Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Checked out Thar Roxx Mx5 variant. Really loved the space inside. Seats are much comfortable than Thar RWD. My Dad gave a thumbs up for this car to replace his Sonet which has run 60k kms. My cousin has RWD thar which he never liked sitting in that. So do I, because of the uncomfortable seats and suspension.

Even single pane sunroof is also good in size and is located in a better place.

Definitely all C segment SUV manufacturers will take a hit because of Roxx.

I have already mentioned in my experience thread, it does have a weight sensor and started chirping with a loaded back pack kept vertical resting on the back rest. I had to lay it down to avoid the beeps on my drive back from Kerala.

That's a very interesting bit. Can you explain what do you mean by "located in a better place"?

The Pano-sunroof of AX7L starts a bid behind from driver's seat. Does this fix it and is placed differently?

While looking at camouflaged vehicles, I felt sunroof is bit behind than regular cars. But real this position is much better than having sunroof completely for the front seats.

This position gives better view for rear passengers as well.

Thanks.

Though what I was curious, is there any difference in starting position of sunroof between AX7L vs AX5? Not the size, but the placement…

@Bit- In the photos of the MX5 variant above, the smaller sunroof starts from approx B pillar onward. In most other cars, including C-SUVs etc., the sunroof mostly starts between A and B pillars. Please find the reference photo below.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Test drove. Officially the first person to test-drive at this showroom.

Only Diesel Manual AX7L was available for test-drive right now. While my interest was auto, manual was ok to have a feel never-the-less.

Seating and space:

Front: Reasonably comfortable, I was eventually able to find my driving position, which worked. (I'm 6.2+)

Rear: with my comfortable position, i was able to fit behind my own self, which means that for most other people, there is reasonable legroom. Getting in the rear seat was a bit of a hassle (or rather requires a practiced sequence) and maybe needs getting used to, specifically with the foot rest being mandatory to get into the rear, even for tall people.

Boot: Seems reasonable sized, specifically looking at its height, its still no Octavia, but very usable.

Drive
The RWD Diesel is only 150bhp, which felt quite capable but not a rocket.

Refinement: It was good with low NVH but I could still say my extinct Optra Magnum was a notch better. Thar however, felt better than the Toyotas! which people swear by.

Gearshifts: Clutch release point was deep and lever throw long, which meant little more work, but people who drive manuals regularly should add that to the feel of a SUV.

THE RIDE

I started in broken by-lanes, which gave a good mild offroad feel to start with.

The SUV feels invincible, but well cushioned and silent bumps and vibrations do get into the cabin. In contrast, I drove there is an Octavia, which was smoother and more composed, at the same time it did feel fragile on the same roads.

The jiggly ladder on frame feeling is very much there, so now I know when people say it'll not drive like a Creta!

On good roads, it rode like anything else, absolutely no complaints there.

Will passengers complain over bad roads, probably the ones who are used to monocoque will, but unlike monocoque, the car itself won't complain.

Will I buy it, well yes, but because I want to sit higher, and go anywhere and its not my only car.

Can someone consider this a C-SUV replacement, yes, but only if your heart is in the right place.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

A trip to the Cars24 Hub resulted to an impromptu visit to a Mahindra showroom as I spotted a white Thar Roxx being brought in.

The White Thar Roxx was the top of the line 4X4 variant, which only comes in diesel at the moment.

Surprisingly there was an MX5 Variant on display as well.

Few pictures to throw some visual details for the same. We all have been bombarded with photos of the top-end variant. From all angles, to say the least.

Luckily, I was able to tag along as a back-seat passenger on one of the first customer test drive for the Thar Roxx. The gentleman was a spirited driver whose daily is a VW Vento.

Observations from the back bench:

1. Gearbox is smooth, power delivery is not in your face but grasps speed briskly.
2. NVH is on point. I had to confirm with sales rep whether it is a petrol variant. Road noise and tire noise were very well contained.
3. Body-roll is present. Quite present given the type of vehicle. I daily a Linea, I felt a hint of nausea as the gentleman's driving was quite spirited. Pitch and yaw isn't significant.
4. One thing to point out, the visibility you get from the back-seat is surprisingly a lot. As good as being in the driver's seat. No one will claustrophobic.
5. Ingress, a big step required.
6. Fit and finish, on par.
7. Music system, I feel they could've done a tad bit better. Tata has better audio config with Harman.
8. The raised roof is not at all awkward in person. The other exterior details take your attention away from it.

Winner-winner chicken dinner for Mahindra.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Visited 2 dealers today and checked AX5L and AX7L. Colors available were red, black, white and deep forest.

Social media is gaga over positives, so I will just focus on shortcomings I felt.

1) Biggest letdown is front seats. The base is too short in length and it tapers down which makes it worse for under thigh support, will be an issue during long distance travel. The seat width is also on lower side with side bolstering jutting into body. I am average build with 5'10 and 78 Kg, will be more difficult for people of larger frames.

2) Rear seat is comfortable but can seat 2 full size adult and 1 kid for long distance journey, 3 adults are OK for shorter trips only.

3) Fit and finish is subpar in some areas, specially hard plastics in centre console and lower dashboard.

4) Big miss of a mechanism to tumble up rear seat like 3rd row in SN. The back seat does not fold flat and folding it is near useless with the height difference.

