Re: Toyota Innova Hycross Review

Got our Hycross Hybrid 50k Kms service done a week ago when the odo was at 51,185 Kms and present odo as of today is 51,537 Kms in 17 months of ownership.

The bill we got was Rs.12.5k, wherein our chauffeur got the WA and WB from the ASC itself
apart from the usual oil change.

Last service was done in the month of Sep 2024 when the odo was at 40,627 Kms.

No complaints with the car so far and the brake pads are still running on stock despite crossing 50k Kms on the odo.

Did anyone change the brake pads on the Hycross?

Also, need to change the tyres as soon as it hits 60k Kms mark. Which tyres are the best and planning to go stock size again since its used by dad though I'd love to upsize to 235/55R17 or 225/60R17 but bit worried that FE will take a hit considering that its a Hybrid.

It’s due to the cabin pressure difference. Current jugaad is to open any window when they are closing the last door. Then the door will close properly with the slightest push.

Re: Toyota Innova Hycross Review

Update after 35,000kms on our Toyota Innova HyCross ZX(O)
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_6756.jpeg

It’s a Toyota, we are using the car everywhere, lending it to relatives when they need it, not babying the car over bad sections, using it like how a Toyota ought to be.
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_5045.jpeg

All services have been vanilla with just the oil, filters, wheel alignment and balancing. Toyota smiles package helps save costs here. With this package, you pay for current and next service together. The 30,000km and 40,000km services together cost Rs 21,000 upfront. That’s around Rs 10,500 per service. Strangely, Toyota offers only 2 wheels balancing with this package and the other 2 wheels would be balanced in the next service.
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_4132.jpeg

Off-late, I usually ask the service folks not to wash my car as they wash several cars without cleansing the cloth and when such a cloth comes in contact with bits like speedo, infotainment and sunfilm, it leaves scratches or swirl marks. I ask the service advisor to not touch the interiors if they are washing the car. I also leave a note just in case 🤓
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_3891.jpeg

Toyota Service was sweet enough to drop me back in the previous generation Camry. The Camry never impressed me by looks or interiors but what blew me away was the ride comfort. The low speed ride is cushy and a notch or two softer and more comfortable than HyCross. The current generation Camry is under consideration for a future purchase. Despite the softness, it handled so well without any roll discomfort. The latest platforms of Toyota seem to have mastered ride and handling balance for Indian / Asian roads.Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_2581.jpeg
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_2561.jpeg

Toyota had also displayed the technical demonstration module of the hybrid system. It was good to know what goes into the hybrid, how it works and the best way to adapt your driving to extract efficiency.
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_2579.jpeg
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_2578.jpeg

There is a clunk noise from the front right after the HyCross crosses a speed bump. I suspect it’s the lower arm or link rod. I’ll bring this to the notice of the road tester during the next service as I like to keep the service visits to a minimum (which is why you buy a Toyota).
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_0609.jpeg

HyCross has a large glass area including the panoramic roof. So a lot of heat gets in affecting the fuel efficiency of the hybrid. So it made total sense to get a sunfilm. I like sunfilm to be transparent. Not only for regulatory reasons but also for comfortable visibility during night driving.
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_6615.jpeg

Hence, I got the Solar Shield Platinum Teal 70 sunfilm after coming across a post on team-bhp on it. The installation was done at OCD, Hyderabad who do a great job with installations. Must admit that it is very effective in cutting out the heat. Total Solar Energy Rejection (TSER) is rated at 62% which is believable considering it cuts out heat better than 3M’s CR70. The problem with 3M is that it’s not at all scratch/swirl resistant and the installation is poor at 3M franchisees such that you are left with fine lines or marks in the film during installation.
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_6410.jpeg
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_6409.jpeg
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_6750.jpeg

Other sunfilm that impressed me was Garware’s artic cool shield which is also transparent and in my opinion the most value for money sunfilm. Our Ertiga has it and it costs 30-40% lesser than Platinum Teal 70.
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_6758.jpeg

The Good Year Assurance Triple Max 2 tyres have been decent, no issues with them except high speed braking. These tyres squeal to glory. Also the lower profile hurts the ride in some scenarios, otherwise the HyCross is pliant in most roads, the side to side movement is limited and makes the passengers feel comfortable even after a 6 hr journey. The next upsize planned is 235/50 R18 for a better low speed ride due to the added sidewall and 10mm wider footprint for better braking.

Fuel efficiency varies between 14-18 kpl depending on the style of driving and I’m quite happy with it. Running costs are 40% lower compared to Endeavour and Crysta. What’s more, the low speed throttle response is instantaneous in the hybrid.

