Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Looks like Thar updated few colors in the RWD guise even if you get an AX.
And the Everest white is available from the LX guise in RWD.

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Hi BHPians, I am planning to book a Thar D LX MT - Red Rage here in Bangalore. I have come to know that there is a cash discount ongoing, as well as the delivery will be done in 4 weeks. Need a few suggestions regarding the same:

1. Any reliable accessories dealer in Bangalore (for aftermarket accessories)?

2. Recommended Mahindra Standard Accessories? (planning to get Reverse Camera, Rear Armrests, Seat Covers and Sun Shade from showroom itself, any additions/deletions)?

3. Recommendations on halogen bulbs (planning to keep stock headlamps, looking to change only the bulbs)

4. Any other essential accessories?

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Wireless Android Auto

The wired Android auto in my Thar RWD was working just fine. Only the original cable that comes with the charger seems to work and they last just a little under a year. I was on my second cable already and it was beginning to fray. The phone being charged continuously was also a concern.

While browsing through Amazon,I saw this offer for Carlinkit 5.0 A2A for Rs.3500 only. Ordered it and it was delivered today. Connection takes a minute and is very seamless. I should have done this eons ago ,I feel.

Cheers

Everest, My White Mahindra Thar 1.5L Diesel RWD | Initial Ownership Review

Mahindra Thar RWD 1.5 Diesel Ownership Review: "Everest"

Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review-img_1234.jpeg

Introduction

I’ve been a fanboy of the Mahindra Thar ever since it first launched in 2010. From the moment I saw its rugged, two-door Jeep-style design, I knew I wanted one. Fast forward to June this year and that dream finally became a reality when I brought home my very own 2024 Mahindra Thar RWD 1.5, which I named “Everest.” Here’s my honest take after 3000km of driving this beauty.

Exterior Design
What I love most about the Thar is its undeniable sexiness. The two-door design, the classic Mahindra front grille, and the Everest White colour make “Everest” a true head-turner. Every time I see it parked, I can’t help but smile. There’s something about the Thar’s rugged vibe that sets it apart from everything else on the road.

What I Love:
• Iconic Jeep-style design that screams adventure
• Everest White paint job that gives it a clean yet tough look
• Rugged, muscular stance

Minor Gripes:
• As much as I love its bulky stance, manoeuvring it in tight city parking can be a challenge

Interior & Comfort
The interior of “Everest” is pretty much what I expected: rugged and functional, just like I like it. It’s not about luxury in here, it’s about durability. The black-and-grey theme complements the adventurous spirit of the Thar perfectly, and the high seating position gives you that commanding view of the road.

What I Love:
• The no-nonsense, easy-to-clean interior—perfect for when I take it off the beaten path
• High seating that gives me a real king-of-the-road feeling
• The infotainment system with Apple Carplay is decent for me and get’s the job done for now, may upgrade it in future to a bigger screen

Minor Gripes:
• It’s not the most spacious cabin, especially with the limited boot space when the rear seats are up. But hey, that’s the price you pay for this compact design!

Performance & Engine
Now, let’s talk about what matters—the driving experience. The 1.5L diesel engine in this RWD Thar has been a solid performer. Sure, it’s not the 4x4 variant that the purists go for, but for my mix of city driving and occasional adventure trips, it more than holds its own.

What I Love:
• That low-end torque is great for city driving, and it pulls away smoothly
• Surprisingly decent fuel efficiency—I’ve been getting around 14.5 km/l in the City & around 17.5 km/l on highways.
• The RWD adds a bit of fun when you’re taking it on loose gravel or dirt roads

Minor Gripes:
• If I’m being honest, part of me still wishes I had gone for the full-blown 4x4 experience. But for now, the RWD fits my needs perfectly.

Ride & Handling
For a rugged SUV, the ride quality in “Everest” is impressive. It’s no luxury sedan, but it handles rough roads well, and the suspension does a good job of smoothing out bumps. You feel like you’re driving a true-blue SUV, with all the thrills (and occasional bounciness) that come with it. But I’m planning to upgrade to Toughdog suspension in future.