5) Just like 2D Thar, the inside packaging is poor, huge outside dimensions do not proportionately convert to space inside, I guess that is the reason they went with white interiors and that roof bulge to create a sense of space knowing the issue.

And yes, the quirky design elements everyone was talking about, they do not come into mind when looking at this otherwise beautiful vehicle.

I checked SN and XUV700 also to have a reference. Very clearly the fit and finish of Roxx is on lower side. Comfort and space is best in SN, it feels the most safe, comfortable and non intrusive space, a vehicle one can drive for days non stop with family not complaining. XUV700 is flagship in terms of features and comfort but lacks SN in terms of character and confidence while SN lacks in terms of features.

But when it comes to mechanics, Roxx is a clear leader. It inspires the confidence of a go anywhere vehicle, which with some compromises can be the only vehicle in the family. For people with low KM running like me, owning a offroad vehicle for an occasional trip and a family vehice for regular duties does not economically makes sense. With Roxx that situation has changed, it can perform both the duties and deserves a consideration.

Will take a more detailed test drive and update the drive comparison.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

So while scavenging information or even watching few on mute for my own Observations, came across this on Arun Pawar video
Mahindra Thar Roxx Review-screenshot_20240915_092629_youtube.png

That Gap should have been plugged else with window down the roof liner and passenger are in for a spray. Also looks wired for a vehicle having such fender flares unable to stop the spray on stock wheels

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Much has been said and written about the Roxx.

I went and saw it today for the first time. Today being Sunday and Onam there were no other customers.

Simply put, Everything about it is very well engineered and thought through from the perspective of its target segment; the family oriented buyer who is looking for great comfort, loads of features, luxury and of course, the all important ‘Jeep-ey’ Form Factor. Most people will be swayed by how it looks. And it most definitely looks good!

Here are my First impressions based on spending 1 hour with the vehicles at VST Palace Orchards just now.

1. I find the panoramic sunroof quite ok. As a driver seat occupant I still get the effect of the open sky - yes an extra 3-4 inches in front would have been nice.
2. The dead pedal is very comfortable unlike the retro fitted ones in the 3 door Thar.
3. The footwell space is perfectly fine for even a tall driver.
4. Under thigh support is not sufficient in the front seats.
5. The rear seats are very comfortable especially with their recline and the flat floor makes a lot of difference.
6. The luggage space is more than enough for a family of four who travel reasonably lightly.
7. The bottle holders in the doors are not sufficient.
8. The front doors open around 75 degrees and that is fine. The rear doors opening 90 degrees is a master touch!
9. The grab handles all around feel solid and even handle my 95kg weight easily.
10. The side steps feel much stronger than the ones on the 3 door and do not ‘give’ or even ‘creak’ when I stand on them.
11. The top roofline is a bit odd but its fine considering the rest of the package.
12. I have no opinion one way or a other on the rear 3 quarter. Except that at an angle it looks like a Jeep with the freedom top down.
13. The last panel on the roof (D Pillar) is plastic and not perfectly flush fitting with the roof itself.
14. In my book they could have easily offered a full Tumble Foldable Rear Seat right from the factory itself. This is a hugely useful feature in terms of freeing up cavernous luggage space and many owners may do a retro fit job. If done, even a large dog can lie down comfortably on the floor at the rear. Also good they included a rear wiper.
15. The Harman Kardon 9 Speaker Music System is fantastic. The sound is lovely.
16. Last but not least - the White interiors are an absolute disaster - whether the leather ones in the AX7L or the leatherette in the MX5. The display car is 2 days old in the showroom and already there are a lot of stains and finger marks and even the seats are discoloured.

One day I will test drive it and post my impressions of that experience too. I want to try that Intelli Turn and the Electronic Diff Locks and all that.

This vehicle will definitely make for the perfect long distance tourer for family and will give all of our inner Indiana Joneses, the kick, from the Form Factor. And that Creamy 2.2 Turbo Diesel will munch the miles super efficiently.

The most sensible buy for all normal folks will definitely be the 2WD Diesel AT. 4x4 is nice but not strictly nexessary for most folks.

This looks like the Definitive Grand Tourer which will unleash all our inner Indiana Jones-es for sure!

I really wish some good Auto Journalist will soon sit and do a blow by blow comparison of this Roxx vs the Wrangler Unlimited, both on road and off road.

I ask this because Mahindra's updated brochure says AX5L RWD and AX7L RWD Diesel Variants also get the higher state of tune. Refer Page 31
https://auto.mahindra.com/on/demandw...ure--03-09.pdf

Can anyone confirm anything regarding this?

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Quick question - has anyone added a sixth seat in the boot area? Is it possible in Roxx and how to make it legal? Think a sixth seat is good for an emergency short trip to accommodate a sixth passenger, say a kid in the boot. Sounds stupid and illegal?

Only in AT though, I test drove the MT.

Legally speaking, sounds illegal. No seatbelts no safety. You can always just put a stool and sit on it and keep bouncing around.

Well technically you can as anything is possible in India. Renault dealers were selling this when the Duster was launched. I’d avoid as it would be illegal, uncomfortable and with zero reliability on stability and anchorage in the case of a serious accident.

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/offic...ml#post2870355 (Renault Duster : Official Review)

Even the XL6 has a middle seat accessory that fits in between the captain’s chairs. I’d really admire the unbelted person in it as he/she would flying like a Tejas through the front windscreen in case of a head on!
