Re: Skoda Slavia Review

Hello everyone,

I am also a new owner of Slavia 1.0 AT Style Lava Blue MY24, and the car is just fabulous. It's only about 25 days old, and while planning to write a detailed post about my experience, I got up with the issue of the anti-theft alarm being triggered randomly.

This issue has forced me to write here urgently and seek support.

As mentioned by @AlokSharma and @SpikeSpiegel, I also faced the same issue four times.

My car is always parked in the basement parking of a housing society. The first time, the alarm was triggered at midnight, about 1:30 am, and the security guards rushed to my car, and the alarm went off automatically after a minute. The alarm again triggered in the morning at about 7:30 am, and this time, guards gave me a mobile call. I went to the car and checked everything, which was all normal. But the incident occurred the same night, right after I installed my dash camera and connected it to the front USB port. I doubted the dash camera connections and looked for any recording without a second thought. I found the camera had about 5 minutes of recording when the alarm was triggered. This means the camera got power sourced out of nowhere at midnight, along with the alarm trigger. How?

Then I read in this forum by someone that the front USB Type-C ports get power at random times, even when the car (and ignition) is off, and doors are locked. I already knew that the 12V socket was always ON, but I did realise that the front USB ports were also suspicious. The forum post suggested connecting the camera with the rear USB, which gets shut down after the ignition is OFF. I pulled the wile more and connected the camera to the rear USB ports.

After this, no alarm was seen for about ten days. I also ensure that I correctly turn off the ignition after parking and do not leave the car with the ignition on but just by triggering Auto Engine OFF.

But today, the alarm triggered again! Security guards called me, and I rushed to my parking. The alarm was already off when I reached it, and everything looked normal. I specifically noticed that the engine and ignition are OFF. Someone earlier doubted that the Auto OFF might trigger the alarm if the ignition was not left off while leaving the car. I checked it, and everything was properly off. I have no clue at all why it triggered again today!

I will try to reach out to SC and hear them out, but I doubt they will help without any significant proof.

Can anyone here please suggest what could be going wrong? I am now worried about the car triggering such a loud noise in society, disturbing huge families.

Thanks, Piyush.

So for my car the problem was with the Skoda connect OBD dongle. It has a software issue. The service centre has removed it and given to me. They acknowledged that one more car had faced a similar issue. They have informed Skoda and they will get a solution as a software update in a month or two where they will call us again and write that update into the dongle. It has been 15 days since the car had been to the service centre and now I haven't had a single incident of the anti theft alarm going off.

I too have a dashcam and I leave it connected to the 12 v charging port whenever the car is parked in public places. For overnight parking, I disconnect it from the 12 v charger. This is not the source of the problem. It is the dongle.

Hello,

I had a talk regarding this with the team leader directly at the showroom. There are multiple probabilities for the car alarm to go off but the primary two are EITHER a cat/rat/dog was crawling around motion sensors OR the dongle for SKODA Connect can be the culprit. In my case the car was parked in the garden area of the bungalow where cats always lurked around. Since coming back to my place, the car alarm never set off again abruptly. So I came to the conclusion that the dongle cannot be faulty in my car and it was the work of the feline creature. The SA told me that they are receiving complaints regarding similar incidents and in most of the cases, the dongle was at fault. He also told me that the company may be planning to update the dongle with a software and are advising customers to disconnect it till the resolution. You should pay your showroom a visit and get it clarified.

Regards

Thank you for this information. The alarm triggered twice last night, and luckily, I could hear it from my duct. As per your suggestion, I went to the car and pulled off the dongle.

But this time, I observed something around the dongle. When the alarm was triggered about ten days ago for the first few times, my dongle fell off the floormat within 1-2 days. It got loose, and the dongle fell, probably at the same time the theft alarm triggered a few hours ago. I went to the service centre, and they told me this was a design flaw and nothing could be done but re-push it. I came back home after fixing the dongle.

Now fast forward to yesterday night. When I went to remove the dongle as per the suggestion by @AlokSharma, I noticed that it was loosely connected and would have fallen with a few hours of driving (jerks).

Now, my thoughts are running around for a reason. Is the alarm triggered if the car feels the dongle is being tampered with, or did the connection get loose? I also think the alarm issue is happening only with a few owners, but should the consistency have been found if it were a mass software issue? Is it because the Style variant only gets the dongle, and not everyone's dongle is a loose fit?

Hey @SpikeSpiegel26

Your doubt also looks correct to me now! I have seen cats running around in my society's basement parking. I even found their footprints on my bonnet a few days ago! But do you know how sensors detect this motion but not human motion? After reading your message, I tried doing a lot of circus around the car, and the alarm didn't trigger. It's weird! Of course, I am planning to go to the service centre soon!

Thanks, Piyush.

Hi @MotorDev,

The exact same issue is with my new Slavia as well. The brakes have a cracky sound if I press a little hard. I also noticed that the sound only comes when the vehicle crawls. I could reproduce it multiple times from a standstill by lifting the brakes slightly to inch the car forward and then pressing them again.
I often thought the car had scabbed its belly or another vehicle in dense traffic.

I also showed this to the service centre twice, and both times, different technicians uttered the same words, "It's normal". I am not at all satisfied with this answer, and it's definitely not normal! But what to do?

Thanks, Piyush.

Hello,

Congratulations on your Slavia! I can understand how bothersome the brake noise can be. It seems to occur when applying the brakes while the car is moving at speeds around 40-60 km/h, planning to take it to the service centre next week. The positive note is that despite the noise, the brakes themselves seem to be working perfectly fine. Some BHPians suggested it might be due to dirt on the brakes or perhaps they need a bit of sanding. My impression is that the noise is originating from the rear drum brakes.

