Sorry if I wasn’t clear, I was talking about the issue with the tyre rubbing the cladding at full lock.

Yeah, turns out that camber adjustment was off. I suspect when the alloy inner scrubbed with brake calliper housing, it caused the wheel assembly to move off a bit. I don't think it will come wrong from the factory.

I sent the car back to the tyre shop and he adjusted and it's now perfect. The difference as I observed here, is corrected now.

PPF is not required for a car like Thar as per my perspective. Ceramic coating is debatable as it has to be maintained but the additional coating would protect paint layer from swirl marks and bird dropping.

I would suggest you to drive the Roxx as-is for 2-3 months and based on your driving and city conditions you can take a call later to go for ceramic coating or PPF. If you decide to go with PPF, then put PPF only on front bonnet to prevent chipping from stones flying from leading vehicle on highways.

I considered this and was told by the detailer to avoid this approach as it will clearly show a difference in colour / shade between the bonnet and other parts of the car without PPF.

I encountered an issue with the boot door. The boot was fully loaded in our recent long trip. I was able to comfortably close the boot door. After a while when I had to open the door, it did not open. The latch was lose, but the door did not open. After we reached home, I folded the back seat and unloaded all the luggage through the back door. I tried opening the boot door, still it did not open. The next day, when I tried again, it opened. Don't know what could be the reason. Has anyone faced this issue?

I did not do PPF or ceramic coating. I bought 3M ceramic coating paste for 900 rupees and applied myself. The car looks shining. It took about an hour to apply coating and rub it off. Make sure you wash the car properly before applying the ceramic coating. It is advisable to apply the coating in the shade, probably in the evening after the sun sets or do it indoors.

Thar Roxx test drive with Mahindra Development Engineer

I went for the test drive of the Mahindra Thar Roxx (AX7 D MT), I really wanted to find out what the buzz is all about. Me and my school friends decided to spend our Sunday with the car, we all live in different parts of the city and we decided to meet at Mahindra. For reference, we all are driving enthusiasts and we love spending time behind the steering wheel. I drive a Skoda Rapid DSG, my friend Ali drives a Ford Fusion + diesel (it has done 2L kms and he has maintained it so well) and the other friend Ashish drives a Creta OG & 3XO. We took turns to drive the car and we all had almost the same opinion on the drive experience.

Likes:
  • Road presence, there’s nothing like the Thar, looks menacing on the road.
  • Interior quality is very good, looks modern and luxurious
  • Practicality over the 3 door thar
  • You can have all the features you want in a modern car
  • Mahindra has better touch points across India, you will find a Mahindra dealer even in small cities
  • Good glass area, the car doesn’t feel claustrophobic
  • Clutch and gearbox was easy to use, gone are the days of long throws of Scorpio
  • Electronic steering is city friendly
  • Turbo lag is well masked, the Mhawk offers great drivability

Dislikes:
  • If you are after 2WD variant & want a family car, just go for XUV700, it’s a far superior and more comfortable car. If you are looking for 4x4, then the Thar Roxx makes sense.
  • The ride is still choppy, you will feel the road, even small undulations unsettle the car or rather the Thar
  • I was driving at 80kmph over my regular commuting route & there’s a dip in a flyover, the rear went hell loose and my friend Ashish bumped his hand
  • High speed direction changes are best avoided, it lacks that confidence and has lot of body roll as expected from a tall car
  • I’m sure I would get motion sickness if I spend too much time in the rear seat
  • I don’t know why but somehow I felt that both the front & rear seats lack underthigh support.
  • There’s massive nose diving under hard braking
  • I understand it’s a ladder on frame truck so I can’t expect much in terms of driving dynamics.
  • Engine is tractable but it doesn’t offer that pushed into the seat feeling as the numbers suggest
I took a re-test drive of the Mahindra Thar Roxx with an engineer from Mahindra:

I wanted to share an interesting anecdote with fellow enthusiasts. The day is 31st December & I’m at my home chilling with my family, my phone rang I couldn’t receive it, it was from my close friend. An hour later, my phone rang again and it was from Mahindra, I expected it to be some sales call, picked up the call & the person on the other side says that someone from “Mahindra Chennai plant wants to meet you”. I was absolutely clueless, on further enquiry, he told me that this is regarding the test drive I did on 6th October 2024 and the Team-BHP post. I immediately called my friend and came to know that the Mahindra team has been trying to reach me from quite some time.

On 6th October, me & my 2 friends did the test drive of the Thar Roxx, the driving license submitted was of my friend Ashish who owns a 3XO, they reached Ashish for my contacts & he was on a trip, so he asked them to connect with another friend who owns a 3XO too, since we are not in contact from quite some time so he gave them the contact of my 3rd friend Ali & he finally shared my contact with them. I can totally understand that it’s difficult for anyone to reach one on TeamBHP directly, so they had to do a lot of efforts.

The meeting was scheduled for 4PM & the Mahindra dealer is near to my home, but I drove 30 kms to pick my friend Ali to the other side of the town & then again drove back to Mahindra dealer, because, we both did the test drive together, so I wanted him to be with me this time too. We both reached the showroom and we were taken to their conference room & there we met Mr Gautam, Mahindra Development Engineer, all the way from Chennai. I was still not sure what to expect, my first question to him was what brings him here?

