The dealer has a GT Plus Sport in Manual, cherry red for sale at around 20.3 lakhs (April pricing), but they could offer me only the DSG for test drive. I didn't know about the manual mode of the DSG version when i test drove the car.

Is the manual mode of the automatic a good version to drive around in the hills. My use case would be about 5-6 trips to the hills every year. Any drawbacks of the DSG (long term review), as I plan to keep the car with me for atleast 8-9 years.
Own the GT plus 2022 1.5 DSG - the DSG does have a manual mode but nothing comes close to the actual manual transmission for pure driver engagement and thrill. The DSG box is a boon in the city and can also be quite thrilling in the twisties. The DSG boxes are decently reliable and VW warranty also is quite decent. Using the paddles on the steering makes it more engaging when driving quick. XDS and TC on this car is decent and when u drive on twisties with ESC off its quite a hoot to drive.

In Virtus 1.5DSG, the M mode of the DSG works decently well but upshifts only happen in sequence - you can't go from gear 2 to gear 4 like in a manual synchromesh transmission. While downshifting, the TCU will downshift if the RPM falls sufficiently in that gear, so you can't stall the car :-)
The plus side is no clutch pedal use, so makes stop-go traffic a breeze. The M mode is decent, and the DSG allows you also to mix-and-match D/S with M actions.
An MT gearbox has its pluses (I drive an MT Superb), but you need to weigh your driving cycle and its vagaries.

Thanks a lot. Should I insist on testing a manual before opting for the car? Would testing a 1.0 TSI manual variant be enough?

If you can, test drive 1.5TSI manual in any trim. And then 1.5DSG in M mode of the gear lever. That'll give you relative feel since you seem to be focused on the drive experience.

They don't have any manual variant in the 1.5TSI segment. Hence, I could only test the 1.5 DSG. Would testing a 1.0TSI manual be anywhere close to similar to the 1.5TSI?

I own the 1.5 GT Manual. I have been a happy customer. But after 3 years of ownership, I have started to wonder if a DSG would have made more sense in the real world. The manual is great fun. No two ways about it. I still love shifting down a gear or two and flooring it. It still feels refreshingly quick as day one. But these moments have become rare due to my family joining me on most of my drives now or the lack of free highways or my evolved driving habits. Also in the city, the manual is inconvenient to use. With a longish clutch pedal travel and some jerkiness felt in 1-2 and 2-1 transitions. I now use the 2nd gear most of the time to crawl, go over bumps, and get out of slow moving traffic just to avoid the 1-2 transition. Luckily, the tractability of the Taigun helps me achieve this easily. May be these are my own problems not the car’s but this is how I feel after owning the manual for 3 years. Given the experience I have had and if I ever get a chance to pick one now, I would pick the DSG over the manual purely due to the hassle free “automatic” experience that the DSG offers.

Before buying 1.5 GT MT Sport in Mar, I also faced same issue in Pune. No dealer had 1.5 MT Taigun for Test drive. However they had 1.5 MT Virtus which they offered for test drive. Considering engine & gearbox in both is identical, check that option if available.

I have owned a Polo GT TSI (DSG) for 9 years and counting, and got a Taigun 1.5 DSG a year ago. As someone who was used to driving manuals prior, I can confidently tell you that the DSGs are as as good, sometimes even better than a human in ensuring you're at the right gear for the situation. The shifts are simply lightning fast.

I've driven a lot in the hills (steep ones in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka), and have always driven in D with a full load (4-5 passengers + luggage) - absolutely no problem. In fact, in my Taigun, I think I would have barely used the Sports mode 2-3 times, that too mainly just to experience it.

The DSG boxes are more reliable (even my Polo's runs strong without issues), and there are enough extended warranty options for added peace of mind. I would suggest take a test drive of both variants and take a call.

For me, personally, a DSG is > a manual at this stage - considering the convenience in traffic, and the driving experience it offers on highways/hills.