The Hybrid is a hit with the family members. They appreciate the noiseless nature at parking speeds and the refinement on the move. You don’t have footwell vibrations or diesel clatter which you experience in the Crysta.
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_4827.jpeg

One more difference I noticed in the G & V variants over Z is the seat bolstering. The defined bolstering in the Z holds you well providing better support and the ottoman seats are soothing to use after a couple of hours into the journey making long distances effortless.
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_6757.jpeg

I don’t believe in PPFs as they make the car plasticky to touch and finishing at the corners, installation marks or bubbles are an eye sore. In our Endeavour, 3M’s door edge PPF melted in 5 years and got stuck to the paint. Now removing it would peel off the paint too.
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_6759.jpeg

Instead, I got ceramic done for Rs 30,000 at a known detailer who ensures my cars get the best treatment. Being a bhpian and a car enthusiast helps. This ceramic is a 3-layer and would last 3 years in the real world as per his claim. That’s about Rs 10,000 a year to make the car look gleaming and protect the paintwork over time.
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_4088.jpeg
Toyota Innova Hycross Review-img_6760.jpeg

While the original Innova or Innova Crysta were and are always known to be the go to chauffeur driven vehicles, this one is a pleasant car to drive and to be driven in, the Toyota Innova HyCross.

Re: Toyota Innova Hycross Review

Update:

My folks did a trip of nearly 1100 Kms (1080 Kms to be precise) to Coastal Andhra for visiting temples on Friday morning and came back home by today early morning 4am.

People travelled were 3 along with chauffeur.

Also, the car gave an FE of 17.2 Kmpl before the refuel at Gannavaram, which is after Vijayawada, in AP.

Here is how my folks got this FE:

Filled the fuel at Siddipet, 115 Kms from home, when dad went there for some work, on Wednesday (08/01/2025) and next day (09/01/2025), the car was driven within the city for 90 Kms and on Friday (10/01/2025), they headed to the destination when the DTE was 285 Kms or something. And for the fuel, my dad paid Rs.3000, which translated to 27.9l while the fuel price per liter was around Rs.107.5.

Odo before start was 51,619 Kms and post the trip, the odo stands at 52,695 Kms.

Hi, can you share the post your are referring to and the cost you incurred? I assume you have installed the same film all over- front/rear windshields, all windows and sunroof(?)

The correct tyres size for upsizing is 235/55/R17 which makes a difference of a mere 0.07% in overall circumference & Ground clearance also will remain the same as on stock tyres.
How will this upgrade affect the handling and the ride comfort? Is this going to offer better handling by compromising on the ride comfort?

Sure, here is the link - https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/modif...s-chennai.html (Why I spent Rs 40,000 on Sunfilm at Speedfreaks, Chennai)

I got the film installed covering all the glass area including sunroof and front windshield. Since the HyCross is a keeper, I wanted to get the best sunfilm. The total price I paid was Rs 40,000/- in 2023 summer. I got them installed at Obsessive Compulsive Detailing (OCD), Hyderabad as they do a fine job. Garware’s artic cool shield which is as good would cost about 30% lesser.

The ceramic was done at KForce, ECIL, Hyderabad for Rs 30,000/-. I was told they tested several ceramic solutions and narrowed down to this formulation for long lasting durability. Along with it, I also got the under body coating and silencer coating which costed Rs 8750/-. For this, the underbody was washed, dried and then the wheel arch liners were removed to spray the anti-rust and silencer coatings.

Re: Toyota Innova Hycross Review

Going through quite a dilemma right now. I am in the market for a new car and after multiple test drives have zeroed in on two options - the Hycross and Tata Safari. Looking for a seven seater, most highway drives would be four people with the last row folded for luggage.

Looking at the variants that I have in mind, there is a significant cost difference of close to 5L and this is big money. Waiting period is not an issue, I am ready to wait it out if required.

Sometimes I am thinking choose the Hycross - Toyota reliability which means peace of mind, future proof (petrol + hybrid) - never know what the future of diesel is going to be, better FE and running costs, cannot beat the space of the Hycross and love the way the car looks from the outside. 5L is a little steep but I always keep my cars for a long time and if I plan to keep this for 10 years, it should be alright to start a little steep now.

On the other hand I am thinking - love the Safari inside out especially the interiors are fantastic, feels really premium and that infotainment screen coupled with camera quality, just wow! Love the road presence and seating position as well. Also keep hearing about poor headlights on the Hycross which makes me think twice.

It's a tough call to make - any of you went through similar dilemmas before taking the plunge?

I am confused after reading all of what you've written. You're open to a TATA vehicle, knowing that it is far from perfect. However, weak head lights on the Hycross is sufficient enough to cloud your decision.

I have no first hand experience with either vehicle. What I will say is that you'll get a lot more long term dependability with a Toyota. 5l over the Safari in my view is pocket change. You'll likely recover some of that when you get bored of your Hycross for not breaking down and when you decide to sell it.

Diesel is on its way out as far as personal transportation goes. Stick to a Hybrid or wait till a 7 seat EV rolls out. Will likely cost more than a Hycross though.

You have a wealth of information on this very thread about what the Hycross does well and doesn't do so well. From everything that I've read so far, its only the interior that has not lived up to the price tag. Everything else has lived up to the iconic Innova brand name. That is, a dependable and comfortable family hauler.

Thank you for your response. Well certainly weak headlights plus the average interiors were factors playing on my mind.

