from an owners perspective. The reverse camera is implemented very badly and feels cheap for an OEM approved accessory.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Even the mats look bad. For a car that’s of the high end trim , the mats look so out of place. Especially the one at the rear.

I’ll either get used to the bumpy ride (as I have with my ’97 Classic) or just drop the tyre pressure by 2 PSI in the city. I might also swap out the 18” rims for 16" ones for a cushier ride.

It is a full 10 years since I’m reviewing a test car that I’ve decided to buy. And it's always fun to review something interesting. After driving regular hatchbacks, sedans & crossovers week after week, we enjoy driving such "different" vehicles. 2020 sure has been a good year for enthusiasts = The Thar, Rapid / Polo TSIs, revv-hungry City, Octavia RS 245, Grand i10 / Aura 1.0 Turbos, well-mannered Creta 1.4 Turbo, the fast Duster Turbo, Superb 2.0 TSI & more. The best part is, we still have 2.5 months left in the year!

Saying goodbye to my Classic soon:

Congratulations to begin with, those words right there must have surely sold an additional few units for M&M, to those who were confused, coming from you after all I have finally booked my first proper 'Jeep', the Petrol LX MT after following off-road enthusiasts like you on this forum for several years.

On that note, any advice to the newbie off-roaders like us? I'm surely planning to change the wheels & tyres first to something slightly more aggressive looking (maybe 19" or 20" as it wont be a daily driver) yet put a more livable / comfortable AT tyres than stock. I'm considering the Yokos Geolander after reading here that you absolutely love them But given BF Goodrich and Cooper A/T tyres how'd you rate them in terms of on road comfort ? And any more mods to begin with, chief ?

Here's a tastefully done Thar by a modification studio down south

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

A youtuber has shared that Mahindra is sending out letters with Chocolates appreciating the people who have booked the Thar for their patience.

Good gesture and much needed to reduce cancellations, given the circumstances and delays.

But the same guy claims that Mahindra dealers are calling him to reconfirm that whether his booking decision is still solid - which might irritate people. Clearly dealers and Mahindra marketing team needs to sync up.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

I got my chocolates too and a lengthy test drive today sealed it for me. I did a 20km test drive of the manual variant although my booking was for the automatic. This test drive made it clear to me, “Thar is not for everyone”.

One high speed run on some undulated concrete patches made me say “I can’t live with the Thar”. I realize Thar is ok in the city and of course great on non-existent roads, but pretty poor on the highway.

I have initiated the cancellation. Bye bye Thar.

Here’s wishing all the new Thar owners a long and joyful ownership experience.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Thanks for sharing. I see yours is a Convertible top. Can we assume the hard top will add 25 kg or so? We are then getting close to 1800 KG - A lot of weight to lug around if people are using it as a daily driver for office commutes etc. Double the weight of Maruti Swift Desire Compact sedan, a common choice for commuters, which weighs 900 kg and has the same 4 m length! Thar is probably the heaviest sub 4 m vehicle by far.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Thar is ought to be heavy. No surprises here as its a body on frame system, additional 4x4 transfer case and also cater to the extra strengthening reqd for a offroader, bigger wheel and tyres, bigger engine.

In any case Dzire has no comparison to Thar in my view. As such just because Thar may be used as a daily drive (?) it shouldn't be compared to a monocoque vehicle.

More informed auto enthusiasts will agree.