What I Love:
• The way it handles potholes and uneven roads—it just powers through without breaking a sweat
• Light steering that makes it surprisingly easy to drive in city traffic.

Minor Gripes:
• There’s a bit of body roll when cornering at speed, but that’s to be expected with this kind of vehicle.

Off-Roading & Adventure Potential
Okay, I’ll admit it—the Thar’s rugged look and off-road vibe are what made me fall in love with it back in 2010. While “Everest” is an RWD variant, I’ve still managed to take it on some light off-road trails, and it has been an absolute blast.

What I Love:
• The high-ground clearance gives me the confidence to take on dirt roads and steep slopes
• Rear-wheel drive is still fun for adventure seekers like me, even without the 4x4
Minor Gripes:
• As a true fan, part of me can’t help but wonder what the full off-roading experience would be like in a 4x4

Features & Technology
Let’s be honest—the Thar isn’t known for its high-end tech, but it has enough to keep you comfortable and connected. The touchscreen infotainment system is intuitive, and pairing it with my phone is a breeze.

What I Love:
• 7-inch touchscreen with seamless smartphone integration
• Useful features like cruise control and rear parking sensors
• Steering-mounted controls make life easier

Minor Gripes:
• A bit more tech wouldn’t hurt, like automatic climate control or additional safety features

Ownership Experience

Owning “Everest” has been a dream come true. From the moment I brought it home, it’s been nothing short of awesome. Driving this iconic SUV in the city gets a lot of attention, and it’s always an adventure when I take it out on weekends.
What I Love:
• Decent fuel efficiency for a vehicle this size I’m getting around 14.5 km/l)
• Servicing has been smooth so far—Mahindra’s service centres in Bengaluru have been great.

Minor Gripes:
• None major, though the upkeep can get pricey if you start customizing heavily (which I plan to do)

Conclusion
Owning a Mahindra Thar has been on my bucket list for years, and “Everest” has lived up to all my expectations. Whether it’s for the daily commute, weekend road trips, or just showing off that classic Jeep-style design, I couldn’t be happier. The Thar’s rugged charm and its practicality in the RWD version make it the perfect choice for someone like me—a long-time fanboy of this iconic SUV.

Final Ratings (out of 5):
• Exterior: 5
• Interior Comfort: 3.5
• Performance: 4
• Off-Road Ability (RWD): 3
• Features & Tech: 3.5
• Value for Money: 4.5

Congratulations on your toy! This post comes right at the time when I've booked the same configuration (LX D 2WD MT) albeit in different shade (Red Rage)

If I was able to guess it correctly, your dealership looks like PPS Mahindra Indiranagar. I've booked mine as well from same dealership, would like to know your PDI and delivery experience and any points to keep in mind

Cheers!

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Nice!! Congratulations on conquering 'Everest'. Nice to know that you are enjoying the experience and also getting very good FE (that too for Bangalore with its notorious traffic) with your Thar.

Refreshing to see a positive thread on the Thar, since the Thar Roxx has stolen the spotlight and almost everyone finds the 5-door Thar to be much improved over the 3-door Thar.

Wishing you many more miles of happiness

Congratulations on getting home your Everest. It looks smashing. White Thars do grab a lot of attention on the road as they are not common sight.

The 1.5 diesel engine is a gem and is very tractable. I had a blast in the diesel XUV300 when I drove it all the way to Ladakh. It has enough punch and will be efficient at the same time.

You should now start the mods on your beast

If you need any inspiration you can check out my ownership thread. My Rex is a white 4x4 petrol AT . I have listed all the mods done there :

Rex my white Thar petrol 4x4 (My 2023 Mahindra Thar 4x4 Petrol AT Hard-Top Ownership Review | Rex | EDIT: 1 year, 17,000 km up!)