A lot of times it's easier to make a decision when you look at things from a distance and they all seem very black and white but when you have to make a decision for yourself and especially one where big bucks are involved, it can lead to a lot of doubts and questions creeping up before you pull the trigger. I am not surprised that you found my dilemma confusing

While 5L is still a significant amount the more I think, it probably would be worth the peace of mind in the long term. I think I have almost made my mind to go ahead with the Hycross with the biggest punt on reliability and having a future proof car.

10K Kms Service Experience: May be useful for Pune folks.

I went in for 10K Km service. I have 1 major issue, that the DVR installed by Sonak Toyota during purchase of vehicle stopped working. I had visited already once during September 2024 to show this to technician there, they made it work and informed about the loose connection but to my utter disappointment it stopped working after a month and in between also it was coming and going. Sometimes not even recording the scenes outside.

For 10K Kms service, I took appointment through i connect app. This time i choose Sonak Toyota Bavdhan Pune, which is 35 Kms away from my home (the first service was done at Sarayu Toyota Bhosari PCMC, which is closer to my home) especially to show the faulty DVR. The app was showing appointments starting from 7am, but i booked for 9.15am.

Reached at 9am. The place was deserted, just few fans were roaring. Waited till 9.30am and SA was assigned. The delivery time informed was 11am. An estimate of 8K was given. There was a sign which says VIP Lounge but they said it was not available to use due to some WIP. I had a tough time to do office meetings amongst the noise. There was small place to sit from where one can see service bay and witness one's car getting serviced. I just landed there to enjoy the sight.

The car was finally handed over at 1.10PM with 7.7K INR bill. I choose the AC cleaning because i was getting foul smell from AC. This has inflated this final bill. The cash counter had an amazing slogan by their CEO- 'Speed is the new currency', Very inspiring words but lets hope they will follow those at their dealership. Personally i was in no hurry but lets not give a delivery time of 11 when you can only deliver after additional 2 hours.

The service was straight forward and most of the work was done in 30 minutes in front of my eyes- Brake cleaning, Oil change, filter change, spray all over the door beadings etc. The DVR checking, washing have taken more time.

Biggest disappointment: The dealership could not find a fault why the DVR was not working. They said they do not have another DVR to check if the installed DVR is kaput or not. So much so for the competence. The DVR is in warranty and they promised to change the same. I have to re-visit and its for 3rd time. Car is off course reliable so far but not the DVR accessory.

Now the difference between Two dealership (Sarayu and Sonak):

1. Sonak has better infrastructure, newer building and open space. Sarayu is also big but not as spacious as Sonak. Overall vibe (due to openness of space) at Sonak was better.

2.Sarayu dealership has a nice lounge where one can do their work while waiting. The people were more eager to give better experience to customer. They frequently ask customers for water, tea coffee. Sonak has none of these, they not even asked for water let alone tea or coffee. Although i was loaded with my own stuff as always.

3. App tracking was not updated at all during this 10K service at Sonak but during 1st service at Sarayu, the application was updated at real time and provide information on what is happening with the car.

4. The cleaning of interior and exterior was by far better at Sarayu Toyota. Full marks to them.

Would i visit Sonak again in future for service: No. But i had to, one more time to fix the DVR. Sarayu is close to my house, has better waiting area and overall provided better service experience.

Some pictures.

Reinstalled the wheel with all nuts checked (Poke-Yoke):

Done was worked in 30 minutes:

Wheel alignment and balancing was done at Darshan tyres Chinchwad at 750INR:

Re: Toyota Innova Hycross Review

I have a question for users of the 7 seater variants. If you have the third row folded down to keep luggage does it hamper the available space in the second row? Are you still able to recline the captain seats and have enough leg room to use the ottomans with the third seat folded?

62% TSER of Solar Shield is impressive for a 70% VTL transparent film. Quick googling shows that arctic cool is a metallic+dyed film with 50% TSER. So, going by on paper specs, it will pass almost 1/3rd more heat into the cabin 38% (100-62) vs 50% which should be a significant difference. Being metallic+dye film, it will also have other cons like fading/discoloring in long run, obstruction to RFID/mobile signals.

I had inquired today at a detailing shop in my area, he offered a 70% visibility ceramic film with 50% TSER and quoted 19k for the whole car excluding sunroof. Their brand name is carzspa, not sure how trustworthy they are?

He said that sun films don't stick to sunroofs, but couldn't provide a convincing reasoning. I had heard similar thing from another person earlier. Is it true that sunfilms can't be installed on sunroofs? or they are just trying to sell PPF for it to be applied from outside (on top)? I would appreciate if anybody throws some light on this.

This doesn't answer your question completely, but this is what I remember from a couple of long drives a while ago when I had to fold rear seats to accommodate luggage. Middle seats can be slid all the way back, and can even be reclined to a comfortable angle. But I didn't recline it too much since it seemed to touch and exert undue pressure against folded rear seats, so didn't risk damaging either of them.

Short answer YES.

Now when the captain seats are at farthest position (towards 3rd seat) then folding the 3rd seat is little difficult, as the 3rd seat headrest will hit the captain seat. Now one need to push captain seat little ahead (towards driver), fold the 3rd seat and then one can use full functions of captain seats (with Ottoman).