So, it happens that the Mr Gautam is part of the product development & engineering team and he was involved in the development of the Thar Roxx & it’s testing. They have extensively done the testing on different parts of India & they look forward to take further cues from the experiences, feedbacks which may differ from their observations & findings. He read my post on TeamBHP regarding the above mentioned test drive & he wanted to meet us for further feedback. He came all the way from Chennai to discuss our experience & take further feedback, I was blown away by the efforts the team Mahindra is putting to listen to their customers & working for further improvements. We immediately got down to business & we discussed everything right from the product development to testing to competition & everything in between. The discussion was so intellectually enriching for me to learn so much about the product, the engineering went behind it from someone who himself has worked on its development. We discussed the above mentioned likes & dislikes one by one and Mr Gautam made it very clear in the beginning that he is not here to change our minds or anything, he just wanted to have a discussion on our experience & to share more about the functioning & behaviour of the Thar Roxx.

After the intense discussion, we decided to go on the test drive again, on the same route & with Mr Gautam behind the wheels. The car was the same, Thar Roxx MT D, we were 4 on-board, Mr Gautam, Mahindra regional head, me & my friend. We tried to create the same test driving scenario as the last one to compare the dynamics of the vehicle & our experience. Likes remains the same as it was before, there are a couple of points I would like to mention regarding the dislikes.
  • We all agreed that the chassis construction plays a big role & how a monocoque and a ladder frame behave differently on the same driving conditions
  • Thar Roxx being a top heavy vehicle with ladder frame chassis won’t ride as flat as an XUV700 in highways, until & unless it is equipped with electric dampers
  • We drove on the same dip in the flyover at the speed of 85kmph, there’s vertical movements like it was before but that’s how the car is supposed to behave because they need to have a balance between the on-road & offroad capabilities, there will be some trade offs for sure
  • In our previous drive, my friend Ali did a lane change & we felt the body roll, well this time, Mr Gautam did the lane change at much higher speed, rather aggressively & there was body roll as expected from a tall vehicle but what’s impressive was that the car gained the composure immediately, there was no continuation of lateral body movements, you driving straight, perform a sudden lane change, there are movements during the lane change & the moment you finish the manoeuvre, the car is straight like arrow, that’s an engineering feat as to how beautifully it controlled the body from further movements.
  • This was something we didn’t experience the last time because we didn’t push the car to the limits & the hint of body roll made us lose the confidence on the car, but the reality is, it has been engineered to handle a lot more, it’s just you have to get beyond that mental block & the Thar Roxx can do fun things too in a controlled manner
  • Next up, we reached an enclosed area and took a 90 degree long sweeping curve at the speed of 80kmph, I was sceptical initially because the moment the car entered the left hand curve, the car tilted slightly towards the right but that’s it, I was expecting a lot of body roll but again, the car got the composure back and it stayed flat though out the long 90 degree curve, I was honestly impressed with the suspension & the stability on offer. Doing something similar on the Thar 3 door or old Bolero or old Scorpio is unimaginable, Mahindra has come a long way.

We returned to the showroom and had a nice chat with the gentleman, well, he drives a Rapid too & he totally understands my perspective of cars, their dynamics, handling etc. He was open to staying in Raipur for a day more if we further wanted to understand more about the vehicles or wanted to experience other vehicles or had any other doubts, which I politely declined because it would have been wrong at our end to ask someone to stay in our city that too on new year’s eve, away from the family. We had a great time with the team Mahindra at Raipur, I never expected them to send an engineer all the way to small city like Raipur to take on the product feedback. Since we had the opportunity, I have friends who own Mahindras, so I shared the service concerns with him and other areas of improvements which Mahindra would want to look into. All in all, it was a great way to end my 2024 and I am thankful to them for taking inputs from us normal people, I’m sure their knowledge & experience is much more than us but still they chose to hear us, such positive approach & small gestures is what makes a brand. It was a great experience for me & my friend to learn so much about the cars technically, it was an evening well spent. Looking forward to meeting them soon at their Chennai plant this year.

The only picture I could capture

P.S. This goes on to show how closely our forum is being monitored by the manufacturers & big thanks to TeamBhp, without it, I wouldn’t have experienced any of these in tier 2 city like Raipur.

This is really good to hear to see an OEM go to such lengths to do such things. Also makes sense, because I think this thread in recent times has been the most busiest too.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Curious to know if they have started the production of 2025 cars yet. Or are you going with a car manufactured in 2024?

Thanks, I had sent my car for balancing and alignment two days back. I was told that the alignment was off, and post that the car seems to be accelerating more freely. Wondering if that has something to do with the lower than average FE I was getting. Also now I have the same issue with the tyre rubbing the cladding(?) at full right lock when reversing. Anyone has any suggestions?

I cannot say about acceleration, but you should check the camber adjustment. Maybe a better place? But why did you send it for alignment so soon?

Yes, should have clarified that, was facing two issues. Slight steering vibrations above the speed of 100kmph but not always. And another where I could feel the car pulling to one side.