Re: Skoda Slavia Review

Finally closed on a Slavia 1.0 Ambition A/T for a family member. OTR Mumbai was 15.6L including 5th and 6th year warranty & Drive assure elite.

Thinking about swapping the stock rim/tyre set to the Vega style 17 inch alloys. What is the ideal tyre size 225/45/17? Does it make sense? Will the ride quality be unbearable? should I look at different tyre sizes?

The car will be driven within city limits.

Thanks in Advance.

I went to service center today and the service manager acknowledged that they have received an email from Skoda about 9 days ago, mentioning about the Anti Theft Alarm getting triggered. The mail says to remove the dongle and wait for software update.

@AlokSharma - you were right!

The service advisor removed the dongle from my car and gave it to me. He is expecting the software update to come somewhere in February 2024. Let's see!

I'm atleast satisfied that the car won't shout at midnight disturbing community.

Thanks, Piyush.

The incident which I am about to share started during my first service. The advisor told me that the clutch pedal was getting stuck midway. After a week of the car being left at Gurudev Vellore, they replaced the clutch master cylinder, and it was good to go.

After a few months, it happened again when my friend was driving the car. The pedal got stuck, he also panicked for it was something very new to him and he didn't know how to react. I told him to pull it back using his foot. Long story short, the car went back to Gurudev Vellore and after 4 to 5 months there, came back with a brand new (according to the service guy) modified gearbox and clutch. I was finally at peace, enjoying my car and damn, it happened again!
.
Ask them to check the flywheel. An unbalanced flywheel tends to mess up the master and slave cylinders. Happened on my Pajero sport may be similar on a petrol engine too.

Re: Skoda Slavia Review

Need advice !

Yesterday on my way back from Bangalore to Chennai, somewhere after Sriperumbudur at around 7PM I missed noticing a pothole in the middle of the new six lane highway due to the high beam glare of oncoming vehicles and ran over the same at 70-80kmph. Heard a huge heart breaking crunch from the front right tyre and thought to myself that the sidewall would have definitely bulged.

After reaching home I checked and there is definitely a sidewall bulge and a bad rubber blemish on the alloy at the point of impact.

Frequent travellers would know that the highway after Ranipet is just pathetic to say the least. I even travelled last week to Bangalore and returned without any issue. This time I was even more careful and yet this happened. Now I wanted advice regarding my options to change the tyre.

1. My local tyre guys says it’s okay to replace just one tyre as my car has run only 11k kms but I am against it and want to replace both tyres. Is my understanding correct or should I replace only 1 tyre ?

2. Slavia comes with a full size spare but the spare tyre is not CEAT but JK Tyre. Should I just buy one new JK tyre and get both tyres mounted on the front ? That way I have two new tyres in the front and I will use the left front CEAT as a spare.

3. If I am going with point no. 2, Is JK a good tyre to use in the front or should I get them fitted on the rear ?

4. Is it okay to use different brand tyres but similarly rated tyres on the front and rear axle ?

Any advice regarding this would be helpful.

Adding pictures below. The highlighted circle is where the bulge is on the tyre.

The scar on the alloy.

Single new tyre at the back will not cause any issue and you wouldn't notice any change in the driving characteristics as well. Just don't fit it in the front. The vehicle will start pulling to one side. Rotate the tyres and fit the new tyre at the back. Replacing two tyres for this IMO is not required and a waste of money.

Re: Your preferred suspension tune | Soft (comfortable) vs medium (balance) vs firm (sporty)

Hello Experts,

I had a Honda Jazz and it served me very well for the last 7 years. After riding my friend's scorpio classic for few times I was bit inclined to the kind of power it delivered. hence driving my Jazz was kind of boring and decide to replace it with a more powerful car.

After some research finally got a Skoda Slavia 1.5 DSG. But ever since I got it, my wife used to complain about the suspension as we were able to notice the thud sound when we go through some really rough patch or some pot holes. (The same stretch would be easily managed by Jazz without any discomfort to the passengers).

It's been three months since I got the salvia and more often we feel the suspension to be stiff. I didn't face any such issues during the test drives I had.

Now I am not sure if this is something unique to my car or is it something universal with all Slavia. Adding to this last week I encountered a breakdown situation as I got a warning signal to check the oil levels. Upon checking it is very very low and I had to tow down the vehicle and it is still in the service center.

Upon further enquiring Skoda guys admitted that it is an issue with oil seal and no external damage was there. hence they were sourcing that part to get it replaced.

In my entire 7 years ownership with Honda I have never visited the service center apart from the regular service. But with Skoda within 3 months I was left stranded in the road with my family and the towing vehicle came after 5 hours of raising the concern with Skoda.

This break down episode along with the uncomfortable suspension setup have dragged me to think if I should sell my 3 months old vehicle and get some peace of mind.

I would really appreciate if some one can shed some light here to help me make a good decision.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems with your Slavia. Despite the issues, the Slavia is a really good car. It's one of the best options you can find for under 25 lakhs. The 1.5L TSI engine is powerful. Test drive some other Slavias. The suspension might feel a bit stiff at first, but you'll get used to it, especially on the highway. Did you thoroughly check your car before buying it? If the issues continue after fixing, then you can think about selling it. Believe me, the Slavia is a fantastic car, and you might regret selling it.

Try reducing the tyre pressure a bit, go for like 30 PSI on all tyres, see how that feels for you. Slavia already has 16 inch wheels, so you don't have the option to downsize them. People with 17 inch wheels downsize to 16 or 15 to have a more comfortable ride.