Wish you many happy miles and smiles with your Everest. And welcome to the Thar club

Thank you! Congratulations on booking your Thar as well—it’s an awesome choice, and Red Rage is such a bold color!

And yes, you guessed it right, I did get mine from PPS Mahindra Indiranagar. The PDI experience was smooth, and the staff was quite helpful throughout the process. A couple of points I kept in mind during PDI:
  1. Check for scratches or dents - make sure to examine the paintwork thoroughly.
  2. Check all electronics - especially the infotainment system, windows, lights, etc.
  3. Tire condition and pressure - ensure they are aligned and inflated correctly.
  4. Test drive before final delivery - to make sure everything feels smooth.

I took a printout of PDI Checklist from Team-BHP and tried to check as many parameters as possible, Also please do check if your car is not titled on right side, few batches of Thar RWD have this defect from company.

The delivery experience was great as well—quick and well organized. I’d suggest you maintain clear communication with your sales advisor for any updates or requests.

Hope your delivery process goes just as smoothly! Feel free to ask if you have more questions.

Cheers!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome and your kind words! I’ve actually gone through your ownership thread countless times before taking delivery—it was a huge part of my decision-making process. Your Thar "Rex" is a masterpiece, and the mods you’ve done are nothing short of exceptional.

I’m excited to start my own mod journey in phases over the years, taking inspiration from your thoughtful upgrades. It’s always great to connect with fellow enthusiasts who truly appreciate the beauty and potential of the Thar.

Looking forward to many memorable miles and adventures ahead. Thrilled to be part of the Thar family!

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Congrats Nayan! Your Thar looks sexy! Love Thar in this shade.
Nothing comes close to Thar - it really has OG vibes (like the old classic).

It was only after I saw a Roxx on the road made me believe that Thar's grille does not need any replacement. Do upgrade to a better wheel cladding, white Thar stands out in that.

Congrats on the car and I cant agree more, this is such a surprise, for such a large car, with an even lighter foot, you get hatchback rivaling fuel efficiency.

Ive run around 10k km in the last 8 months. i really wish Mahindra gave an auto box with this!

Thanks! I'm really glad you like the Thar, especially in this shade! I agree, it totally gives off those OG vibes.

Thar Roxx is a beast on the road, for sure. And yeah, I’ve been thinking about upgrading the wheel cladding—it would definitely add to the look, especially on a white Thar. Thanks for the suggestion!

23,000 km Update

I had booked the RWD Thar Diesel on the day it was launched and got delivery in a couple of months.

It has given me immense pleasure and joy over the last 16 and a bit months.

Nothing to gripe about for me .

I have gone for the AVO suspension, redid the music system, got a 3M ceramic coating done, seat overs upgrade, wireless Android auto provisioning done.

I had upgraded the headlights and fog lights as well

I get about 16 kmpl average as per my fuel records and 17 as per my MID.

I am very happy with the Thar.

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Thar comes Home - Thar RWD LX D MT

After pondering over the decision for almost a year, I took the chance and booked Thar RWD - LX Diesel, Red Rage on 24th September. Got a nice cash discount of 1.5 Lacs on Ex-showroom price, along with exchange bonus and free accessories in the deal

SA informed that the allocation and payment process shall take 5-7 days, and i decided to take the delivery on Dusshera. Kudos to the shoe, they kept me in the loop for everything and even arranged a PDI at their yard, which was a good 25 kms away

Long story short, payment done, registration done and the day finally comes - I was about to own my very own thar

Delivery process was smooth, got a complimentary gift box from the showroom

Accesories from Showroom
  • Rear Armrest
    Front and Rear Sunshade
    Seat Covers
    Reverse Camera
    Mudflaps

Accesories from Outside
  • 7D mats
    Steering Leather Wrapping
    Front Armrest

Have driven the Thar for only around 100 kms and I can't help but smile every time i get behind the wheel. Looking forward to witnessing many memorable moments with my thar