I'd like to request anyone who recently took delivery of a 1.5L DSG Sports Chrome DM me. I'm Interested in knowing the latest offers. I somehow feel I am not getting fair discounts.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun Review

Thanks a lot for all your opinions and ideas. I have decided to go ahead with the 1.5 TSI Manual. Finalized the booking and got the financing done as well. On road price, including their insurance of 1+3 and 4 years SVP, I am getting the GT Plus Sport model in Cherry Red at 20L. I think it also includes a basic accessory package.

Waiting to get clarity on the insurance. The salesperson had told me that they would try and match the best price from the market, failing which I could get it done myself. Tata AIG is offering 3+3 years with return to invoice and zero dep at around 75-76k. The 1+3 option is coming to around 36k. Any pointers here?

Also, I was thinking of getting the dashcam installed from the dealership, as it would ensure the warranty is maintained. They have quoted the price at 12.5k. Is the dashcam good enough?

Many congratulations on the upcoming purchase. 1.5 Manual is a delight to drive.
One pointer on the dashcam, please check thoroughly the specs and compare with other models available outside (70mai, ddpai, viofi etc.). As long as you connect the dashcam to your USB C port, there is no warranty issues and the USB port also switches off post engine shut down thereby removing any chance of battery drain.

Wishing you safe drives and many happy miles.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun Review

Sharing quick experience with EPC issue on my Taigun 1.0 AT (Oct 2022 mfg)

It's ~2.5 years old, about 20K KM done and one fine day, I see an engine check light start blinking. 5 mins and one rev up later, the EPC light comes on and the car loses the ability to do a proper pickup. Becomes extremely lethargic. I still need to take it out of my office's basement parking and I really struggle on the uphill, barely managing the first one and then building some speed before approaching the next few ramps.

Anyway - SC is quick to diagnose and resolve the issue. I leave my car on Day 1 evening, Day 2 afternoon they tell me an injector has misfired and will be replaced under warranty (with <1000 Rs needing to be paid by me for a spark plug). Day 3 early evening I am able to take it back with the replaced injector.

What I am left wondering is what I can do differently. I get my car fueled with only XP95, that too at a large, busy, reputed IOCL pump.

Any recommendations? I don't want to be stuck on a highway somewhere with another injector misfire at some point in the future.

Re: Volkswagen Taigun Review

Got my car delivered yesterday, 1.5 GT Sports Chrome in Lava Blue. I had booked the same on 19th May. There was one car in stock with them which was April manufactured. The entire process was extremely smooth and was handled very professionally by B.U. Bhandari. I did the PDI on May 24th by CARS24 since they now own Team-Bhp (I sold my previous car, Polo, also to them, even though a rival firm offered 2K more at the last minute. More on that in a separate thread) . There was a slight delay due to the BH registration process, which was slightly irritating. But overall, Happy with the whole process. I have taken the extended warranty as well as extended RSA covering up to 6 years.

The last time I bought a car, I was just a lurker on Team-bhp and not a member. By the time I became a member, the interest had worn off in writing an ownership report. Let me see if I can do it this time.

My first outing with VW was an absolute pleasure for 10 years, with not even a single situation where the Polo left me stranded. Hoping for a repeat performance with Taigun as well.

PS: Both my sister and I, living in different cities, took deliveries of VW Taigun, in the same color on the same day!

My brother purchased a VW Taigun 1.5 DSG Carbon Grey non-chrome edition in Nov 2024. He gave off his 2017 Honda City iVtec (run only for 30K KM) and got this.

The car is absolute fun to drive in city (we live in Chennai in OMR) and sails smoothly on National Highways. However, the following things irks us:
1. The night drives due to headlight issues. Cars coming in opposite direction switch on high beams and we are literally blinded. Once when on a trip it was raining badly and the road visibility was poor with the headlights on dark unlit highway roads. Unfortunately, we cannot change the low-powered projectors (without voiding warranty and significant cost. got a quote for 80K for replacement LED projectors).
2. Minor tik-tik sound (and mostly felt in feet on brake pedal) at low speeds (between D1-D2). SA said nothing to worry but nagging when driving. Anyone else faced this?

Will keep adding more on to this thread on the ownership.

In Chennai, if we can plan to have a Taigun owners meet, it would be fun outing for a weekend! (please let me know if this is a topic for a different thread)
